The paper discusses a recent sociolinguistic study on the linguistic awareness of Polish youth from Lithuania, carried out in schools of the Polish national minority in Vilnius. The study involves an analysis and comparison of responses about nationality, mother tongue, situational usage (interactive language use, non-interactive exposure, inner language) as well as knowledge of particular languages. Almost all Poles from Vilnius claim that they understand Russian, Lithuanian and Polish. The findings of the study are discussed in the context of the uniqueness of multilingualism and simultaneous usage of several languages. The research shows that the declaration of the mother tongue is a choice of identity in a multilingual society. At the end of school education, multilingual Poles are users of the Lithuanian language at the level of their native language

The aim of this study is to determine the attitudes of Polish youth in Lithuania towards the Lithuanian, Russian, English, and Polish languages. The material has been drawn from qualitative research conducted through questionnaires. In order to summarize the results of the research, 147 questionnaires completed by respondents aged 16–34, who declared Polish nationality, were selected. The survey was done between February 20 and March 3, 2023, via Google Forms. Results of the 2023 attitude survey were compared with those of the 2010 sociolinguistic survey. 98.6% (n = 145) of the young respondents consider Polish to be their mother tongue or one of their mother tongues, which is 18.4% higher than the result obtained in the 2010 survey. Preferences for the most beautiful, the necessary, the most common, and the most prestigious language were compared with the preferences that were described in my article (Geben 2013). Results of the statistical analysis show that Lithuanian is the most frequently mentioned language among the most necessary languages, but English is still the language the most in need for young respondents (63.9%, n = 94). Polish retains its position as the most beautiful language for those whose mother tongue is Polish. Polish has become the most common language for young respondents (67.3%, n = 99), with Russian still in a second place in this category (47.6%, n = 70).

Wyekscerpowałam też onimy o funkcji kompozycyjnej — tworzące narrację i kreujące językowy obraz Wilna. The Polish Language in the Linguistic Landscape of Vilnius The aim of this article is to analyse the use of Polish-language signs in public space in Vilnius and to identify the reasons for the presence or, conversely, absence of Polish in the linguistic landscape of Vilnius in 2022. The subject of the study is inscriptions in Polish found in public space in the Old Town in Vilnius. As a result of the exploration carried out from December 2021 to May 2022, 52 photos of inscriptions in Polish were taken. The signs were analysed using the method adopted in the study of the linguistic landscape. They were classified according to their linguistic specificity into (1) monolingual, (2) polyphonic and (3) mixed signs. Apart from this, they were also classified into public and private ones. The specificity of the functioning of the Polish language in Vilnius is that it functions in speech rather than writing. Poles from Vilnius are multilingual and use several languages alternately. The willingness to remain anonymous by assigning oneself to the majority of society speaking a more prestigious language means that informal inscriptions (e.g. graffiti) are not created in Polish. Information signs in languages other than Lithuanian are not seen by the respondents as necessary, and their installation is effectively hampered by the system of administrative penalties.

( Merry Christmas!) On greetings in the Polish language in Vilnius

    No full text
This paper deals with differences in the code of politeness in the Polish language found in Lithuania. I have identifi ed expressive acts of speech (greetings, congratulations) in local Polish saturated with Russian and Lithuanian patterns. They are in use even among those Poles who speak standard Polish on an everyday basis. Lithuanian and Russian syntax templates that appear in the context of offi cial or semi-offi cial formal speech are also used in the written form of the Polish language in Lithuania (e.g. Pozdrawiam ze Świętem (Merry Christmas), where the Polish standard is Wesołych Świąt). The notion “cultural scenarios of thinking” is used while analysing the content of such speech acts. I indicate the diffi culty of learning the code of politeness in schools: the examples for my material were collected from websites of Polish secondary schools in Lithuania and other places of offi cial Polish discourse where deviations from the standard Polish code of politeness are detected. It can be stated that Poles in Lithuania express their greetings in Polish by using forms of politeness from the Russian and Lithuanian languages
