All who positively perceive the Summerhill school, celebrated in the year 2003, 120 years from the birth and 30 years from the death of its founder A.S. Neill (1883-1973). This school refers to the boarding school which has been in existence continuously until today since 1924. From the beginning, the Summerhill School was opened for children having educational problems, later on, its creator himself classified the school as a therapeutic school for normal children. The school is based on the principle of confidence and partnership between boarders and adults, Neill left the children freedom and created conditions for self-education within the framework of self-governing organisation of the school life. Neill is an author of many publications in the field of children´s pedagogy and psychology. The influence of this institute upon the present education has always been incomparable to the number of school-leavers. This an oldest running school having an almost unchanged autonomy offering optional presence in lessons

Varieties of scientific system: from veblen to the postmoderns

    No full text
The question addressed is, have we achieved what Veblen called "evolutionary social science", that is, a systematic account of socioeconomic change? Taking account of different meanings of "systematic" and observing some of scientific systems that have held place in the history of Economics, the author concludes the following. The term "evolutionary science" is an oxymoron, and Veblen was not a systematic social scientist in any firm, objective sense. But then, until the end of the twentieth century neither was anyone else. It is impossible to reduce to a logically consistent model a process that is infused with radical change. Given the creative intuition that Veblen ascribed to the human agent, reason and logic are infused with morality and emotion. Social science and ethics are distinguished by their subject matter and their way of addressing it, not by one being fiction and the other truth. Both are fictive

“Özgürlük Okulu”, Alexander Sutherland Neill’ in öncülüğünü yaptığı Summerhill düşüncesine genel bir bakış sağlamaktadır. “Özgürlük Okulu” kitabı, 7 bölümden oluşmaktadır: (1) Summerhill Özgürlük Okulu, (2) Çocuk Yetiştirme, (3) Cinsellik, (4) Din ve Ahlak, (5) Çocukların Sorunları, (6) Anne Baba Sorunları ve (7) Sorular ve Yanıtlar. Yazar, Summerhill düşüncesinin geleceğinin çok büyük bir önem taşıdığını savunarak, çocuklara özgürlük içinde büyüme fırsatı verilmesi gerektiğini vurgulamaktadır. Çalışmanın giriş kısmında kitapta yer alan Summerhill düşüncesi, Summerhill Okulunun yapısı ve Alexander Sutherland Neill’ in çocuk yetiştirmeye dair görüşleri üzerinde durulmaktadır. There is a tendency towards alternative schools by both families and educators in Turkey. One of these alternative schools is Summerhill School, which aims to give children the freedoms that classical schools cannot give, and has a learning-centered, flexible and functional program that takes into account reconciliation with students. In this study; it is aimed to look through the different dimensions of the book that written by Alexander Sutherland Neill: “Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Childrearing.” “Summerhill” was translated by Nilgun Sarman into Turkish. “Summerhill” provides an overview of the thought of Summerhill that pioneered by Neill. "Summerhill" consists of 7 chapters: (1) Summerhill School, (2) Child-Rearing, (3) Sex, (4) Religion and Morals, (5) Children's Problems, (6) Parents' Problems, and (7) Questions and Answers. The author argues that the future of Summerhill thought is very important and emphasizes that children should be given the opportunity to grow in freedom. In the introduction of the study, it’s focuses on Summerhill thought in the book, the structure of Summerhill School and Neill's views on childrearing. In other parts of the book, there are informations about sex attitudes, sex instruction, religion, moral instruction, children's problems, parents' problems. In the discussion part of the study, the philosophies that underlie the thought of Summerhill and the applicability of Summerhill in our country are discussed. With this book review, it is thought that the study may serve as a useful guide for the target group that consists of researchers, teachers and parents

A Bayesian network model for spatial event surveillance

    No full text
AbstractMethods for spatial cluster detection attempt to locate spatial subregions of some larger region where the count of some occurrences is higher than expected. Event surveillance consists of monitoring a region in order to detect emerging patterns that are indicative of some event of interest. In spatial event surveillance, we search for emerging patterns in spatial subregions.A well-known method for spatial cluster detection is Kulldorff’s [M. Kulldorff, A spatial scan statistic, Communications in Statistics: Theory and Methods 26 (6) (1997)] spatial scan statistic, which directly analyzes the counts of occurrences in the subregions. Neill et al. [D.B. Neill, A.W. Moore, G.F. Cooper, A Bayesian spatial scan statistic, Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) 18 (2005)] developed a Bayesian spatial scan statistic called BSS, which also directly analyzes the counts. We developed a new Bayesian-network-based spatial scan statistic, called BNetScan, which models the relationships among the events of interest and the observable events using a Bayesian network. BNetScan is an entity-based Bayesian network that models the underlying state and observable variables for each individual in a population. We compared the performance of BNetScan to Kulldorff’s spatial scan statistic and BSS using simulated outbreaks of influenza and cryptosporidiosis injected into real Emergency Department data from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is an open question whether we can obtain acceptable results using a Bayesian network if the probability distributions in the network do not closely reflect reality, and thus, we examined the robustness of BNetScan relative to the probability distributions used to generate the data in the experiments. Our results indicate that BNetScan outperforms the other methods and its performance is robust relative to the probability distribution that is used to generate the data
