    No full text
Dr. John M. Howland, a friend of Frye\u27s, is moving to the western country and will probably stay for a short time in Cincinnati. Frye says Howland has been a physician for some time in Baltimore and everyone hates to see him go. Zebulon Weaver (1872-1948) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from western North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina Park Commission and was involved in the land acquisition process that went towards establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. In this letter to Weaver, Frye and Jones ask Weaver if a compromise could be reached regarding the Park’s case with Mr. Smathers thereby preventing it from having to be taken to Judge Carter.A. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

This article deals with the axial lines that support Northrop Frye’s Western literature historical view. In this sense, the seminal influence of the Bible’s typological interpretation is taken into consideration. According to Frye, the Scriptures can be considered as a model for reading and studying literature. On the other hand, it is our intention to examine Frye’s critical writing from a Cultural-rhetoric approach in the terms proposed by Tomás Albaladejo. This approach permits a fruitful rereading of his polemical view of literature as “a science as well as an art.” Finally, we have paid heed to the rhetorical device of the metaphor and its presence in Northrop Frye’s literary criticism, also taking into account Tomás Albaladejo’s notion of the metaphorical engine.RESUMO: Neste trabalho, em primeiro lugar, abordam-se as linhas gerais que fundamentam a conceção da história da literatura ocidental e que estão subjacentes à teoria literária de Northrop Frye.

Seattle's economy boomed in the years following 1900. In 1911, local businessman George Frye completed the Frye Hotel to cater to businessmen and other visitors who sometimes stayed for extended periods of time. The building is located on Yesler Way at Third Avenue South in the heart of the downtown area. It was converted to low-income housing in the early 1970s. This photo, taken around 1926, shows the Frye Hotel with its large lighted sign. Automobiles crowd the parking areas.1 nitrate negative: b&w; 8 x 10 in

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
