R U Up for the Challenge? A Partnership to Measure Library Impact on Student Learning: Rutgers University Libraries & Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Degree Achievement Program
No full textRutgers University Libraries seek to support the goal of the Rutgers University Mission Assessment and Alignment Planning system (MAAP) which is "to clarify the contributions of various programs and units to the fulfillment of the Rutgers-New Brunswick undergraduate educational experience mission/goals, and to facilitate and encourage assessment and alignment of outcomes and progress toward those goals." Toward this end, the Libraries have focused on measuring the impact of its instruction program via the McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program (MPBAP). This prestigious program provides a unique opportunity to track cohorts of students over 10 years. The goal is to have these students enroll in doctoral programs. We are seeking to find out: Do students in the Bibliography & Research Techniques library class in the Summer Research Institute of the MPBAP retain and transfer information literacy skills to other courses and academic research as they persist in the MPBAP program? In addition to the assessment instruments already in use by the McNair department, (Graduate Student Profile Progress Report) for long term impact, other instruments are being used by the Libraries: pre-post tests and surveys. This poster will present the assessment methods in place as we begin to track our first cohort (Summer 2015).This project is part of the program “Assessment in Action: Academic Libraries and Student Success” which is undertaken by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in partnership with the Association for Institutional Research and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Diasporas and democratization in the post-communist world
No full textIf diaspora communities are socialized with democratic values in Western societies, they could be expected to be sympathetic to the democratization of their home countries. However, there is a high degree of variation in their behavior. Contrary to the predominant understanding in the literature that diasporas act in exclusively nationalist ways, this article argues that they do engage with the democratization of their home countries. Various challenges to the sovereignty of their homelands explain whether diasporas involve with procedural or liberal aspects of democratization. Drawing evidence from the activities of the Ukrainian, Serbian, Albanian and Armenian diasporas after the end of communism, I argue that unless diasporas are linked to home countries that enjoy both international legal and domestic sovereignty, they will involve only with procedural aspects of democratization. Diasporas filter international pressure to democratize post-communist societies by utilizing democratic procedures to advance unresolved nationalist goals

No full textIn this paper we present new tools for user interaction with virtual worlds, to bring more natural behavior into the manipulation of objects in virtual environments. We present some principles of physically realistic behavior of virtual objects and a set of user input techniques suitable for semi-immersive VR devices such as the Responsive Workbench. We introduce springs, spring-forks and spring-probes as new tools for assisting direct manipulation of objects in VEs. Behavioural and physiological responses of sheep to 16 h transport and a novel environment post-transport
No full textThe effect of a novel lairage environment on the ability of sheep to recover from 16 h of transport was investigated. Sheep were transported from grass paddocks to either novel outside paddocks or inside pens, and housed groups were transported to either familiar or novel inside pens. During transport, sheep from outside paddocks lay down less than those from inside pens. In sheep transported to inside pens, those from outside paddocks spent more time lying and spent less time eating; hay and water intakes during the first 12 h post-transport were lower than those previously kept inside. Geometric Methods for Vortex Extraction
No full textThis paper presents two vortex detection methods which are based on the geometric properties of streamlines. Unlike traditional vortex detection methods, which are based on point-samples of physical quantities, one of our methods is also effective in detecting weak vortices. In addition, it allows for quantitative feature extraction by calculating numerical attributes of vortices. Accordingly, the private sector is a powerful tool that can be utilized during post-conflict reconstruction to enable sustain- able peace and economic development. After a conflict, in an effort to establish a means of survival outside of the war economy, there is a pressing need for the population to have a means by which to provide a livelihood and productively contribute to society. h-index and Author Impact Factor of Neurosurgical Researchers
No full textThe dataset provides the h-index and Author Impact Factor (AIF) from 2015-2019 and 5-Year (AIF) of 300 neurosurgical authors. The h-index was retrieved from Scopus in September 2020. The data required to calculate the AIF was retrieved from Scopus from September 2020 to April 2021. There are three groups of neurosurgical authors: (1) the 100 authors with the greatest number of articles of all time within general neurosurgical journals (“Experienced”); (2) the 100 authors with the greatest number of articles during the 2015-2019 period within general neurosurgical journals (“Trending ”); and (3) the 100 Post Graduation Year 7 (PGY 7) neurosurgical residents with the highest h-index (“Amateur”). Author's names were replaced by numbers. Forty-one authors belong to both Experienced and Trending Groups, having their identification number duplicated
