This qualitative-hermeneutic study about contemporary neo-paganism on the internet explores the effect the medium World Wide Web has on neo-pagans and their construction of identity. The following three issues are elaborated as methodical reflections: first the choice of research instruments is explained, second the premises on which an analysis of the World Wide Web as action space, medium and source must be based are considered, and third the most important terms for the analysis are clarified. At this point two new terms are coined by the author: the ‘Open-Source’-Spiritualität (“open source spirituality”), based on Cowan, and cvK-unterstützte transformative Identitätskonstruktion (“transformative construction of identity by means of computer-mediated communication”). For both phenomena the World Wide Web is indispensable – and both could only emerge due to the possibilities of computer-mediated communication. The term ‘Open-Source’-Spiritualität signifies that this form of spirituality is developed in a community in the same way as software in ‘open-source’-networks in the IT-sector (e.g. developments for GNU/Linux). Everyone can contribute their views and there are no dogmas or restrictions from a higher hierarchical level. This form of spirituality is changing continuously. All new developments are shared with the community and can therefore be remodelled again by oneself as well as by other members. The “source code” is presented in a dialogical-collaborative way in virtual space, where it can be modified, individually “hacked” and incorporated into one’s part-identity in ‘physical life’. So ’Open-Source’-Spiritualität can never be a homogeneous and completed entity. The term CvK-unterstützte transformative Identitätskonstruktion illustrates that the identity work, that neo-pagans perform by means of computer-mediated communication, is a transformative construction of identity. Different elements are searched for, interlaced and reinterpreted in a highly individual manner, and merge into a personal spiritual part-identity, which therefore is in continual modification. After the methodical reflections a short overview is given of the main movements of modern neo-paganism. Exemplary abstracts from the World Wide Web are analysed and new peculiarities that have evolved there are investigated. It is shown that especially in individually and personally constructed ‘Open-Source’-Spiritualität, the autonomy of one’s specific religious belief as well as the equality of all individual spiritual perceptions is explicitly encouraged and inspired. The following chapter systematically analyses the major issues of neo-paganism (emphasized dissociation from Christianity, closeness to nature, and criticism of patriarchy) and examines the use of the computer-mediated communication. Then the empirical data is introduced, which has been collected additionally to the analysis of web sites and discussion forums. Two periods of interviews and a survey provided the extensive data, illustrating how neo-pagans themselves assess the significance of the World Wide Web, regarding the construction of their personal spiritual identity. The material greatly supports the assertions and propositions made in this thesis. In the next chapter the focus is on the main issue of this study, i.e. how neo-pagans use the World Wide Web as a communications platform to conduct the work of constructing identity, as required by the changed social conditions. In a critical recourse on Beck’s theses on the „risk society“ it is demonstrated how neo-pagans master the task of a bricolage-esque new construction of their spiritual identity by using the means provided by the internet. Therefore the specific neo-pagan way of handling this communications platform is explored and it is noted that neo-pagans in general do not use it as a spiritual space, but rather as a platform for information, contact and for networking with like-minded people. The increasing loss of “great narratives” (Lyotard) necessitates stronger work on individual “small narratives”, for which the World Wide Web provides a new and enormous “warehouse of ‘last’ meanings” (Luckmann). Neo-pagans are on a continual “spiritual ambulation” and meet on the internet at “virtual campfires”, which offer social embedding and exchange with kindred spirits. Often they are places for “coming out of the broom closet” (Cowan) and for meeting people, with whom reunions and friendships in ‘physical life’ can arise. This research study has achieved to show how for neo-pagans a new era has arisen since the accessibility and affordability of the World Wide Web gave them the means to access information, communicate, and gather together on- and offline with like-minded people. This allowed them to build personal and communal spiritual identities to an extend, which would otherwise not have been possible

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
