    Estimation of soil enzyme activity with respect to decomposition of leaf litter types

    ABSTRACT The measurement of enzyme activities give an index of the extent of specific biochemical processes in soil and in many situations acts as an indicator of soil fertility. Historical evidences show that this area was once a thick forest but widespread forest denudation by human settlements form early nineteenth century had converted the entire area barren up to the line of horizon. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of litter types of the above-mentioned four tree species on edaphic properties of tropical deciduous afforested ecosystem in Srisailam reserve forest. The present climatic record of the local meteorological station shows average monthly temperature of 26.10C in 2010 (range 10.90C in January to 38.40 C in May), 26.40C in 2011 (range 12.40C in January to 37.70C in June), total annual rainfall of 1516.7 mm in 2010 and 1381.5 mm in 2011, and mean monthly relative humidity 78.1% in 2010 and 77.8% in 2011. The changes in enzyme activities were clearly evident with respect to leaf litter types and between winter, summer and rainy Seasons. Among different enzymes the activities of invertase, protease and acid phosphatase were higher than that of amylase, cellulase and dehydrogenase in all the sites. The enzyme activity of all the sites, except Shorea showed equally high levels during rainy season. Keywords: Srisailam, Invertase, Amylase, Cellulase, Enzyme activity.     Response of soil–surface arthropod population densities across the 15 different soil management treatments

    ABSTRACT In India, there have been very few studies to quantify the effects of soil macrofauna activity in farmland, and on the effects of farm practices on the structure and function of soil arthropod populations. Thus, the present investigation was undertaken and efforts were made to assess the response of soil–surface arthropod population densities across 15 different soil management treatments. The relative population density of soil–surface inhabiting arthropods were monitored using pitfall traps. Pitfall traps have been used often in studies examining the occurrence and activity of epigeic–invertebrates. These arthropods were sampled in each plot every month during three seasons, i.e., rainy (June to September,) post rainy (October to January) and summer (February to May) seasons. Each pitfall trap consisted of a glass jar (12 cm high with a diameter of 5 cm at the mouth), which was sunk into the ground so that its upper rim (mouth of the bottle) was flushed with the soil surface. The mean density of total arthropods were significantly low in annual treatments compared with those of the perennial ley treatments. Under the annual crop, in zero–tillage treatments, the density was low in bare amendment while it was high in rice-straw amendment. In shallow–tillage treatments, it was lower in rice–straw amendment and increased to 22 in bare amendment, In deep–tillage treatments, it was low in bare amendment, which increased to 28 in farmyard manure amendment. In perennial ley treatments, the density was low in C. ciliaris + S. hamata treatment, which reached 35 in pigeon pea + S. hamata treatment.     Cutting tool condition monitoring of the turning process using artificial intelligence

    This thesis relates to the application of Artificial Intelligence to tool wear monitoring. The main objective is to develop an intelligent condition monitoring system able to detect when a cutting tool is worn out. To accomplish this objective it is proposed to use a combined Expert System and Neural Network able to process data coming from external sensors and combine this with information from the knowledge base and thereafter estimate the wear state of the tool. The novelty of this work is mainly associatedw ith the configurationo f the proposeds ystem.W ith the combination of sensor-baseidn formation and inferencer ules, the result is an on-line system that can learn from experience and can update the knowledge base pertaining to information associated with different cutting conditions. Two neural networks resolve the problem of interpreting the complex sensor inputs while the Expert System, keeping track of previous successe, stimatesw hich of the two neuraln etworks is more reliable. Also, mis-classificationsa re filtered out through the use of a rough but approximate estimator, the Taylor's tool life equation. In this study an on-line tool wear monitoring system for turning processesh as been developed which can reliably estimate the tool wear under common workshop conditions. The system's modular structurem akesi t easyt o updatea s requiredb y different machinesa nd/or processesT. he use of Taylor's tool life equation, although weak as a tool life estimator, proved to be crucial in achieving higher performance levels. The application of the Self Organizing Map to tool wear monitoring is, in itself, new and proved to be slightly more reliable then the Adaptive Resonance Theory neural network

    Stable and active CuxO/TiO2 nanostructured catalyst for proficient hydrogen production under solar light irradiation

    The nanostructured TiO2 materials impregnated with Cu were prepared via a simple and eco-friendly preparation route. The materials are comprised of nano -tubes, -rods and -particles whose surfaces are modified by a fine dispersion of CuxO clusters (Cu degrees and Cu2O) as evidenced by TEM and XPS analysis. Structural and optical characterization ascertained the biphasic (anatase-rutile) crystal structure of TiO2 nano-objects. The presence of CuxO at the surface extends the absorption from the UV to the visible light range. In contrast to the pristine and calcined TiO2 nanotubes (TNT), the CuxO/TiO2 nanostructures (Cu1.5TNT) exhibit a prolonged life-time of photogenerated charge carriers and decreased surface area as confirmed by the photoluminescence spectra and surface area analysis, respectively. The prepared photocatalysts were tested for hydrogen (H-2) production activity using water, mono and di-hydroxylic alcohols solutions under solar light irradiation. Surprisingly, Cu-modified TiO2 nanostructures (Cu1.5TNT) have shown an unusually high rate of H-2 production of about 114.9 +/- 2 mmol h(-1) g(cat)(-1) under a set of optimized experimental conditions. Among all of the studied photocatalysts, the Cu1.5TNT catalyst exhibits enhancements of 33 and 18 fold in the H-2 production rate as compared to the commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (TNP) and calcined TNT, respectively. We report here on the highest known rate of H-2 production using the nanostructured Cu-doped TiO2 photocatalyst (Cu1.5TNT) under solar light irradiation. This unprecedented H-2 production is attributed to synergistic effects of nanocrystalline structures, morphology and copper oxide species (Cu degrees and Cu2O) present in the photocatalyst.
