This work intends to verify the form in which violence is present in the Brazilian literature of the 1990´s, aiming to understand the social meaning of this violence, step required to also understand the relation between the literary form grounded on violence and the social formation of contemporary Brazil. We proceed to analyze the Rubem Fonseca´s Agosto novel trying to understand its meaning as an historic novel written during the 90´s, a decade where it was bound to finish the national aspirations so the 50´s, the narrated period. Equally immersed in the violence theme and revealing the fragmentary characteristics of the 90´s, we have Paulo Lins´s novel Cidade de Deus, which, as an ethnographic novel, intend to give voice to a population usually silenced and victim of a process of violent modernization and lack of perspectives in the 90´s. Facing questions about violence in literature and violence in our own society, in its daily interpersonal display, the study of these novels are important for the comprehension of not only the paths of our literature, in terms of a literary tradition, but also the way in which its structure can help us understand the dynamics of our own society in the 90´s

Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.

IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells

The Integration of European Stock Markets and Market Timing

    No full text
In this research, a European index and a world index were used to test the integration of the national stock markets of fourteen EU countries into the world stock market. A market timing procedure was used to detect differences of performance between the national indexes. The main conclusions drawn are that the European factor is important in explaining the returns of all the national indexes, but the world portfolio seems unnecessary in the cases of nine countries whose stock markets are embedded in the global European stock market. Differences of performance were also detected: the market timing effect being particularly evident in relation to the European market portfolio. Non-participation in the single currency does not seem to have a perceptible influence on the results.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

In view of the development in information technology and the Internet, we increasingly hear about digital marketing and its importance of business world nowadays. It involves having a website as a means of information with implications on the customer relations and online storing. It has become a strategic component of any company. Nowadays, the evaluation of quality of sites is a topic of discussion and research around the world. My research aims to assess the quality of two sites - José Maria da Fonseca and Bacalhôa - through a WebQual model in order to determine the one with the best levels of utility, showing the best rates of ease of use, entertainment and complementary relationship. The research is a descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional study. The model used is WebQual and consists of four constructs and twelve dimensions. This research used a survey as a research method in order to collect answers of respondents. This questionnaire was adapted from another used in a study produced by Wilker Gomes Fox, Rita de Faria Pereira and Jozemar Pereira dos Santos. SPSS was used for the analysis of the data collected. My analysis included calculating reliability using Cronbach's alpha, descriptive statistics and t-student test for paired samples in order to compare the two results of each of the sites. My analysis showed that the site José Maria da Fonseca showed better results than that of Bacalhôa. I concluded that José Maria da Fonseca shows better usefulness, ease of use, entertainment and complementary relationship
