Abelianization and sequential confinement in 2 + 1 dimensions

We consider the lagrangian description of Argyres-Douglas theories of type A2N1A_2N-1, which is a SU(N)SU(N) gauge theory with an adjoint and one fundamental flavor. An appropriate reformulation allows us to map the moduli space of vacua across the duality, and to dimensionally reduce. Going down to three dimensions, we find that the adjoint SQCD "abelianizes": in the infrared it is equivalent to a \mathcalN=4 linear quiver theory. Moreover, we study the mirror dual: using a monopole duality to "sequentially confine" quivers tails with balanced nodes, we show that the mirror RG flow lands on \mathcalN=4 SQED with NN flavors. These results provide a physical derivation of previous proposals for the three dimensional mirror of AD theories

    Lagrangians for generalized Argyres-Douglas theories

We continue the study of Lagrangian descriptions of \mathcalN=2 Argyres-Douglas theories. We use our recent interpretation in terms of sequential confinement to guess the Lagrangians of all the Argyres-Douglas models with Abelian three dimensional mirror. We find classes of four dimensional \mathcalN=1 quivers that flow in the infrared to generalized Argyres-Douglas theories, such as the (Ak,AkN+N1)(A_k,A_kN+N-1) models. We study in detail how the \mathcalN=1 chiral rings map to the Coulomb and Higgs Branches of the \mathcalN=2 CFT's. The three dimensional mirror RG flows are shown to land on the \mathcalN=4 complete graph quivers. We also compactify to three dimensions the gauge theory dual to (A1,D4)(A_1,D_4), and find the expected Abelianization duality with \mathcalN=4 SQED with 33 flavors

Supersymmetric gauge theories with decoupled operators and chiral ring stability

We propose a general way to complete supersymmetric theories with operators below the unitarity bound, adding gauge-singlet fields that enforce the decoupling of such operators. This makes it possible to perform all usual computations, and to compactify on a circle. We concentrate on a duality between an N=1 SU(2) gauge theory and the N=2 A_3 Argyres-Douglas theory, mapping the moduli space and chiral ring of the completed N=1 theory to those of the A_3 model. We reduce the completed gauge theory to 3D, finding a 3D duality with N=4 supersymmetric QED (SQED) with two flavors. The naive dimensional reduction is instead N=2 SQED. Crucial is a concept of chiral ring stability, which modifies the superpotential and allows for a 3D emergent global symmetry

New N = 2 superconformal field theories from S -folds

We study the four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal field theories that describe D3-branes probing the recently constructed N = 2 S-folds in F-theory. We introduce a novel, infinite class of superconformal field theories related to S-fold theories via partial Higgsing. We determine several properties of both the S-fold models and this new class of theories, including their central charges, Coulomb branch spectrum, and moduli spaces of vacua, by bringing to bear an array of field-theoretical techniques, to wit, torus-compactifications of six-dimensional N = (1, 0) theories, class S technology, and the SCFT/VOA correspondence

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Mario Giacomelli pittore

    T-branes, monopoles and S-duality

M2 branes probing T-brane backgrounds in M-theory with ADE surface singu- larities perceive deformations on their worldvolume superpotentials by monopole operators. The dynamics and moduli spaces of the resulting theories can be studied using a dual de- scription involving conventional superpotential terms and (the dimensional reduction of) class S trinion theories. By using the S-dual description of N=2 SU(N) SQCD with 2N flavors in four dimensions, we are able to study T-branes corresponding to all minimal nilpotent orbits for the whole ADE series

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
