    Geometric Multicut

    We study the following separation problem: Given a collection of colored objects in the plane, compute a shortest “fence” F, i.e., a union of curves of minimum total length, that separates every two objects of different colors. Two objects are separated if F contains a simple closed curve that has one object in the interior and the other in the exterior. We refer to the problem as GEOMETRIC k-CUT, where k is the number of different colors, as it can be seen as a geometric analogue to the well-studied multicut problem on graphs. We first give an O(n4log3n)-time algorithm that computes an optimal fence for the case where the input consists of polygons of two colors and n corners in total. We then show that the problem is NP-hard for the case of three colors. Finally, we give a (2−4/3k)-approximation algorithm

    We provide a new perspective on the problem how high-level state machine models with abstract actions can be related to low-level models in which these actions are refined by sequences of concrete actions. We describe the connection between high-level and low-level actions using action codes, a variation of the prefix codes known from coding theory. For each action code ℛ, we introduce a contraction operator α_ℛ that turns a low-level model ℳ into a high-level model, and a refinement operator ϱ_ℛ that transforms a high-level model into a low-level model. We establish a Galois connection ϱ_ℛ() ⊑ ℳ ⇔ ⊑ α_ℛ(ℳ), where ⊑ is the well-known simulation preorder. For conformance, we typically want to obtain an overapproximation of model ℳ. To this end, we also introduce a concretization operator γ_ℛ, which behaves like the refinement operator but adds arbitrary behavior at intermediate points, giving us a second Galois connection α_ℛ(ℳ) ⊑ ⇔ ℳ ⊑ γ_ℛ(). Action codes may be used to construct adaptors that translate between concrete and abstract actions during learning and testing of Mealy machines. If Mealy machine ℳ models a black-box system then α_ℛ(ℳ) describes the behavior that can be observed by a learner/tester that interacts with this system via an adaptor derived from code ℛ. Whenever α_ℛ(ℳ) implements (or conforms to) , we may conclude that ℳ implements (or conforms to) γ_ℛ (). Almost all results, examples, and counter-examples are formalized in Coq

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Due to the rapid development of processor and circuit technology, such systems are becoming more and more common in all application domains, ranging from avionics and process control to robotics and consumer electronics. The specification, design and analysis of hybrid systems require a synthesis of ideas, concepts, mathematical theories and tools that are currently spread over distinct disciplines, most notably Computer Science and Control Theory. The interest in the formal treatment of digital systems that interact with an analog environment is certainly not new, but received a new impetus by the extension of formal models from Computer Science with real-time around 1991 and by the explosion of embedded applications of computer technology within our society.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
