Surgical and implantation reconstruction in a patient with giant-cell central reparative granuloma

    No full text
The giant-cell central reparative granuloma, unlike other giant-cell neoplasias, is mainly found in maxillary bones, particularly in the mandible. We report a patient study of giant-cell central reparative granuloma in the mandible extending from dental elements 34 to 44. The patient underwent excision of a neoplasm and reconstruction of the mandible via an autologous bone graft of the iliac crest. To restore fully, functionally, and aesthetically the masticatory apparatus after verification of graft stability, four osseointegrated implants were fixed, and an "overdenture" prosthesis was then applied, thus finally solving the problem

Steel Additive Construction: New possibilities for efficient structural systems

    No full text
The digitalization of the construction sector could potentially produce more efficient structures, reduce material waste and increase work safety. Current strategies for the realization of automated steel constructions see the application of metal Additive Manufacturing processes (and in particular Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing, WAAM) as an opportunity to build a new generation of efficient steel structures with reduced material use. This, though, requires advanced multidisciplinary knowledge in manufacturing, metallurgy, structural engineering and computational design. Recent effort has been made in order to combine computational design with current digital fabrication procedures to realize resource-efficient steel structures for the future. The present work aims at providing an integrated design approach to develop resource-efficient structural elements combining computational design algo-rithms with considerations on the WAAM fabrication process, structural performances and verifications. The idea comes from the preliminary results achieved in terms of new structural optimization theories, fabrication of large-scale elements with WAAM and structural verification of first prototypes. The approach is applied to three classes of structural elements (beam, joint and column). The results aim at increasing the application of metal Additive Manufacturing in construction, through the development of a new generation of resource-efficient structural members

The contribution of targeted therapy to the neoadjuvant chemoradiation of rectal cancer.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy is a commonly used option aimed to make less aggressive surgery approaches and to improve quality of life allowing a high proportion of patients operated with sphincter-sparing surgical techniques in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). During the last 5 years a number of studies have tested the efficacy of more intensive chemotherapeutic approaches by combining irinotecan or oxaliplatin with fluoropyrimidines and standard radiation treatments as well as testing combined treatments with targeted agents directed against epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) or angiogenesis. Herein, we review the results and critiques of the published studies based on the introduction of novel targeted agents in neoadjuvant therapy of LARC
