Caterina Colombini, o della cugina sedotta. Una ‘ricostruzione’ della figura di Caterina attraverso i testi
In this essay the author demonstrates that it is possible to “reconstruct” the figure of Caterina Colombini (1340?-1387) – Giovanni Colombini’s cousin – through a group of texts: the hagiography of Caterina, the letters sent to her by Giovanni Colombini and, finally, Giovanni’s biography written by Feo Belcari. The author divides his text into four parts: the first part analyzes the content of Caterina’s hagiography; the second examines the linguistic form of the hagiographic text; in the third, the author analyzes the latent meaning of the window, a symbolic place where Giovanni and Caterina converse on divine topics; in the last part, to conclude, the teachings that Giovanni gives to Catherine and her spiritual daughters – the Gesuate – are analyzed
Continued Progress Towards Efficient Functionalization of Natural and Non Natural Targets Under Mild Conditions. Oxygenation via C-H Bond Activation with Dioxiranes
The successful isolation and characterization of a dioxirane species in the 1988 opened up a one of the most attractive methods for the efficient oxidation of simple and/or structurally complex molecules. Dioxiranes today rank among the most powerful tools in organic chemistry, with numerous applications in commercially important processes. These are quickly and remarkably recognized as efficient oxygen transfer agents, especially for epoxidations and for a wide range of O-insertion into C-H bonds. Dioxiranes also appear as highly selective (chemo-, regio- and stereo-) oxidants, despite their reactivity under mild and strictly neutral conditions controlled by a combination of steric and electronic factors and possess catalytic activity. In this review, we discuss some of the most recent and significant developments in the selective homogeneous and heterogeneous oxyfunctionalization of non-activated C-H bonds in hydrocarbons of natural and non-natural targets using isolated dioxiranes or more generally, using the ketones (i.e., the dioxirane precursors) as organocatalysts

Caterina Tarabotti Unveiled
Caterina Tarabotti (1615–1693) never identified herself as a painter in contemporary
documents or claimed authorship of any picture with her signature. She would have
surely joined the ranks of the many anonymous women painters of her time, were
it not for the art critic and historian Marco Boschini (1602–1681). In his La Carta
del Navegar Pitoresco (1660), Boschini was the first to notice Caterina’s talents and
provide information about her life.1
Alluding to her namesake saint and surname,
Boschini infused the painter’s biography with lyric flair. A light coming out of the
Varotari workshop, Caterina was, according to Boschini, a virgin very gifted in
painting. She herself honored art with her achievements, which came effortlessly.
Comparing her to a silver lamp that never burns out, the author, with a sense of
optimism, concluded that Caterina would live forever and her name would bear
eternal light and splendor

An OLET is a device with a two-fold functionality since it behaves as a thin-film transistor and at the same time can generate light under appropriate bias conditions. This Review focuses mainly on one of the building blocks of such device, namely the gate dielectrics, and how it is possible to engineer it to improve device properties and performances. While many findings on gate dielectrics can be easily applied to organic light emitting transistors, we here concentrate on how this layer can be exploited and engineered as an active tool for light manipulation in this novel class of optoelectronic devices.Peer reviewe
Ab-initio investigation of unexpected aspects of hydroxylation of diketopiperazines by reaction with dioxiranes
In an explorative study of the opportunities for synthesis provided by oxidation of natural aminoacidic compound with methyl-(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane, we noticed that oxidation of the cyclic compound, when successful, leads to the ?-hydroxy compound, notwithstanding the presence of the isopropyl groups that are usually easy targets for this reaction, as verified with the homologous acyclic compound. We therefore initiated an ab-initio study of the reactions aimed at determining the role of the ring and explaining the reactivity differences of the cis and trans configurations. Consistently with recent literature, we confirm the fundamental role of an adduct configuration in which the dioxirane O-O bond is largely divaricated and electron pairing is broken, often denoted in the literature as diradicaloid

Aqueous choline acetate as reaction medium for the oxidation of kraft lignin with hydrogen peroxide
Recently, choline-based ionic liquids (ILs), a class of biocompatible ILs, have been successfully employed in the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Nevertheless, their potential as solvents alternative to the more popular yet unfriendly imidazolium ILs in the oxidative depolymerization of lignin appears only marginally explored. In this study, aqueous cholinium acetate, [Ch][AcO], a readily available IL, was used as the reaction solvent for the oxidative depolymerization of Kraft lignin (KL) with H2O2/MoO3. Experimental optimization design was helpful to estimate optimal reaction parameters. Under reasonably mild conditions (H2O2 to KL weight ratio 0.33, 9.2% MoO3, 8% NaOH, 77 °C, 5 h), KL could be converted to 37% of depolymerization oil (KL_Oil), containing nearly 2.5% of aromatic monomers (ArMo), of which vanillin is the most abundant (up to 67%, yield 1.64%), and to 55% of oxidized lignin (OKL) solid fraction. When increasing H2O2/KL up to 1, ArMo yield decreased in favor of aliphatic acids (mainly, malonic acid), originating from ArMo over-oxidation, while OKL fraction enriched with carbonyl functional groups. Interestingly, in the absence of [Ch][AcO], lower ArMo yields (ArMo 1.68%) were observed, with vanillin selectivity dropping to 36% (yield 0.60%), hinting a possible stabilizing effect of the IL on reactive depolymerization intermediates and products. [Ch][AcO] could be regenerated, with <3% mass loss and unaltered chemical structure, and recycled without significant changes in product yields
