Searching for a Younger Self: Time, Music and Ageing Masculinities in the Novel A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

    No full text
The idea that literature matters for an understanding of socio-cultural processes and phenomena is confirmed in Jennifer Egan’s inspiring novel A Visit from the Goon Squad. Four decades since the appearance of punk rock music and culture it has become necessary to incorporate issues concerning ageing in the analysis of musical subcultures (Bennet, 2018, Jennings, 2015). The contrasts of past and present, youth and ageing, older and young generations suggest that time is the most important category as an almost invisible, silent, relentless and invincible driving force. This emphasized temporal perspective shows the inevitability and incessancy of changes not only in human lives but also in the ageist world of the music industry

    Sociologija roda

--------------- IN ENGLISH: The chapter deals with the foundations and development of the sociological subdiscipline - sociology of gender. Since the main incentive for the establishment of the discipline originated from the intersection of sociological and feminist theory, the basic concepts and problems are described both historically and developmentally, and so are the latest (empirical and theoretical) tendencies in the development of this subdiscipline. Sociology of gender also deals with relations between gender and work, as well as global, structural relations. The chapter, therefore, discuss gender in the context of occupational choice, labour relations and the many changes in family and intimate relationships

Personal Stories of (Im)migrants: A Shift in Media Framing in Croatia?

Rad analizira sadržaj Jutarnjeg i Večernjeg lista u kontekstu promjene pristupa izvještavanju o (i)migrantima nakon ulaska Hrvatske u Schengen i euro zonu. Popović i sur. This paper analyses the content of Jutarnji list and Večernji list in the context of shifting approaches to reporting on (im)migrants following Croatia’s accession to the Schengen Area and the Eurozone. Migrants are often portrayed in the media as anonymous protagonists of crime stories (Čepo et al., 2020; Popović et al., 2022a). However, during 2023 and 2024, the analysed newspapers published articles that depicted (im)migrants as individuals with personal life stories. The paper is theoretically grounded in media framing theory. Previous research in Croatia has shown that negative, sensationalist, and alarmist frames prevail, often tied to the ideological orientation of actors. Reporting on migrants tends to be oversimplified, based on insufficiently verified information, with a lack of understanding of the issues and inadequate use of terminology. A key characteristic of such reporting is the conflict frame (Popović et al., 2022a). Popović et al. (2022b) proposed a series of recommendations aimed at more objective and unbiased media portrayals of migrants in Croatian media, including the suggestion that migrants be reported on as real people. In line with this recommendation, this research was conducted using a combination of quantitative and qualitative media content analysis, as well as in-depth interviews with editorial representatives from the analysed newspapers. The analysis focuses on the frequency of publication, protagonists, frames, and sentiments of such stories, the motives behind their publication, and the potential institutional and/or fi nancial frameworks within which they emerged. The study also examined whether the articles were part of a strategically planned project initiated by state or European institutions, or the result of spontaneous initiatives by journalists and editors. The findings indicate moderately positive shifts in media reporting on (im)migrants, and the research contributes to a better understanding of the role of media in the integration of (im)migrants, laying the groundwork for future analyses of media practices in Croatia and the broader European context

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Cosmetic entrepreneurs: exploring beliefs and experiences of practitioners administering non-surgical aesthetic procedures in the UK

    No full text
Cosmetic surgery has long been a controversial pinnacle of invasive aesthetic labour, but in recent years, the cosmetic landscape has diversified and expanded. Minimally invasive, non-permanent cosmetic ‘tweakments’ like injectable dermal fillers are increasingly embedded amongst, and advertised as, ‘everyday’ beauty practices. This normalization has been enabled by the accessibility of these procedures, both in terms of lower costs and locations where they are offered. In many cases, non-surgical procedures have migrated beyond medical locales and, in the UK, can be administered by a range of aesthetic practitioners across diverse spatialities, including beauty salons and spas. In light of discussions surrounding the legitimacy and scope of their business models in a sector where there currently exists little regulation, this chapter will focus on everyday cosmetic entrepreneurship(s) by aesthetic practitioners who offer non-surgical procedures. The vantage point of practitioners is key to exploring an increasingly saturated medico-cosmetic industry in the UK, and such perspectives have rarely been the focus in scholarly work, where motives and desires of cosmetic consumers have taken precedence. Using semi-structured interviews with practitioners focussing on their role(s) within these medico-cosmetic servicescapes, we situate non-surgical, often discreetly transformative, interventions firmly within everyday (gendered) routinized body projects
