The research presents customer service at the Hilton Hotel and Resorts, the importance of customer service in the Hospitality industry, customer satisfaction analysis model, definition about SERVQUAL, which stands for five dimensions of service quality, the value of perceiving Asian culture to improve customer service for Asian guests. The qualitative research method for this thesis is completed by interviewing two different groups of people. The thesis puts an effort to clarify several facts about Asian culture, which is related to the Hospitality industry, such as habit lifestyle, etiquette, special traditional culture, hobby, and so on. The author is gathering authentic information from expert people who are currently working in the Hilton Hotel and Resorts, and in other hotels, opinions of some Asian guests are also collected to analyze. This research concentrates on the improvement of customer service within Asian culture at the Hilton Hotel. In detail, the research is to understand Asian culture and serve Asian customers better by the Hilton Hotel system over the world. The author used qualitative method to analyze the improvement of Asian culture at the Hilton Hotel. The instrument tool in the research was the interview. The result of findings showed that Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa could improve their customer service by helping customers, supporting them, and answering all questions within their ability. In addition, the hotel was better to study Asian culture; for example, providing popular food in Asia such as instant noodles would make customer satisfied. The language was a problem to make customer service better. The result of the interview revealed that employees of the hotel should take a trip to another Hilton in Asia to study, experience, and more understand local people. The second result of the interview presented that in order to improve customer service, employees must put themselves in the shoes of customers so that they could understand what customers want and need. Training course about customer service is extremely necessary to enhance the professional skills of employees

Clara Ertyas P. 2011. An Appraisal Analysis of Gossip News Texts Written By Perez Hilton From Perezhilton.com (A Study Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics).English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts, Sebelas Maret University. This research explored the appraisal system in the gossip news text written by Perez Hilton, taken from his website, perezhilton.com. There were eight texts that were analyzed. They were two texts of Katy Perry, two text of Leona Lewis, two text of Miley Cyrus, and two texts of Chris Brown, which were analyzed using Appraisal Theory. Appraisal theory is concerned with attitude, graduation, and engagement. The objectives of this thesis were to find out what appraising items applied in those texts; how they were applied; and why they were applied, including the ideology. This was a descriptive qualitative research. The technique of taking sample used in this research was total sampling. There were two data in this research, the primary data which was sourced from the eight analyzed texts, and the secondary data which was contained the information of Perez Hilton related to his writings. The results show that the three kinds of attitudes (affect, jugdment, and appreciation) are applied in the texts, but mostly is judgment. The types of the items are in the forms of word, nominal group and clause. Mostly the attitudes are in the forms of epithet group, attitudinal lexis and mental process clauses. Meanwhile, the engagement is mostly monogloss. The moslty graduation is force, and the scaling of the graduation is up- scaled. The attitudes are applied through the strong expression, and they are applied in Analytical Exposition genre. Additionally, the texts are written subjectively based on the writer’s aspiration. The appraising items are applied in the texts because of the ideologies that the writer wants to convey. The ideologies are right antagonist for texts exposing Katy Perry and Leona Lewis; and left antagonist for texts exposing Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown. The ideology shows the writer’s style in writing gossip news text that he supports the artist if he likes and conversely he challenges the artists who he does not like

A string number line lesson sequence to promote students’ relative thinking and understanding of scale, key elements of proportional reasoning

    No full text
Proportional reasoning involves relative thinking: the ability to think about multiple quantities simultaneously, and in relative terms as opposed to absolute terms (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2012). Concepts related to relative and absolute thinking and the ability to think relatively and multiplicatively are essential to understanding proportionality (Hilton, Hilton, Dole, & Goos, 2015). It takes time for students to develop proportional reasoning and without targeted teaching, many students fail to develop the important skills and conceptual understanding that underpins it (Bangert- Drowns, Hurley, & Wilkinson, 2004; Kastberg, D'Ambrosio, & Lynch-Davis, 2012; Lamon, 2012). Proportional reasoning is essential for students to succeed in many mathematical areas, including ratio and proportion, measurement and unit conversions, geometry, and probability. It is also necessary in other subjects, such as geography and science (Akatugba & Wallace, 2009). In fact, scale and proportion have been identified as crosscutting concepts fundamental to understanding and reasoning in science (National Research Council, 2012)

'This work was part of the Azores Bullfinch monitoring programme included in the project LIFE NAT/P/000013 “Recovery of Azores Bullfinch’s habitat in the Special Protection Area of Pico da Vara / Ribeira do Guilherme”'The Azores Bullfinch is endemic to the island of São Miguel (Azores, Portugal). Its status was uplisted to Critically Endangered in 2005 on the basis of an extremely small and declining population that was considered to be restricted to a very small mountain range (43 km2), in a single location, within which the spread of invasive plants constituted a threat to habitat quality. Nevertheless, information was mostly inferred, or the product of, non-systematic studies. In order to carry out a complete assessment of the conservation status we analysed: (i) population trend, calculated from annual monitoring 1991–2008, (ii) population size, and (iii) range size, obtaining estimates in a single morning study in 2008 involving the simultaneous participation of 48 observers. Contrary to previous inferences, the population is no longer decreasing, although quality of laurel forest habitat continues to decline due to the persistent threat of invasive species. Population size (mean ± SE) was estimated at 1,064 ± 304 individuals using distance sampling methods, although the estimate was very sensitive to the survey method used. Range size estimates (extent of occurrence and area of occupancy) were 144 km2 and 83 km2 respectively. Given the present information, we propose the downlisting of Azores Bullfinch to Endangered on the IUCN Red List.Peer reviewe

'The Cloud of Unknowing': its inheritance and its inheritors

    No full text
The thesis attempts a portrait of The Cloud in the context of its position in the history of Christian mysticism. That the anonymous work owed much to spiritual writers of the preceding twelve hundred years is not debatable; what it owed maybe slightly less obvious. The Cloud is essentially a work of Dionysian mysticism, and various writers within that tradition who may have influenced or affected the teaching of The Cloud are examined. At the same time, however, the anonymous writer owes much to the western tradition of Augustinian theology, and the role of this, complementary to the Dionysian mysticism, is also considered. In Chapter II we look at the theological doctrine underlying the mystical doctrine of the Cloud corpus. Chapter III has two major parts, both concerned with the influence of The Cloud on the subsequent development of spiritual writing in England. The first considers the relationship with Walter Hilton. The second examines aspects of Puritan thought which may indicate that the influence of The Cloud, after the Reformation, was not restricted to Catholic thought

An international proposal to ensure the fair treatment of seafarers

    No full text
The fair treatment of seafarers in the event of a maritime accident remains an urgent priority for the international maritime industry, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Following a series of notorious criminal cases in different jurisdictions over two decades, the unfair treatment of seafarers came to the fore, the cases drawing sharp criticism from commentators and especially the international maritime industry. There were great expectations that the resulting guidelines on fair treatment of seafarers in the event of a maritime accident (the Guidelines) would ensure the fair treatment of seafarers. But as this article demonstrates, the expectations have not been fulfilled, and the rights in the Guidelines are often theoretical and illusory, rather than practical and enforceable. This article breaks new ground in four major respects. First, in 2012, a survey of 3480 seafarers, constructed by the author, found that 81 per cent of seafarers who had faced criminal charges considered that they were treated unfairly. Secondly, the article reports the responses of member states of the IMO to another survey designed by the author which shows that state practice on the implementation of the Guidelines is widely divergent. Thirdly, guidance for member states on the implementation of the Guidelines is proposed for the first time, heretically eschewing an orthodox model law and advocating instead discretionary implementation by reference to the Guidelines. Possible counter-contentions to the guidance are raised and rejected in detail. Fourthly, as a judgment handed down by the author indicates, the Guidelines can be applied by courts without implementing legislation; but this approach is not advocated. Instead, the guidance aims to facilitate the most convenient and expeditious implementation of the Guidelines, ensuring their widespread promulgation and implementation and reversing the incidence of unfair treatment of 1.5 million seafarers around the world
