Winter 2016; 10(1):35-41.AbstractObjectiveCerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive CNS disorder due to an insult to the growing brain, usually occurring in the first two years of life. During the recent years, its etiology has been changed; perinatal and postnatal insults are not considered as its main causes in developed countries any more. The aim of this study was to evaluate the causes of CP in children in southern Iran.Materials & MethodsOverall, 200 children with CP aged 1-12 yr old referring to Pediatric Neurology Clinic affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran between 2012 and 2013 were enrolled. In addition, 200 healthy age and sex-matched children were considered as the control group. Exclusion criteria were isolated movement disorders with no other evidence of CP, progressive neurologic disorders, metabolic disorders, and incomplete or uncertain past history. After collecting the data on pregnancy period, prenatal history and past medical problems, they were analyzed with appropriate statistical methods.ResultsMaternal age, medical problems during pregnancy period, route of delivery, head circumference at birth, neonatal admission, neonatal jaundice, and prematurity were the main risk factors for CP.DiscussionThe distribution of risk factors of CP is different from that of developed countries in our region. Pre- and peri-natal etiologies are still among the common causes of CP in Iran

Long-memory stochastic volatility model calibration using deep neural nets

Widespread use of stochastic volatility models in the financial industry is bottlenecked by the complexity and intractability they present. Since the seminal work in quantitative finance by Black et al. and Merton, the infamous Black-Scholes model has been extensively used in the industry for vanilla and exotic option pricing. Although the model assumes constant volatility which is not observed in the market, the widespread use is sustained due to its closed-form solution for European vanilla option. However, with the advent of neural networks, stochastic volatility models are becoming increasing tractable. The use of neural networks to learn the expectation function of the underlying stochastic volatility processes for calibration makes application of these more involved stochastic volatility models in the industrial settings practical. This thesis extends this application of neural networks to the calibration of long-memory stochastic volatility (LMSV) models, a class of stochastic volatility models characterized by fractional Brownian motion. The specific challenge with these long-memory models is that they are non-Markovian in nature and simulation can be time-consuming and costly. We show that by using neural networks we can capture these non-Markovian characteristics and quickly calibrate them to ever-evolving market conditions despite their high computational cost.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2023-05-01The student, Ahnaf Masroor, accepted the attached license on 2021-04-29 at 13:27.The student, Ahnaf Masroor, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2021-04-29 at 13:40.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2021-04-29 at 15:14.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15881 on 2021-09-16 at 17:01:25Made available in DSpace on 2021-09-17T02:34:09Z (GMT). Experimental verification of analytical strength and deformation methods for single and multi-panel nailed CLT shear walls

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is becoming a feasible alternative as structural material for midand high-rise buildings. Although CLT walls are appropriate for resisting lateral loads from wind and earthquakes, the current provisions in the Canadian Standard for Engineering Design in Wood lack analytical expressions for estimating their resistance and deflection. In this thesis, the performance of nailed single and couple CLT shear walls is investigated by comparing UNBC test data with the strength and stiffness predictions using analytical proposals. Four methods are considered: Method A (Casagrande et al. 2017), considers the minimum strength value of the hold-down and the vertical fasteners; Method B (Shahnewaz et al. 2019), which accounts for the rocking resistance of all connectors; Method C (Masroor et al. 2020) which accounts for the bi-axial behaviour of connectors; and Method D (Nolet et al. 2019) which describes the elastic-perfectly plastic behaviour of CLT shear walls while neglecting the bi-axial behaviour of brackets. The best match for the elastic behaviour of the nailed shear walls was achieved using Method B, while Method C reasonably predicted the inelastic shear wall behaviour. With the validation against test results, designers should consider using either method depending on the design intentions. Future research should aim at either extending Method B (Shahnewaz et al. 2019) towards the inelastic behaviour or improving Method C (Masroor et al. 2020) in the elastic range

Making of an all-purpose load transducer

    No full text
There are situations that require the determination of loads being transmitted to a structure. It is not always possible to insert a load cell, so it is proposed that the structure itself and a set of strain gages be used to determine each of the applied loads (forces and moments) that caused the measured strains. In essence, the structure has become a transducer;Although a set of loads will uniquely deform a structure, the measurements can only be made at a finite number of points. However, in most situations, this data is sufficient to reveal the combination of loads that caused it;This dissertation describes the development of a technique for determining the loads from measured strains. Scope and limitations of the technique are discussed along with the associated error estimates. The penultimate chapter describes an actual experiment performed in the laboratory to confirm the theoretical developments described in the first three chapters. Important conclusions are drawn in the last chapter, which also points to future developments anticipated by the author.</p

A Critical Review on the Book Hussain Ibn Musa (AS), His Life, Personality, Sepulcher

    No full text
Hussain ibn Musa ibn Jafar is a famous Alawi person who transmitted some Hadiths from his father Imam Musa al Kazim and his brother, Imam Ali ibn Musa al Rida (A.S). This lofty position and proximity to the Imamate line, caused the construction of some attributed Sepulchers to him in many cities, of which Tabas, located in the east of Iran, has more fame. Ali Akhavan Mahdavi has written a book on this important personality, his life, and his real place of burring. The present study aims to examine the book critically, therefore, tries to introduce and examine the book, then discusses some problems in it and presents suggestions regarding both the form and the content. So, we prepare our study with the use of a descriptive-analytical approach and of course a special usage of the main historical sources to which compare the contents of them. In conclusion, the author reached some important innovations in comparison with similar sources and studies, and it is completely clear by analyzing the content of hadith and genealogy books. Examination of the Akhavan Mahdavi's book showed that although this book has many advantages and has been effective on subsequent works written on this subject, but shortcomings such as lack of research background and critique of sources, the author's little use of Hadith and Rijal sources are among the cons. Some of the author's citations have diminished the book's credibility

Diversity Promoting Online Sampling for Streaming Video Summarization

    No full text
abstract: Video summarization is gaining popularity in the technological culture, where positioning the mouse pointer on top of a video results in a quick overview of what the video is about. The algorithm usually selects frames in a time sequence through systematic sampling. Invariably, there are other applications like video surveillance, web-based video surfing and video archival applications which can benefit from efficient and concise video summaries. In this project, we explored several clustering algorithms and how these can be combined and deconstructed to make summarization algorithm more efficient and relevant. We focused on two metrics to summarize: reducing error and redundancy in the summary. To reduce the error online k-means clustering algorithm was used; to reduce redundancy we applied two different methods: volume of convex hulls and the true diversity measure that is usually used in biological disciplines. The algorithm was efficient and computationally cost effective due to its online nature. The diversity maximization (or redundancy reduction) using technique of volume of convex hulls showed better results compared to other conventional methods on 50 different videos. For the true diversity measure, there has not been much work done on the nature of the measure in the context of video summarization. When we applied it, the algorithm stalled due to the true diversity saturating because of the inherent initialization present in the algorithm. We explored the nature of this measure to gain better understanding on how it can help to make summarization more intuitive and give the user a handle to customize the summary

The study of translation in its manifold forms is now a well-established field of scholarly activity. Now it is a subject of serious research and study. The basic aim of this study is to overview the past tradition of translation and Tahira Naqvi’s Translation of Manto,Hajrah Masroor and Ismat Chughtai’s fiction. It attempts to check the style of translator and focuses on the issues such as nature of the literary text and different roles of translator as writer, reader and interpreter. It also deals with various qualities and responsibilities that should be a part of translator's repertoire in literary translation. A brief life sketch and research work of the Translator is also given who has translated the source language into target language. This research traces the act of translation as a dynamic process of the Text as a whole which captures the aesthetic, linguistic, and cultural sensibilities of its changing audience while keeping in it the message of holistic continuity of subcontinent civilization. It is important to examine the ways in which the author retain the cultural expressions, interprets those for his audience of the target language and properly establish the aesthetic and stylistic features of translated fiction

This study provides observation on 21 species of amphibians and reptiles obtained during various field trips in Afghanistan from 2007 to 2018. The core of this study is distributional data collected mostly by the second author of this paper that were systematically evaluated. Our records show a notable expansion of the current distribution range for several species and highlight the need for more extensive further sampling within the entire country. The first record of Cyrtopodion agamuroides (Nikolsky, 1900) complex for Afghanistan is presented here, increasing the number of herpetofauna in the country to 117 species
