Matilde Serao in Sweden. A Voice of "The New Italy"

No full text
This chapter examines the contemporary reception of Matilde Serao's works in Swedish newspapers from 1885 to the first years of the twentieth century. This analysis provides a historical background for understanding why Serao's masterpiece Il paese di cuccagna (1891) was translated in Swedish as early as 1892. In fact, Serao was already known to the Swedish public through the activity of C.D. af Wirsén, an important conservative critic who reviewed her original work and contributed to establishing Serao's reputation as a major contemporary author. Furthermore, examination of recently digitalized Swedish newspapers shows that Serao's short stories were published on at least twenty occasions from 1888 to 1897. These anonymous translations can be attributed with a high degree of probability to the pen of Ellen Lundberg-Nyblom, the translator of Il paese di cuccagna. Swedish reviewers greeted Serao as a master of vivid description and an insightful painter of human passions. At the same time, the fact that Serao, being a woman, was professionally active as a journalist and a newspaper editor attracted attention of Swedish media, transforming the Neapolitan author into a public figure known to a broader audience.

The Nardus-rich communities in the northern Apennines (N-Italy): a phytosociological, ecological and phytogeographical study

Secondary grasslands dominated by Nardus stricta are an anthropogenic vegetation type that occurs widely through the Europe from lowlands to mountains. These communities have been recently recognized by the European Community as a habitat of priority interest. The aim of the study is to perform a detailed and complete phytosociological scrutiny of this vegetation in the northern Apennines. Further aims are to detect the factors controlling the floristic variation within these communities and to analyse the variations of Nardus grasslands along a latitudinal gradient from the northern Alps to the southern Apennines. We processed a set of 134 phytosociological relevés from the northern Apennines through a cluster analysis based on Kendall’s tau dissimilarity measure. Results showed the occurrence of two different associations of Nardus grasslands (Carlino caulescentis-Nardetum strictae and Violo ferrarinii-Nardetum strictae). Relations between their floristic composition and environmental variables were detected through Redundancy Analysis. The matrix of habitat factors included topographic variables and variables derived from Ellenberg’s indicator values. Elevation was the factor explaining most of the floristic variation. From the comparison of 44 synoptic tables from the Alps, Carpathians and Apennines, processed through a NMDS ordination, we detected two main phytogeographic and ecological thresholds along the latitudinal gradient

Studying local species assemblages of salt-affected vegetation for monitoring Natura 2000 habitats

This study aims to characterize saline habitats of the Tuscan coast based on the Natura 2000 Habitats Directive 92/43/ECC. These habitats include Atlantic salt meadows (1330), Mediterranean salt meadows (1410) Mediterranean and thermo-Atlantic halophilous scrubs (1420), and Mediterranean salt steppes (1510). We compiled vegetation data from a total of 418 plots carried out during our own fieldwork (N = 157) and published scientific literature (N = 261). We performed a Linear Discriminant Analysis to associate species to habitats and used the phi coefficient of association to identify diagnostic species of each habitat. For each habitat, we provide a regional syntaxonomic framework, constant species, cover coefficients, diagnostic species (phi) and “typical species”. We identified groups of species, that we called “local assembly of typical species”, composed by species with a phi coefficient > 20 and/or a cover coefficient > 50 that can be used to identify the habitats and to monitor their conservation status at the local level. This study revealed differences in the “local assembly of typical species” among habitats, characterized by fewer species in habitats 1420 and 1510, and many species in habitats 1410 and 1310. Our results showed that the habitat 1510 was recognizable only for the high cover value of Limonium narbonense and, at least in Tuscany, its syntaxonomic attribution to the order Limonietalia is uncertain. We tested this approach only for a few habitats, but a broader applicability based on other habitats is desirable

The work written by the Colombian poet Matilde Espinosa de Pérez de serves to be known and recognized by the literary review, so according to this, the article below is a study about two of her last works: The dark land and The town gets into dark. This paper analyses the poetic conception of the female author, the a esthetic connection of her work with her passing within everyday life as a mother, woman and female writer and, the standing she considers among pain, life and death as elements that constitutes her poetic ar

The primary grasslands of the northern Apennine summits (N-Italy): a phytosociological and ecological survey

This paper provides a comprehensive phytosociological survey on the alpine grasslands occurring on the northern Apennine summits (N-Italy). The study area represents a crucial phytogeographic joint between the Alps and the Apennines and its summit grassland vegetation was only partially document-ed at the time. Research was based on 219 relevés classified combining a preliminary manual procedure with a cluster analysis that was performed with the Ward’s minimum variance method on the chord distance matrix. In such a way, six different plant associations were identified and allocated to three different phytosociological classes (Juncetea trifidi, Elyno-Seslerietea, Carici rupestris-Kobresieteabellardii). All the six associations could be regarded as endemic because occurring only in the study area. Four of them were described here for the first time and typified according to the rules of the Inter-national Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. The relevés corresponding to calcium-poor grass-lands (Juncetea trifidi) were assigned to three different associations allocated to the suballiance Festucenion riccerii, here newly described. The relevés corresponding to calcium-rich grasslands (Elyno-Seslerietea) were assigned to two associations, respectively, belonging to the alliance Caricion ferrugineae and to a new alliance described here under the name Caricion sempervirentis-Seslerionapenninae. Finally, a graminoid tundra association was firstly documented for the northern Apennines and assigned to the alliance Oxytropido-Elynion myosuroidis. The extent and quality of species fidelity to the different plant associations was detected by developing a metric named “Retention Index” (RIN). Calculation of RIN values showed that calcium-rich grasslands retained a higher floristic distinctive-ness with respect to the calcium-poor ones. The analysis of environmental gradients within the grass-land vegetation was performed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), adopting Ellenberg indicator values as indirect environmental factors. The first ordination axis of PCA was primarily posi-tively correlated with soil reaction and, secondarily, with temperature. The primary grasslands in the alpine life zone of the northern Apennines showed a fine floristic variation along the gradient from calcium-poor to calcium-rich substrates
