Two Variables of Tanka Strips by Tomei Hitomi: Their Images, Reprints, and a Commentary
Abstract Two extant long strips of paper, A and B, each of which bear a similar tanka poem by Tomei Hitomi(who founded Showa Women's University in 1920), are introduced. Research into the poet's background, analogous expressions found in his other works published during the Meiji and Taisho Periods, handwriting analyses of the two strips, and the name of a lecture course stamped on the reverse side of strip A, reveal that the verse written on strip A was created in 1916. The author notes a vital distinction between the two verses. In A, Hitomi uses ware-wa(I myself). He uses kokoro(mind)in B. The author surmises that the "kokoro" version was written a few years later than "ware-wa" version, and speculates that the poet's initial exuberant spirit has calmed down, and that in shifting to kokoro he is emphasizing the loneliness he then felt.7KJ00009460439departmental bulletin pape
HitoMi-Cam: A Shape-Agnostic Person Detection Method Using the Spectral Characteristics of Clothing
While convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection is widely used, it exhibits a shape dependency that degrades performance for postures not included in the training data. Building upon our previous simulation study published in this journal, this study implements and evaluates the spectral-based approach on physical hardware to address this limitation. Specifically, this paper introduces HitoMi-Cam, a lightweight and shape-agnostic person detection method that uses the spectral reflectance properties of clothing. The author implemented the system on a resource-constrained edge device without a GPU to assess its practical viability. The results indicate that a processing speed of 23.2 frames per second (fps) (253 × 190 pixels) is achievable, suggesting that the method can be used for real-time applications. In a simulated search and rescue scenario where the performance of CNNs declines, HitoMi-Cam achieved an average precision (AP) of 93.5%, surpassing that of the compared CNN models (best AP of 53.8%). Throughout all evaluation scenarios, the occurrence of false positives remained minimal. This study positions the HitoMi-Cam method not as a replacement for CNN-based detectors but as a complementary tool under specific conditions. The results indicate that spectral-based person detection can be a viable option for real-time operation on edge devices in real-world environments where shapes are unpredictable, such as disaster rescue
Transcriptional regulatory regions for expression of the rat fatty acid synthase
AbstractWe previously mapped the sequences responsive to insulin/glucose stimulation and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) suppression in proximal promoter region from −57 to −35 of fatty acid synthase (FAS) gene of rat liver [Fukuda et al. (1996) Biochem. Mol. Biol. Int. 38, 987–996]. When two copies of the sequences spanning −57 to −35 were linked to a reporter gene containing heterologous promoter and were used for transfection, the reporter activity significantly increased in response to insulin/glucose treatment in hepetocytes. This increase was inhibited by addition of PUFA. Gel mobility shift assays using the sequence from −57 to −35 as a probe revealed nuclear factor(s) from rat liver that specifically complexed with the sequences. In addition, by antibody supershift assays, we have detected the binding of the transcriptional factor Sp1 at the GC-rich region located within −57 to −35 of the FAS promoter. Cotransfection studies in rat hepatocytes, with the Sp1 expression vector and FAScat constructs, showed the inactivation of the promoter. These results were similar to those for the region from −68 to −52 of FAS gene (an insulin response element). The region from −68 to −52 of FAS gene competed for the formation of DNA–protein complexes to the region from −57 to −35 in the gel shift assay. Mutational analysis showed that the overlapping region of these two sequences was essential for the binding of Sp1. It has been demonstrated that both the regions from −57 to −35 and from −68 to −52 of the FAS gene are responsible for regulation due to insulin/glucose and PUFA, and Sp1 may be involved in the regulation
Security Analysis of two Distance-Bounding Protocols
In this paper, we analyze the security of two recently proposed distance bounding protocols called the “Hitomi” and the “NUS” protocols. Our results show that the claimed security of both protocols has been overestimated. Namely, we show that the Hitomi protocol is susceptible to a full secret key disclosure attack which not only results in violating the privacy of the protocol but also can be exploited for further attacks such as impersonation, mafia fraud and terrorist fraud attacks. Our results also demonstrates that the probability of success in a distance fraud attack against the NUS protocol can be increased up to (34 )n and even slightly more, if the adversary is furnished with some computational capabilities
Transcriptional regulation of leptin gene promoter in rat
AbstractTo investigate the DNA regulatory sequences required for stimulation and suppression of leptin gene expression, primary cultured hepatocytes and adipocytes of rats were transfected with plasmids containing the 5′-flanking sequences of the rat leptin gene fused to the luciferase gene. When two copies of the sequences spanning nucleotides −101 to −83 of the leptin promoter were used for transfection, the reporter activity significantly increased in the presence of glucose/insulin in comparison with glucose alone. The glucose/insulin stimulation of the transcription was inhibited by addition of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These results were similar to those found earlier for the transcription of the fatty acid synthase, FAS(−57/−35) and ATP citrate-lyase, ACL(−64/−41) genes. Cotransfection studies in the cells with a Sp1 expression vector and leptin (−101/−83) constructs showed the inactivation of the leptin promoter by Sp1. Gel mobility shift assays using an end-labeled leptin(−101/−83) construct as a probe revealed that nuclear factor(s) from rat liver or adipose tissue specifically formed complexes with the sequence. The DNA-protein complexes were common to the glucose/insulin-responsive regions of the leptin, ACL and FAS genes, suggesting that these genes are coordinately regulated. In addition, by antibody supershift assays, the transcription factor Sp1 was found to bind the GC-rich region located between nucleotides −101 and −83 of the leptin gene. Mutational analysis of this region showed that the sequence of the region was critical for glucose/insulin stimulation of transcription. Thus, we postulated that the region from −101 to −83 of the leptin gene is responsible for glucose/insulin stimulation of transcription, and that Sp1 is somehow involved in this regulation
