A product design ontology for enhancing shape processing in design workflows

    No full text
Effective and efficient information management and knowledge sharing has become an essential part of more and more professional tasks in the Product Development Process. Among the varius Knowledge Management technologies, ontologies offer new possibilities for representing, handling and retrieving product related knowledge, and for online collaboration. We conceived a Product Design Ontology (PDO) which especially addresses researchers in industrial product design and engineering analysis who need to share shape data and to develop software tools. In particular, we formalised the task-specific information associated to a shape, and the functionality and usage of shape processing methods in specific tasks of the design workflow. The PDO, thanks to the ontologydriven metadata on shapes and tools, may be also useful in industry on the one hand for training and for retrieving shape-related information, on the other hand for supporting benchmarking of processing tools and gathering the knowledge about shape processing workflows.Science Foundation Ireland; Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technolog

A semantic web approach to CE

S.193-200Collaboration and communication is vital for concurrent engineering and concurrent enterprises. Studies show that members of product development teams spend more and more time for communication, information and document management and have less time for the creative part. Online and off-line collaboration tools address the needs of CE but searching for information and sharing knowledge still follows the old metaphor of knowledge management, i.e. knowledge can only be shared (and accessed) when a common terminology is used. To overcome this limitation, we aim to investigate emerging Semantic Web technologies that offer new possibilities through modelling and using the domain knowledge to better support users of different disciplines to exchange information and knowledge without using the other parties terminology. This paper presents one of the first approaches to tackle information and knowledge sharing by using the latest - still emerging - Semantic Web technologies. We present the system's motivation, architecture and use examples. Furthermore we report on results from user test (done by users from Schenck Pegasus GmbH and Italdesign Giugiaro). We describe the experience that we gathered with the different Semantic Web technologies and give an outlook to future research and development needs

S.471-485Effective and efficient information retrieval, knowledge sharing and combining has become an essential part of more and more professional tasks and work flows in different kinds of projects. Our aim is to investigate the use of emerging Semantic Web technologies, tools, and standards in the support of effective information retrieval in real multi-disciplinary activities, such as innovative product design. This paper presents an approach to knowledge sharing and information support that has been developed and adopted, the information system architecture that is being developed to test both this approach, and the Semantic Web techniques that are used in its implementation, some early results, and a discussion of related work in information systems and Semantic Web techniques and tools

Information management on the basis of semantic-web techniques or a Google for developers

Information retrieval often suffers from the lack of suitable search tools or the query complexity. The search of some concrete information on the base of file names or the coincidental occurrence of key words in files is little helpful because the obtainable matches are too much subject to chance. Therefore an effective search must be based on the semantic interpretation of the query and additionally casts of the query into the context of an application domain. Here the development of the search machine prototype WIDE is presented, which builds up the query interpretation on Semantic Web techniques. The search machine can be configured for application domains and is able to map a query to different data sources in parallel. The search machine processes the retrieved results graphically and associates the concepts used in the Query with thematically related concepts. The search machine can be used to retrieve text documents or test bed results of experiments archived in ASAMODS data source

A robust nonlinear scale space change detection approach for SAR images

In this paper, we propose a change detection approach based on nonlinear scale space analysis of change images for robust detection of various changes incurred by natural phenomena and/or human activities in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images using Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSERs). To achieve this, a variant of the log-ratio image of multitemporal images is calculated which is followed by Feature Preserving Despeckling (FPD) to generate nonlinear scale space images exhibiting different trade-offs in terms of speckle reduction and shape detail preservation. MSERs of each scale space image are found and then combined through a decision level fusion strategy, namely "selective scale fusion" (SSF), where contrast and boundary curvature of each MSER are considered. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using real multitemporal high resolution TerraSAR-X images and synthetically generated multitemporal images composed of shapes with several orientations, sizes, and backscatter amplitude levels representing a variety of possible signatures of change. One of the main outcomes of this approach is that different objects having different sizes and levels of contrast with their surroundings appear as stable regions at different scale space images thus the fusion of results from scale space images yields a good overall performance

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a lean product development benchmarking. Regardless of the industry organizations have been working, some problems are common - communication barriers, lack of a structured PDP lean controls failed, deliveries that exceed the planned period - indeed, in much waste of knowledge and information. One of the successful ways of addressing these problems is through the approach (lean), which acts constantly in reducing waste, to deliver customer value. From the diagnosis was possible to propose a set of actions for the process of developing products of each company can be structured in a lean, improving competitiveness. The work was conducted through Survey and case studies with large companies that develop products and are in Brazil, based on the gap in the literature of the lack of indicators to diagnose how lean processes are product development considering the principles and practices the lean approach. After reviewing the literature on the topics of lean product development and benchmarking, metrics were defined and the steps of the method. Initially the method was tested by a Survey of 500 companies with sales in Brazil. After, for further refinement of the method, the same was applied to 12 companies in the sectors of autoindustry, capital goods, textiles, electronics and metallurgy. The main contribution of this work is a simple, useful and replicable method, which has a set of measurable indicators and graphical representation identifying the practices of lean product development, as well as a structured guide for the implementation of improvements that will allow companies from different branches are compared nationally and also internationally. The results showed quantitatively that companies are implementing lean in PDP isolated or systemic across categories - Process, Management, Structure, People, Product, Customer, Supplier and Wastes
