Affective (mis)encounters in "The Doll´s House" (A discussion of Katherine Mansfield´s short story)

Katherine Mansfield’s “The doll’s house” (2000) constitutes the object of the present discussion, which aims at tracing the relations among the characters, focusing on their affective actions–both those linked to negative affects (coldness,arrogance, violence, cruelty) and those related to positive affects (gentleness, sharing, understanding, tolerance, sensibility). My hypothesis is that the most substantial meanings of the shortstory derive from (mis)affective encounters–on the one hand, exclusion, prejudice, humiliation and cruelty; on the other, complicity, respect, acceptance and inclusion. My analysis will be supported with literary theoretical principles and with social theory discussions on the “affective turn”, so as to argue that this narrative dramatizes new possibilities of perception and action
Jane Austen e a recodificação paródica do gótico em Northanger Abbey
No full texthttp://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2012n62p75 O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir as construções e efeitos do diálogo paródico que o romance Northanger Abbey (1818), de Jane Austen, estabelece com a tradição de literatura Gótica no contexto inglês do século XVIII. Por ser considerada uma forma expressiva de intertextualidade, a paródia (tanto no sentido de canto paralelo como de contracanto) aciona ativamente e criativamente a tradição que parodia. Consequentemente, estudar tal articulação significa estar atenta ao movimento comparativo entre códigos, textualidades, leituras e tradições literárias, de modo a reconhecer os efeitos da paródia também imbricados em um contexto mais amplo de metaficção. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the constructions and effects of the parodic dialogue Jane Austen’s novel Northanger Abbey (1818) establishes with a tradition of Gothic literature in the eighteenth-century English context. Because it is considered as an expressive form of intertextuality, parody (both in the sense of ‘parallel song’ and ‘counter-song’) actively and creatively recodifies the tradition it parodies. As a consequence, studying such an articulation means being aware of a comparative interplay among codes, textualities, readings and literary traditions, so as to recognize the effects of parody as also articulated with a larger context of metafiction.
THE CONFIGURATION AND EFFECTS OF SPACE IN SHIRLEY JACKSON’S “LIKE MOTHER USED TO MAKE”
No full textThe present piece of research aims to analyse the construction and relevance of space in the short story “Like mother used to make” (1949) written by Shirley Jackson. The study of space was for a long time regarded as being somehow irrelevant to literary analysis. This research raises awareness to this fact as well as draws a timeline of the changes in the spatial perception as an academic element of research. Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space (1958) has an important role in that Spatial Turn. Besides, it provides an important theoretical support to the hypothesis that the setting of twin apartments, in the short story, is an intimate representation of the characters. Furthermore, the setting also acts as an element that enables changes in Marcia’s character directly affecting David’s character. Finally, this research attempts to throw some light on Shirley Jackson whose literature was neglected for several decades.O presente trabalho de pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar a construção e relevância do espaço no conto “Like mother used to make” (1949) escrito por Shirley Jackson. O estudo do espaço foi por muito tempo negligenciado, sendo considerado elemento irrelevante para a análise literária. Este trabalho buscou abordar este fato e traçar um perfil das mudanças sofridas na percepção do espaço como um elemento de pesquisa acadêmica. O livro The Poetics of Space (1958), de Gaston Bachelard, teve papel importante nesse Virada Espacial. Além disso, Bachelard proporciona suporte teórico para a hipótese de que os apartamentos do conto são representações do íntimo dos personagens. Ademais, o espaço do conto age como facilitador das mudanças sofridas pela personagem de Marcia que afetam diretamente a personagem de David. Finalmente, a presente pesquisa procura trazer o nome de Shirley Jackson para discussão, já que sua literatura foi marginalizada e esquecida por tantas décadas

References to Austen’s Persuasionappear three times in Fowles’s novel, and the resonances of this intertextualdialogue substantially affect the politics of characterization and space(mainly the Cobb) in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. This discussionis theoretically based on the relationship between intertextuality,intermediality and parody, so as to consider the relevance of Persuasion(a pre-Victorian novel) in a work which has been generally considered bycritics as a parody of values and tenets of Victorian society and literature.What relationships are produced, in terms of both poetics and politics,when we think about the Austen-Fowles association?Este ensaio tem como objetivo investigar a importância de Jane Austen em A mulher do tenente francês, de John Fowles. Referências à Persuasão, de Austen, aparecem três vezes no romance de Fowles, e as ressonâncias desse diálogo intertextual afetam substancialmente a política de caracterização e espaço (principalmente o Cobb) em A mulher do tenente francês. Esta discussão fundamenta-se teoricamente na relação entre intertextualidade, intermedialidade e paródia, de modo a considerar a relevância de Persuasão (romance pré-vitoriano) em uma obra geralmente considerada pelos críticos como uma paródia de valores e princípios da sociedade e da literatura vitorianas. Stories within stories: The writing and reading of diaries and women's legacy
No full textThe aim of this article is to discuss Virginia Woolf’s “The legacy” making an articulation between the relevance of the diaries and a critique against the violence of patriarchal society, of which women and men can be victims. The presence of the diaries endows the narrative with a metafictional structure, of a story within a story, so as to create suspense and produce irony. Because of the diaries, the characters change positions and occupy different places throughout the narrative. At last, we argue that the diaries constitute a powerful metonymy for women’s writing and for the emotional elaboration of their life experiences.Propomos a discussão do conto “The legacy”, de Virginia Woolf, procurando fazer uma articulação entre a relevância dos diários e a crítica e denúncia feitas em relação à violência da sociedade patriarcal, de que são vítimas mulheres e homens. A presença dos diários dota a narrativa de uma estrutura metaficcional, de uma história dentro de outra história, de modo a criar suspense e ironia. Por causa dos diários, os personagens mudam de posições e ocupam lugares diferentes ao longo da narrativa. Por fim, defendemos que os diários constituem uma metonímia potente para a escrita de mulheres e para a elaboração emocional de suas experiências de vida
Art about/within art: a metafictional reading of oscar wilde’s “the nightingale and the rose”
No full textThis monograph paper aims at articulating the theory of metafiction with an analysis of Oscar Wilde’s “The Nightingale and the Rose”. In our critical reading of Wilde’s fairy tale, we analyzed the instances in which the artistic composition was made especially visible within the work of art, through the materialization of different metafictional creative devices. We could notice a parodic intent that ordered the short story’s narrative construction, thus allowing for the recoding of the classical tradition of fairy-tale writings; the dialogues, held with poetry and music, and the philosophy of art that Wilde engendered in his story also contributed to the narrative’s parodic and metafictional status. Having considered the metafictional creative strategies, we concluded that Wilde was able to artistically innovate by re-elaborating a literary genre that had become overly didactic in Victorian England, at the same time in which he reconnected his narrative with the utopian kernel of oral folktales and led us to reflect on questions that are not usually found in the literary fairy tales by his time, such as the function of art and the role played by the artist.Este trabalho monográfico tem por objetivo articular a teoria da metaficção a uma análise do conto “The Nightingale and the Rose”, de Oscar Wilde. Em nossa leitura crítica do conto, analisamos como e em quais instâncias a condição artística da narrativa enquanto produto ou artifício se materializou a partir do uso de diferentes recursos de criação metaficcionais. Percebemos, assim, uma intencionalidade paródica que ordenou a construção narrativa do conto wildeano, permitindo uma recodificação da tradição clássica de contos de fadas. Também o diálogo estabelecido com a música e a poesia, além do desenvolvimento de uma filosofia da arte na narrativa contribuíram para seu caráter paródico e metaficcional. Considerando tais recursos de criação metaficcional, pudemos concluir que Wilde não somente conseguiu inovar artisticamente com a reelaboração de um gênero literário que havia se tornado excessivamente didático na Inglaterra Vitoriana, mas o fez retomando o caráter utópico presente nos contos populares orais e nos levando a refletir sobre questões não comumente encontradas até então na escrita de contos de fadas literários, a exemplo da função da arte e do papel desempenhado pelo artista
Imbricações entre ficção, teoria e crítica em sweet tooth, de Ian McEwan
No full textIn this article, we analyze the activation of discourses from the disciplines of literary theory and criticism in Sweet Tooth, a novel written by English author Ian McEwan. Four strategies will be examined: i. theorization of metafiction; ii. theorizations regarding literature in general; iii. exposition of the techniques used in the construction of the narrative; iv. critical commentaries about other writers and other literary texts. The intertwinement of discourses works as a form of literary literacy, developed by the novel itself, in order to form more reflexive readers in relation to literature and to literary theory and criticism.Neste artigo, analisamos a ativação de discursos provenientes das disciplinas de teoria e crítica literárias em Sweet Tooth, romance do escritor inglês Ian McEwan. São quatro as formas examinadas: i. teorização sobre a metaficção; ii. teorizações diversas sobre a literatura em geral; iii. explicitação das técnicas utilizadas na construção da narrativa; iv. comentários críticos sobre outros escritores e outros textos literários. A imbricação de discursos funciona como uma forma de letramento literário, desenvolvido pelo próprio romance, em busca de formar leitores com uma maior capacidade reflexiva diante da literatura e da teoria e da crítica literárias.En este artículo, analizamos la activación de discursos originados de las asignaturas de teoría y crítica literaria en la novela Sweet Tooth, del escritor inglés Ian McEwan. The reason and the order: Bishop José Joaquim da Cunha de Azeredo Coutinho and the illustrated defense of the ancient Portuguese regime (1742-1821)
No full textÚltimo inquisidor-mor, bispo de Olinda e deputado eleito pelo Rio de Janeiro nas Cortes de Lisboa. A vida e a trajetória de José Joaquim da Cunha Azeredo Coutinho (1742-1821) são conhecidas da historiografia brasileira. Intransigente defensor da ordem estabelecida, Azeredo Coutinho distinguiu-se, inicialmente, com a publicação de memórias econômicas, abordando temas variados que vão desde o preço do açúcar até a defesa da justiça do comércio de escravos africanos; por sua participação no governo da Capitania de Pernambuco e a frente da diocese da cidade alentejana de Elvas. Esta pesquisa pretende analisar o pensamento econômico e as concepções políticas de Azeredo Coutinho. Num primeiro momento, faremos uma leitura crítica de seus escritos à luz de sua atuação pública, reconstituindo seus referenciais teóricos e contextualizando-os a partir das questões que ele procurava responder. Neste percurso, teremos sempre em vista sua colaboração com os ministros ilustrados na produção de uma idéia de Império, de inspiração luso-brasileira, em direção a uma solução mais ampla, de caráter imperial. Destacaremos também o caráter reformista de suas idéias e ações. Como inúmeros de seus contemporâneos, Azeredo combateu a secularização buscando manter o passado atual, mas sem propor um retorno a ele. Reformista, acreditava que a destruição das estruturas históricas elaboradas por formas sociais mais antigas levaria a destruição da sociedade no seu caráter moderno. Foi nesse contexto intelectual que Azeredo Coutinho produziu sua defesa das prerrogativas do Trono, da legitimidade da autoridade da Igreja e da atualidade do Sistema Colonial.This is a study about the life and times of D. José Joaquim da Cunha de Azeredo Coutinho (1742-1821). A catholic bishop and a statesman, Azeredo Coutinho is one of the best examples of an enlightened author defender of the Ancient Regime in the Portuguese Empire. In this work, aspects of his essays on economics and political issues, his actions as the head of the Capitania de Pernambuco government (1798- 1802), and as bishop of the Alentejo city of Elvas will be contextualized with the program of reforms sponsored by the Portuguese Crown in the late 18th Century. Exploiting Bacteriophage Proteomes: The Hidden Biotechnological Potential
No full textBacteriophages encode many distinct proteins for the successful infection of a bacterial host. Each protein plays a specific role in the phage replication cycle, from host recognition, through takeover of the host machinery, and up to cell lysis for progeny release. As the roles of these proteins are being revealed, more biotechnological applications can be anticipated. Phage-encoded proteins are now being explored for the control, detection, and typing of bacteria; as vehicles for drug delivery; and for vaccine development.
