Detours on the phloem sugar highway: stem carbon storage and remobilization
For trees to survive, they must allocate resources between sources and sinks to maintain proper function. The vertical transport pathway in tree stems is essential for carbohydrates and other solutes to move between the canopy and the root system. To date, research and models emphasize the role of tree stems as ‘express’ sugar highways. However, recent investigations using isotopic markers suggest that there is considerable storage and exchange of phloem-transported sugars with older carbon (C) reserves within the stem. Thus, we suggest that stems play an important role not only in long-distance transport, but also in the regulation of the tree's overall C balance. A quantitative partitioning of stem C inputs among storage and sinks, including tissue growth, respiration, and export to roots, is still lacking. Combining methods to better quantify the dynamics and controls of C storage and remobilization in the stem will help to resolve central questions of allocation and C balance in trees

The dissertation “Arrows and Hammers: Marx and Engels as Readers of Lewis Morgan” is an investigation based on an immanent analysis that aims to apprehend the nexus of three works that compose the “plot” that motivated this work: the classic Ancient Society, the American Lewis Morgan, who consecrated his name as one of the most important anthropologists of the nineteenth century; the so-called Karl Marx Ethnological Notebooks, which form a set of drafts that the author developed in the final years of his life, among them, of the aforementioned work of Morgan; and Friedrich Engels's Origin of the Family, Private Property, and State, a work that he developed both from Marx's drafts and from the original work of Morgan. Marx died shortly after having drafted Morgan's work. His death would have interrupted, according to Engels, the author's plans to expose the discoveries and novelties introduced by Morgan about the earliest social forms that preceded the capitalist mode of production. Thus, the publication of The Origin by Engels would have been, according to its author, "the execution of a will". With the publication of these Marx Papers in 1972, that is, almost 100 years after the plot that articulated these three authors (between 1877 and 1884), we finally have elements to compare the specificities between the readings that Marx and Engels made of Lewis Morgan, identifying possible similarities and highlighting the visible differences. In broad strokes, this enterprise was what motivated the production of this dissertation.A dissertação “Flechas e Martelos: Marx e Engels como leitores de Lewis Morgan” é uma investigação baseada numa análise imanentes que tem como objetivo apreender os nexos de três obras que compõem a “trama” que motivou esse trabalho: a clássica Ancient Society, do americano Lewis Morgan, que consagrou seu nome como um dos mais importantes antropólogos do século XIX; os assim chamados Cadernos Etnológicos de Karl Marx, que formam um conjunto de rascunhos que esse autor desenvolveu nos anos finais da sua vida, dentre eles, da supracitada obra de Morgan; e A origem da família, da propriedade privada e do Estado, de Friedrich Engels, obra que esse autor desenvolveu tanto a partir dos rascunhos de Marx quanto cotejando a obra original de Morgan. Marx faleceu pouco tempo após ter rascunhado a obra de Morgan. Sua morte teria interrompido, segundo Engels, os planos do autor de expor as descobertas e novidades introduzidas por Morgan acerca das mais antigas formas sociais que precederam o modo de produção capitalista. Assim, a publicação de A origem por Engels teria sido, segundo seu autor, “a execução de um testamento”. In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)
Joey Morgan : The Man Who Waits and Sleeps While I Dream
In this artist’s book to accompany Morgan’s installation “The Man Who Waits and Sleeps While I Dream,” Randolph’s text (informed by psychoanalytic theory) situates the artist’s work within the context of the “Elizabethan Post-Modern.” The author compares the role of poetry in the Elizabethan era with the role of science and technology in postmodernism, while placing emphasis on the concept of sleep. Includes transcriptions of Morgan’s dreams, textual elements from the installation and the lyrics of M. Willson’s song “Goodnight, My Someone.” 17 bibl. ref
The visceral screen: Between the cinemas of John Cassavetes and David Cronenberg, a Barthesian perspective
The thesis discusses two directors who are never considered together in academic discourse. Cassavetes’ perceived focus on events led by the dynamics of performance and his looseness of technique opposes the calculated compositions of the Cronenberg film, with its aesthetic of horrific images and its gallery of emotionally detached protagonists. Yet it is between such opposing methods of cinematic expression that the ineffable qualities of film aesthetics can be discovered. Cassavetes’ cinema achieves this by revelling in a surplus of activity that exceeds narrative, while the indescribable characteristics of the Cronenberg oeuvre is achieved through a systematic emptying of the image’s meaning through a simultaneous commitment to paring back emotion and portraying of images that are controversial and inconceivable. Taken together, the thesis identifies these aspects of film as ‘the visceral,’ a facet of the moving image that most certainly exists, but is resolutely, and disturbingly resistant to interpretation.
Roland Barthes’ writings are integral to a theory of the visceral. His re-evaluation of Saussurean semiology as a method of analyzing and undoing ideologically-imposed meanings informs readings of sequences from Cassavetes and Cronenberg’s films. Following Barthes, the thesis suggests that the existence of the visceral is realized as a resistance to ideological interpretations of the image, and so cannot be described. Ultimately, the inability of semiology to fully grasp certain aspects of the filmed image is put forward as a rejoinder to theories of the fiction film as principally a narrative medium

The ECUAD DONOR MAP series is a zine and two posters connecting some of the biggest donors for our new campus to local gentrification and other Place-based violence. The series is by Mickey Vescera and Mickey Morgan for FALL 2020 SOCS-302 Ethics of Representation. Some questions we contemplated in the construction of these maps, and throughout our scholarship at Emily Carr University of Art + Design: How did we get here in this shiny new campus “owning” the Land? Who are our donors that paid for this? Where do we find them in our school and in our neighbourhoods? How much of the “property” in East Van do they own? What other capital investments do they hold? Who does our being here serve? And ultimately, how can we disrupt this built-in power imbalance to be better neighbours?

En este presente breve ensayo, se esbozan las principales ideas de la obra “Ancient Society”, publicada en 1871, del antropólogo Henry Lewis Morgan (1818-1881). Morgan es considerado uno de los primeros antropólogos en Estados Unidos y enmarcado en la escuela del evolucionismo clásico siendo contemporáneo de otros evolucionistas como Tylor. El autor representa una figura clave en el “renacimiento” de ideas evolucionistas a partir de los años treinta del siglo XX y para influir en la inspiración de la ecología cultural, el materialismo cultural y la antropología del parentesco a partir de la mitad del siglo XX.In this present brief essay, I describe the main ideas of the work "Ancient Society", published in 1871, by the anthropologist Henry Lewis Morgan (1818-1881). Morgan is one of the first anthropologists in the United States. Henry Lewis Morgan is framed in classical evolutionism school and he is contemporary of other evolutionists like Tylor. The author represents a key figure in the "renaissance" of evolutionary ideas from the thirties of the twentieth century to be inspiration of cultural ecology, cultural materialism and the anthropology of kinship from the mid-twentieth century.Neste breve ensaio eu escrevo as principais idéias da obra "Ancient Society", publicada em 1871, pelo antropólogo Henry Lewis Morgan (1818-1881).
