Exploring young students creativity: The effect of model eliciting activities

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to show how engaging students in real-life mathematical situations can stimulate their mathematical creative thinking. We analyzed the mathematical modeling of two girls, aged 10 and 13 years, as they worked on an authentic task involving the selection of a track team. The girls displayed several modeling cycles that revealed their thinking processes, as well as cognitive and affective features that may serve as the foundation for a methodology that uses model-eliciting activities to promote the mathematical creative process

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Gilat Peru is a telecommunication company owned by Gilat Satellite Networks (GSN), a leading company in the development and implementation of satellite technology based in Israel, whose main activity is the manufacture of satellite communication equipment, focusing on the telecommunications , government and corporate operators market worldwide. It was established in Peru since 1999, marketing products manufactured by GSN and as a telecommunications operator, with a focus on sectors of the country, where the main mobile operators are not covered or offer poor services. Likewise, Gilat Peru provides telecommunications infrastructure construction services, through the award of tenders promoted by the National Telecommunications Program (PRONATEL, former Telecommunications Investment Fund - FITEL), with the objective of closing communication gaps and existing connectivity in the country. This business consultancy analyzed the main causes of the problems that prevent Gilat Peru from meeting the annual objectives set by the parent company, identifying the main problem, and proposing alternatives that help mitigate its economic impact. Among the main directives projected to 2022, it is expected to reach a level of positive financial performance, increase the presence at the national level, and increase annual revenues. The internal and external analysis of the company determined that the main problem is based on non-compliance with the objectives of annual financial results that ensure coverage of fixed operating expenses and costs, and which in turn generate profits. Therefore, after a thorough review of the related literature, the implementation of a series of alternatives is proposed, in order to increase profitability and financial income in a sustained manner, through the management and innovation of products and services, leading to The company has a positive economic effect and a repositioning of its value offer. Finally, an evaluation of the economic viability of each alternative was carried out, considering the associated risks and the expected benefits, which will be decisive for the decision making of the General Management of Gilat Peru, regarding the implementation of each of them.Tesi

Gilat L Grunau1, Pamela A Ratner1,2, Shahadut Hossain11NEXUS; 2School of Nursing, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada; University of British Columbia, Vancouver, CanadaBackground: Women reportedly do not perceive heart disease (HD) as a major threat to their health; however, men’s perceptions are rarely studied.Purpose: We explored gender and ethnic differences in risk perception of HD mortality. Methods: The survey was completed by 976 people 40+ years of age, in metropolitan Vancouver, Canada. Results: Men, compared with women, were more likely not to know the answer to a question about whether HD is the most common cause of death for women; however, women were more likely not to know the answer to a question about whether HD is the most common cause of death for men. Chinese-Canadian and South Asian-Canadian participants were more likely than participants of other ethnic groups not to know the answer to either question, and the Chinese-Canadian participants were more likely to disagree that HD is the most common cause of death for women. Conclusion: There is a need to educate the Chinese-Canadian and South Asian-Canadian communities about HD as a first step in promoting health behavior change. Men and women must be educated about the other gender’s risk of HD because all adults play integral roles in making decisions about the prevention of and early intervention for HD.Keywords: risk assessment, heart disease, mortality, gender, ethnic group

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

A novel scheme for inserting manufactured viscous dampers in building structures

    No full text
This paper summarizes the results of a number of research works carried by the authors over the years in order to identify the “optimal” way of inserting manufactured viscous dampers in shear-type structures. The novel scheme proposed here as “optimal” (and referred to as “the MPD system”) is based upon the mass proportional component of the Rayleigh damping matrix (MPD matrix) and is characterised by a peculiar damper placement which sees the dampers placed so that they connect each floor to a fixed point. Firstly, the paper briefly recalls (a) the physical principles and (b) selected results of numerical investigations which show that the MPD system is characterised by superior dissipative properties. Secondly, the paper investigates the implementation of the MPD system in civil building structures
