Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

La relazione gesto-parola in bambini con disturbo specifico del linguaggio in situazioni di compito e di interazione spontanea
No full textIntroduzione Alcuni studi hanno mostrato che i bambini con disturbo specifico del linguaggio (DSL) nelle interazioni verbali tendono a produrre più risposte minime e inadeguate dei bambini con sviluppo tipico (ST), ma quando i gesti accompagnano le loro verbalizzazioni possono esprimere informazioni non presenti nelle parole (Blake et al., 2008; Evans et al., 2001; Iverson & Braddock, 2011). Comunque, l’evidenza empirica che nei bambini con DSL il gesto possa sostenere o compensare l’espressione verbale è ancora controversa (Hill et al., 1998; Mainela-Arnold et al., 2006) e prevalentemente limitata a bambini d’età scolare in situazioni di compito. La nostra ricerca ha esaminato la relazione tra produzione gestuale spontanea e produzione verbale in bambini con DSL confrontati con bambini con ST durante un compito di denominazione lessicale (Studio 1) e l’interazione con la madre nel contesto di lettura congiunta di un libro di immagini (Studio 2). Metodo Quindici bambini d’età prescolare con DSL espressivo sono stati confrontati con 15+15 bambini con ST appaiati, rispettivamente, per età cronologica e abilità linguistiche. Sia le sessioni del compito, proposto attraverso il test ‘PinG-Parole in Gioco’ (Bello et al., 2010), che quelle di lettura congiunta sono state videoregistrate e trascritte. Le risposte al test e gli enunciati prodotti dai bambini nel contesto interattivo sono stati codificati in base alla modalità di espressione (Verbale, Gestuale, Bimodale), ai tipi di gesti (Deittici, Rappresentativi, Altri) e alle funzioni del gesto in relazione alla parola (Rinforza, Disambigua, Aggiunge informazione) negli enunciati bimodali. Risultati Nel compito di denominazione --che richiedeva solo la produzione di singole parole-- i bambini con DSL hanno prodotto gesti deittici e rappresentativi in accompagnamento alle risposte verbali significativamente più dei loro pari con ST, F(2,42)=10.29, p<.001, ηp2=.36, (I-J)=29.44, p=.001. I risultati dello Studio 2 confermano che, rispetto ai loro pari con ST, i bambini con DSL non solo hanno usato più enunciati bimodali nell’interazione con la madre, F(2,42)=3.48, p=.04, ηp2=.14, (I-J)=11.95, p=.012, ma hanno anche prodotto più gesti che Aggiungono informazioni non espresse nelle parole co-occorrenti, F(2,42)=3.41, p=.043, ηp2=.14, (I-J)=12.14, p=.015. Conclusioni Complessivamente, questi risultati supportano l’ipotesi di un “vantaggio gestuale” nei bambini con DSL, e hanno implicazioni per la pratica educativa e clinica
