    Hyperspectral imaging to assess wine grape quality

    Grape composition is of high interest for producing quality wines. For that, grapeanalysesarenecessary,and requiresamplepreparation,whetherwithclassicalanalysesorwith NIR analyses. The aim of the study was to test the ability of hyperspectral imaging (HSI), a nondestructive analysis to assess their composition. For that, seven grape varieties were analyzed for twovintages. PLS-DA and PLS-R were realized respectively in order to classify the berries,to validate the data sets, and to provide models to assess grape composition after a 1st derivative data pretreatment. Results: HSI allowed a 100% good classification of the grape varieties. It showed good results to assess technological ripening parameters (sugar and acid contents) as well as phenolic content (TPI, Total Phenolics, Total Anthocyanins, Total Flavonoids and their extractable equivalents) (globally R2 > 0.81). However, itwasnotpossibletoreachthecolorintensityofgrapes.Conclusion: Hyperspectralimaging led to generate good models to assess wine grape composition.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Oxygen-induced faults in bottled white wine: A review of technological and chemical characteristics

    Several changes can take place in wine after blotting. Some of them lead to the desired evolution of wine being more complex, round and pleasant. However, unexpected changes can also occur ascribable to the premature wine oxidation (PremOx) arising when a wine, presumably with aging potential, results oxidized and often undrinkable. The complexity of PremOx, where aromas are also involved, makes difficult to identify all the oxidation products, and to predict its occurrence in wines. Despite most studies have been focused on the effect of time after wine bottling on PremOx as well as pinking phenomena, identification of pinking markers, reliable methods for their detection in wine, and correlations between markers and the wine-bottle-closure system are still unknown. This review aimed to highlight aspects PremOx-related, including wine-bottle-closure system, color change, with particular emphasis on pinking, and aroma decay based on the current knowledge becoming the bases for future perspectives

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Effects of Apical, Late-Season Leaf Removal on Vine Performance and Wine Properties in Sangiovese Grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.)

    Abstract: An urgent challenge posed by climate change in warm grapevine-growing areas is accelerated ripening, which leads to rapid sugar accumulation while phenolics and aroma traits lag behind. Techniques that enable selectively delaying the sugar accumulation process without affecting the accumulation of secondary metabolites are essential. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of apical-to-cluster defoliation, manually applied in 2019 at the onset of veraison (D1) or 20 days later (D2), which removed about 30–40% of the pending total leaf area without altering the cluster microclimate compared with a non-defoliated control (C). Ripening trends, vegetative growth, yield components, and the final grape and wine composition, as well as wine sensorial attributes, were assessed. Although both treatments significantly lowered the final leaf area-to-yield ratio (0.80–0.90 m2/kg) compared with the 1.35 m2/kg recorded in the C vines, only D1 reduced the final total soluble solids (TSS) at harvest (2 ◦Brix less than C). However, the total anthocyanins were similarly limited, and titratable acidity (TA) did not differ from the C vines. The D1 wine was deemed similar to that made from control plants. Conversely, D2 failed to delay ripening, yet the D2 wine was deemed superior in terms of olfactory intensity, body, fruitiness, balance, and overall preference. Although the study was conducted over a single season, the results are robust enough to conclude that the timing of defoliation—i.e., the level of TSS concurrently reached by the C treatment—is crucial to achieving specific effects. Early defoliation appears valid for postponing ripening into a cooler period, making it quite interesting in warm–hot areas with a very long growing season; a much later defoliation, likely due to the interaction between mean canopy age and more light filtering from above the cluster zone, can elevate the quality of and appreciation for the final wine
