Break-even analysis for a green crab fishery in PEI, Canada

    No full text
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Canada is experimenting with a commercial fishery on the European green crab (Carcinus maenas), an invasive species in North America, to help reduce the negative impact this animal has on ecosystems and native shellfish populations. We determined the break-even price that fishers would require for green crabs under different fishing scenarios (i.e. different gear and catch per trap per day). We also determined, for a 21 day season, the minimum catch per trap per day for fishermen to break even at market prices of 0.50/lb,0.50/lb,1/lb, and $3.50/lb. Several scenarios were profitable, but our results suggest the price of crab (dockside) would have to be sufficiently high to motivate fishers to continue the fishing pressure needed to reduce populations of this invasive species. The most economically profitable scenario was a fyke net by-catch fishery, similar to what currently exists on Prince Edward Island during the eel fishing season

The master thesis is about property acquisition of farm properties that took place around Oslo (then Aker municipality) for urban and transport system developments in the interwar and post-war period. The purpose of the thesis is to fill in a “gap” in knowledge about how the City of Oslo secured necessary development areas by using various legal and political mechanisms. The main research question of the thesis is: To describe the processes in Oslo municipality's land acquisition of Lambertseter farm in 1929 and Nedre Fossum farm in 1965 and discuss differences with regard to legal tools and valuation. In addition to 3 research questions: * Which actors were behind the decisions on suburban development, and how did their political and professional interests influence the way the acquisitions were carried out? * What legal and political mechanisms were used to acquire necessary land for the suburban development, and how did these processes affect the landowners? * How were property valuation and compensation levels set in connection with property acquisition and infrastructure development? To answer the main research question and research questions, document studies, of the cases of Lambertseter farm in 1959 and Fossum farm in 1965 have been conducted, theory of institutional structures and legal principles have been used to discuss the findings and the processes of property acquisition and compensation assessment. While Lambertseter was bought without a clear development plan and was more spontaneous, the acquisition of Fossum was based on concrete goals for housing development. Here expropriation was used. The valuation of Lambertseter was based on the property's use for agriculture and forestry, although there were clear signs that the area could be developed privately in some form later. At the same time, the absence of technical infrastructure, such as water and sewage systems, was used as an argument by the municipality to keep the purchase price low. These arguments were also used in court regarding the assessment of damages to Fossum (Østre Aker). Even though a different legal mechanism used for the acquisition was different, these arguments were also used in the court regarding property valuation and compensation of Nedre Fossum (Østre Aker)

Big Data, Big Libraries, Big Problems?: the 2014 LibTech Anti-talk?

The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in general and “Big data” in particular. Along with those who wield them, these can be seen as functioning together as a “mechanical muse” of sorts – surprisingly alluring – and, like a physical automaton can serve as a symbol – a microcosm – of what the MSTM sees (at the very least in practice) as the cosmic machine, our “final frontier”. And yet, individuals who unreflectively participate in these things – giving themselves over to them and seeking the powers afforded by the technology apart from technology’s rightful purposes – in fact yield to the same pragmatism and reductionism those wielding them are captive to. Thus, they ultimately nullify themselves philosophically, politically, and economically – their value increasingly being only the data concerning their persons, and its perceived usefulness. Likewise libraries, the time-honored place of, and symbol for, the intellectual flowering of the individual, will, insofar as they spurn the classical liberal arts (with the idea that things are intrinsically good, and in the case of humans, special as well) in favor of the alluring embrace of MSTM-driven “information technology” and Big data - unwittingly contribute to their irrelevance and demise as they find themselves increasingly less needed, valued, wanted. Likewise for the liberal arts as a whole, and in fact history itself, if the acid of a “science” untethered from what is, in fact, good (intrinsically), continues to gain strengt

    No full text

Practices of Inter-Parliamentary Coordination in International politics. The European Union and Beyond.

    No full text
Parliaments risk becoming the main losers of internationalisation; a process that privileges executives and experts. Still, parliamentarians have developed a range of responses to catch up with international decision-making: they coordinate their actions with other parliamentarians; engage in international parliamentary forums; and some even opt to pursue political careers at the supranational level, such as in the European Parliament. This volume provides a thorough empirical examination of how an internationalising context drives parliamentarians to engage in inter-parliamentary coordination; how it affects their power positions vis-à-vis executive actors; among themselves; and in society in general. Furthermore, building upon these empirical insights, the book assesses whether parliamentary democracy can remain sustainable under these changing conditions. Indeed, if parliaments are, and remain, central to our understanding of modern democracy, it is of crucial importance to track their responses to internationalisation, the fragmentation of political sovereignty, and the proliferation of multilevel politics
