Delaying transition to turbulence by a passive mechanism

No full text
International audienceReducing skin friction is important in nature and in many technological applications. This reduction may be achieved by reducing stresses in turbulent boundary layers, for instance tailoring biomimetic rough skins. Here we take a second approach consisting of keeping the boundary layer laminar as long as possible by forcing small optimal perturbations. Because of the highly non-normal nature of the underlying linearized operator, these perturbations are highly amplified and able to modify the mean velocity profiles at leading order. We report results of wind-tunnel experiments in which we implement this concept by using suitably designed roughness elements placed on the skin to enforce nearly optimal perturbations. We show that by using this passive control technique it is possible to sensibly delay transition to turbulence. © 2006 The American Physical Society

STABILIZATION OF TOLLMIEN-SCHLICHTING WAVES BY MEANS OF ROUGHNESS GENERATED STREAKS

No full text
The stabilization of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves in a spanwise modulated Blasius boundary layer has been experimentally verified in the MTL wind tunnel at KTH. The alternating high and low speed streaks were created by regularly spaced cylindrical roughness elements mounted near the leading edge of the flat plate. It is shown that the larger the streak amplitude is the larger is the damping effect of the TS-waves, which is in agreement with recent theoretical works

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the non-modal growth of steady streaks in a flat plate boundary layer

No full text
An experimental and theoretical investigation aimed at describing the non-modal growth of steady and spanwise periodic streamwise streaks in a flat plate boundary layer is presented. Stable laminar streaks are experimentally generated by means of a spanwise periodic array of small cylindrical roughness elements fixed on the plate. The streamwise evolution of the streaks is measured and it is proved that, except in a small region near the roughness elements, they obey the boundary layer scalings. The maximum achievable amplitude is mainly determined by the relative height of the roughness elements. Results are compared with numerical simulations of optimal and suboptimal boundary layer streaks. The theory is able to elucidate some of the discrepancies recently noticed between experimentally realizable non-modal growth and optimal perturbation theory. The key factor is found to be the wall normal location and the extension of the laminar standing streamwise vortices inducing the streaks. The differences among previous experimental works can be explained by different dominating streak generation mechanisms which can be linked to the geometry and to the ratio between the roughness height and the boundary layer scale

FAKTORER HOS SJUKSKÖTERSKAN SOM PÅVERKAR PATIENTENS FÖRTROENDE OCH TRYGGHETSKÄNSLA En intervjustudie Caroline Fransson Sara Persson Fransson, C & Persson, S. Faktorer hos sjuksköterskan som påverkar patientens förtroende och trygghetskänsla. En intervjustudie. Examensarbete i omvårdnad 10 poäng. Nyckelord: bemötande, förtroende, personlig stil, sjuksköterska, trygghetFACTORS IN NURSES THAT INFLUENCE THE PATIENTS TRUST AND FEELING OF SECURITY An interview study Caroline Fransson Sara Persson Fransson, C & Persson, S. Factors in nurses that influence the patients trust and feeling of security. An interview study. Degree project, 10 Credit Points. Nursing Program, Malmö University: Health and Society, Department of Nursing, 2005. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to shed light on what factors (internal and external) the nurse has that influence the patients trust and feeling of security while in their care. The Posed Questions: What can the nurse do to gain the patients trust and feeling of security? In what ways are trust and feeling of security affected by the nurse’s personal approach? Does the nurse’s personal appearance and style have any significant influence on the patient? In this study, the authors exemplify external factors as jewellery, make-up, hair style and tattoos. The internal factors are referring to the nurse’s behaviour towards the patient. Method: The study is an empirical qualitative interview study that was conducted with six inpatients above the age of 60. The material was processed and analysed through categorisation. Results: The findings showed that the patients trust and feelings of security are largely of both by the nurse’s internal and external factors. The main influences on the patient’s trust and feeling of security are the internal factors, such as personal approach by the nurse. Keywords: feeling of security, nurse, personal approach, personal style, trus

Teacher registration, the state and the teacher : Analyses of changing roles, relations, identities and positions

Registration for teachers is to be introduced in Sweden July 1 2012 (SOU 2008:52). The reform includes: that newly qualified teachers must do a "probationary year” and be supported by a mentor. During this year the school leader are responsible for assessing whether the teacher is to be recommended being registered or not. The assessment is performed in relation to national standards developed by the Swedish National Agency for Education. The Teachers' Responsibility Board will be a new institution having the right to withdraw a teacher’s registration or to issue warnings. This reform changes a number of relational positions between teachers and a number of actors. For instance, the relationship between the new teachers and the mentors is changing as the mentor can become involved in the formal assessment of the new teacher, a role mentors traditionally not has had neither in Sweden nor in other Nordic countries (Fransson, 2010; Fransson & Gustafsson, 2008). The relationship between teachers and parents are also change when parents are given the opportunity to formally report and question the teacher's registration, which can render the suspension of the registration or a warning. This could put teachers under pressure both to work harder and more in accordance with parents’ expectations, but also to protect him/herself, eg. a more extensive focus on documenting the educational activities to have the back free and also to adopt a more risk-free behavior (cf. Lindqvist & Nordänger, 2007). This way the reform can be a "tool” to discipline teachers and making them act within regimes of accountability and governmentality (cf. Devos, 2010). Such strategies appear in interviews with teachers who have been working for two years and were told to reflect over the hypothetical situation if it had existed a system with teacher registration, probation year and assessment when during their first year (Aspfors, Fransson & Heikkinen, forthcoming). The reform also implies that that ‘new teachers’ not any more will be regarded as fully qualified (albeit not yet very experienced) until they have reached the required standard and fulfilled the requirements of the probationary year. Thus, they are to be recognized as someone in-between a student teacher and a fully competent and qualified teacher and colleague, making “new teachers” being conceptualized and re-constructed in quite a different, changing identities, roles, relations and positions. In this paper this is discussed in relation to neo-liberal regimes of governance, accountability and governmentality. Key words: Dilemmatic space, mentor, newly qualified teachers, positioning , teacher registration. Referenser:Aspfors, J., Fransson, G. & Heikkinen, H.L.T. Transition to turbulence delay by means of a passive mechanism

No full text
An experimental activity aimed at the development of a passive method for delaying the laminar-turbulent transition of the boundary layer on an aerodynamic body is presented. The research is motivated by a simplified linearized theoretical analysis where it was demonstrated that stable streaks in a boundary layer are capable to stabilize the growth of Tollmien-Schlichting waves. In this paper the results of a series of experiments, performed on a flat plate, aimed at proving the feasibility of this concept are presented. Firstly, it is shown that by means of suitable roughness elements it is possible to generate stable steady streaks of amplitudes up to 12% of the free stream velocity. Secondly, it is demonstrated that the generated streaks are really effective in reducing the growth of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves as predicted by the theory. Finally, it is shown that using this passive control technique it is possible to sensibly delay transition to turbulence

Roughness: a new passive mechanism to delay transition to turbulence on boundary layers

No full text
In this paper the results of a large experimental activity aimed at the development of a passive method for delaying the laminar-turbulent transition of the boundary layer on an aerodynamic body are presented. The research was at the beginning motivated by a simplified linearized theoretical analysis where it was demonstrated that the presence of stable streaks in a zero pressure gradient boundary layer are capable to stabilize the growth of Tollmien-Schlichting waves. To prove the feasibility of the concept the following activities are presented. First of all it will be shown that by means of cylindrical roughness elements it is possible to generate stable steady streaks of amplitudes up to 12% of the free stream velocity. In a second part it will be demonstrated that the generated streaks are really effective in reducing the growth of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves as predicted by the theory. Finally, it is shown that using this passive control technique it is possible to sensibly delay transition to turbulence. A further possible development will be presented in the conclusions
