The scarce space that Giorgio Vasari dedicates in his Vite to the woodcut technique meant a long exclusion of wood engraving from Italian artistic historiography, a silence that survived its author for at least two centuries. Only from the second half of the 18th century did a debate on the origins of woodcut begin to develop in Italy. However, the void of historiography was partly filled between the 16th and 17th centuries by significant episodes of interest in 15th-century woodcut, linked not so much to their artistic aspect, but rather to their devotional one. The analysis of a series of cases highlights a certain need at the time to deal with the origins of woodcut. Despite the silence of the official treatises, responses offered often surprising results

Optimized Schwarz methods for the coupling of cylindrical geometries along the axial direction

In this work, we focus on the Optimized Schwarz Method for circular flat interfaces and geometric heterogeneous coupling arising when cylindrical geometries are coupled along the axial direction. In the first case, we provide a convergence analysis for the diffusion-reaction problem and jumping coefficients and we apply the general optimization procedure developed in Gigante and Vergara (Numer. Math. 131 (2015) 369–404). In the numerical simulations, we discuss how to choose the range of frequencies in the optimization and the influence of the Finite Element and projection errors on the convergence. In the second case, we consider the coupling between a three-dimensional and a one-dimensional diffusion-reaction problem and we develop a new optimization procedure. The numerical results highlight the suitability of the theoretical findings

    Svevo

Classificazione e potere in Michel Foucault

    No full text
The reflection of Michel Foucault encompasses many fields of knowledge and his method of investigation goes well beyond philosophical speculation. After devoting his first works to the subject of the historical character of science, madness and psychiatry, he extended his research to the analysis of the relationship between the production of scientific discourses, the institutions of the modern age and society. However, what is still missing in the critical literature on Foucault is an in-depth analysis of the social role of classification in ordinary life. This is not explicitly addressed by the French author, but it is a central element of his thought. The following article originated from the necessity to study this feature of Foucault’s works as well as to pave the way to future studies on the topic

Optimized Schwarz Methods for Spherical Interfaces With Application to Fluid-Structure Interaction

    No full text
In this work we consider the optimized Schwarz method designed for computational domains that feature spherical or almost spherical interfaces. In the first part, we consider the diffusion-reaction problem. We provide a convergence analysis of the generalized Schwarz method and, following [G. Gigante and C. Vergara, Numer. Math., 131 (2015), pp. 369–404], we discuss an optimization procedure for constant interface parameters leading to a Robin–Robin scheme. Finally, we present some numerical results both in spherical and in ellipsoidal domains. In the second part of the work, we address the fluid-structure interaction problem. Again, we provide a convergence analysis and discuss optimized choices of constant interface parameters. Finally, we present three-dimensional numerical results inspired by hemodynamic applications, to validate the proposed choices in the presence of large added mass effect. In particular, we consider numerical experiments both in an ideal spherical domain and in a realistic abdominal aortic aneurysm
