Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here

La peste nella letteratura milanese del Cinque e Seicento

    No full text
The essay offers an overview of the literary texts dedicated to the plague published in Milan on the occasion of the two historic infections, that of the 1570s and that of 1630. Linked by the protagonism of the two Borromeo archbishops, San Carlo and Manzoni’s Federico, the two events inspired a real topos in the Lombard tradition. In particular, the attention is focused on the intervention of the poet Giuliano Goselini, author of a song on the contagion which stands out for its independence from the Carolinian model, and, for the Federico’s plague, on the drama of the friar Benedetto Cinquanta, an example of ‘spiritual tragedy’ worthy of attention

"'That both English and Italians ... may be civil and humane to each other': l''Account of the Manners and Customs of Italy' di Giuseppe Baretti"

    No full text
The essay focuses on Giuseppe Baretti’s "Account of the Manners and Customs of Italy" published in London in 1768 as a firm refutation of Samuel Sharp’s slanderous "Letters from Italy" (1765) and of the books written by “those other English writers, who after a short tour have ventured to describe Italy and the Italians”. In the Preface, Baretti ascribes their distorted reports about the Bel Paese to “premature and rash judgments” and sets out to provide the English public with a new account of Italian life and culture interspersed with observations on the mistakes of those travelers whose only aim was to write fashionable books full of “slander and invective” just to please their readers’ “malignity and love of novelty”. His account results in an illuminating cultural document in which Italy is ‘explained’ to the English by an Italian intellectual long accustomed to England and English life. This allows him not only to ‘deconstruct’ Sharp’s book by punctually rebutting the prejudices and stereotypes Doctor Sharp shared with many of his contemporaries, but also to provide the reader with pregnant comparisons between the two countries. The essay also points out that Baretti’s position somewhat mirrors that of the traditional travel writer: while the latter usually reports upon a foreign nation to his fellow countrymen often surrendering, as it happens in Sharp’s "Letters", to common views and preconceived ideas, Baretti writes a book about his own country for the benefit of a foreign audience, whose culture and mentality he nevertheless knows well enough to be able to orientate his account in order to make it as appealing as possible to his English readers. A careful negotiation on the part of the author is therefore necessary, which the paper unveils in both its cultural components and argumentative strategies

The Green Papyri and the Museum of the Bible

    No full text
Through the discussion of the birth and development of the Green papyrus collection and its partial inclusion in the Museum of the Bible of Washington DC, this chapter addresses for the first time questions related to the development of papyrus collecting and publishing and their colonial roots. It shows that many collectors and academics are still following methods and practices embedded into the colonial past, and this constitutes a threat to the preservation of ancient manuscripts from Egypt. In conclusion, the author suggests how to move towards more responsible collecting and publishing

Annie Ernaux e l’impegno come forma di sperimentazione

    No full text
Clearly, this happens at the thematic level, both in her autobiographical writings and in her public speeches, in which she denounces individual and collective social injustices individual and collective social injustices that, through his writing, become personal redemption and a political goal in the struggles for civil rights. But the fundamental trait of commitment is reinterpreted by the author as an engagement d'écriture, i.e. a search for form, first and foremost linguistic-literary, and according to a more general, artistic and intermedial perspective of experimentation. The chapter analyses the relationship between politics and literature, between commitment and writing, in Ernaux's life and works, starting from the central consideration of the experimental search for an original form, as in the case of the variants of her autobiographical photo-text

Sul cambiamento di stile nella scrittura onciale

This work aim to explain the developments, still not so clear, that led to the transition from the so-called uncial old-style to an uncial new-style. Trought an attentive paleografical analysis the author tries to inquire not only times and causes, but also the places where uncial script was gradually reworked out undergoing, between V and VI c., that clear stiffening of writing’s canon that is named new-style. It demostrated on the one hand the importance of bilingual scriptoria (in particolar those situated on Byzantine East) where latin script meets the greek one, and on the other the influence of the increasing spread of biblical litterature conveyed by sumptuous codices that required an equally pictorial script just as was the latest uncial

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN LAND TENURE LAW IN ERITREA, HORN OF AFRICA

After a historical sketch of the evolution of land tenure systems in the Eritrean highlands, this paper describes the main features of the new Eritrean land law and its operative assumption that the legislation is meant to extend state control over land. The legal devices employed by the law are widely used in sub-Saharan Africa (and were largely inspired by colonial policies). The State of Eritrea frequently asserts that its recent independence gives it the opportunity to learn from other developing countries' mistakes and to avoid them. The basic patterns of the new land law, however, are common to the rest of Africa, notwithstanding the evident poor results. The central government wants its control to be widespread and pervasive. The fight against traditional social groups controlling land, at least in the highlands, is severe. Apart from a formal repeal of customary law, the state's acquisition of the power to modify village boundaries according to a scheme already completed at higher administrative levels and to introduce equal rights on land for women entails a disruption of the villages' social identity. Mandatory state control over landed property in Eritrea is, as usual, motivated by the necessity to address higher social needs. The ultimate intent, of course, is that the evolution from communal property to state property will eventually result in the widespread introduction of individual property once a sufficient level of economic development is achieved. This unfavorable attitude toward communal property is not supported by the evidence, which shows that, in fact, efficient land management can be obtained through renovation of traditional institutions.Land tenure -- Eritrea, Land tenure -- Government policy -- Eritrea, Land tenure -- Law and legislation -- Eritrea, Customary law -- Eritrea, Tenure types, Traditional -- Eritrea, Land reform -- Eritrea, Land Economics/Use,

In particular her analysis deals with some phenomena of the current legal system which seem to show an ongoing ‘‘crisis’’ of the ‘‘res judicata’’ both in the relationship between domestic law and European law and in the light of certain Italian judicial events which end up expressing a ‘‘malleability’’ of the ‘‘res judicata’’ itself

Synthesis of Pharmaceutically Active Heterocycles and Lipid Targets: Novel Rearrangements and Methods for Carbon-Heteroatom Bond Formation

    No full text
The pharmaceutical industry faces considerable challenges, not only from an R&D standpoint, but also politically and fiscally. Politically, governments around the world are trying to contain costs, and these costs are constantly the subject of intense scrutiny, with the real risk that the public health is suffering the consequences. Therefore, as scientists, we are called to innovate processes and help with witty and affordable solutions. In particular, as synthetic organic chemists, we are called to use imagination and expertise to bring new attractive organic transformations or bright improvements of existing processes, in order to maintain active and alive the real engine of innovation: research. Both from an academic and industrial point of view, new approaches for the achievement of synthetic fragments, moieties or targets are constantly required in a straightforward but brilliant fashion.\ud For our part, we decided to investigate some of the most recurrent topics in organic chemistry and provide new synthetic ideas. This work has been divided into three main chapters, which incorporate topics such as the synthesis of biologically interesting lipid targets and pharmaceutically relevant heterocyclic structures. Therefore we put in place the search for new methods aimed at the formation of new carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. We addressed concerns about the quest for selectivity in the formation of these bonds, providing stereo-, chemo- and regioselective synthetic solutions. Specifically, the work described in Chapters 1 and 2 was carried out from January 2011 to January 2013 in the laboratories of Prof. Marcantoni at the University of Camerino, and focuses on the formation of new C-C and C-heteroatom bonds for the construction of more complex heterocyclic and lipid structures, mainly involving cerium (III) salts as Lewis acids and organometallic compounds. The results presented in the third chapter were achieved from February 2013 to December 2013 under the guidance of Dr. Jeremy T. Starr at Pfizer’s Worldwide Research & Development Center in Groton, Connecticut, USA. Chapter 3 was dedicated to the study and the development of new applications of a novel thermal rearrangement of propargyl amine N-oxides, powerful acyclic precursors for the achievement of more interesting heterocyclic structure. As a proof of the validity of the method, and given the particular interest of heterocycles in medicinal chemistry, synthesis of Celebrex®, a drug commercialized by Pfizer, was carried out.\ud The author wishes to thank Prof. Enrico Marcantoni, for his guidance and for the valuable expertise continuously provided. All the people who have been part of the group over the years, for friendship and helpful discussions. Dr. Jeremy T. Starr for extraordinarily mentoring the author and for the warm welcome in his great and highly qualified group. My family and my dad for making me the person I am
