Author interview: Q and A with Dr Kari Nixon on kept from all contagion: germ theory, disease and the dilemma of human contact in late nineteenth-century literature

    No full text
In this author interview, we speak to Dr Kari Nixon about her new book Kept From All Contagion: Germ Theory, Disease and the Dilemma of Human Contact in Late Nineteenth-Century Literature. She discusses why the growing public awareness of germ theory between 1870 and 1900 makes for a fruitful period of study, how ‘Biopolitical Resistance Literature’ in the period responded to some of the anxieties that emerged, how these literary works might help us think about the challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the value of the humanities for examining the implications of contagion and disease

Literary Studies : The Author Cat - Clemens's Life in Fiction

    No full text
A review of The Author Cat: Clemens's Life in Fiction by Forrest G. Robinson (Fordham UP, 2007).\ud \ud Even at its most basic, guilt forms a counterweight to the hesitancy and unpleasantness of authorship, forcing writers back to the desk when they have come to despise their work. Guilt as task-master is familiar to most, even those to whom more elevated feelings, such as inspiration, make occasional visits. It seems that guilt is effective because writing is so seldom an organic or natural activity - rather, good writing emerges out of unhappy pressures that eventually overwhelm the writer's evasive strategies, from visits to the fridge door to the most sophisticated forms they take, such as when the author creates a narrative persona that claims to have owned up..

Take a journey to saga country, Reykjavik, Iceland

A travel article about a journey to Reykholt in Western Iceland, once the farm of saga author Snorri Sturluson.\ud \ud A TRIP back into snowbound Iceland's past in search of a famed warrior-poet throws up some old memories and fresh revelations for Kari Gislason \ud \ud "The fish must sing." An odd idea, I know - one uttered by a merchant in a novel by Halldor Laxness. But it said no more than what every Icelander since the settlement had known. If you were going to live on the edge of the world, it paid to do something to remind the rest of the world you were still here..

Integration of refugees in the Czech Republic

    No full text
With the number of refugees increasing worldwide, states not historically refugee destinations and refugees are placed in new roles. Questions arise about how refugees integrate into a new host society, how do identity markers and past experiences affect the integration process, and how do state’s policy choices affect integration processes? I will examine these questions, among others, through an analysis of refugee integration in the Czech Republic (a new destination country for refugees). I derived my data from twenty semi-structured interviews with refugees, institutional interviews and analysis of diverse documents. Findings show that refugees consider obtaining Czech language skills and citizenship as essential for successful integration to take place. In addition, my data shows that policy-makers are often disconnected from the policy implementation process hampering the governments’ integration efforts.Ph. Division of labour and sharing of knowledge for synchronous collaborative information retrieval

    No full text
Synchronous collaborative information retrieval (SCIR) is concerned with supporting two or more users who search together at the same time in order to satisfy a shared information need. SCIR systems represent a paradigmatic shift in the way we view information retrieval, moving from an individual to a group process and as such the development of novel IR techniques is needed to support this. In this article we present what we believe are two key concepts for the development of effective SCIR namely division of labour (DoL) and sharing of knowledge (SoK). Together these concepts enable coordinated SCIR such that redundancy across group members is reduced whilst enabling each group member to benefit from the discoveries of their collaborators. In this article we outline techniques from state-of-the-art SCIR systems which support these two concepts, primarily through the provision of awareness widgets. We then outline some of our own work into system-mediated techniques for division of labour and sharing of knowledge in SCIR. Finally we conclude with a discussion on some possible future trends for these two coordination techniques

The Christian Message in a Postmodern World: a critical re-appropriation of Hendrik Kraemer's theology of religions

    No full text
This thesis is a critical re-appropriation of Hendrik Kraemer's theology of religions. Part I introduces theology of religions through the now familiar threefold typology: Kari Earth represents 'exclusivism,' Kari Rahner, 'inclusivism,' and John Hick, 'pluralism' (Chapter 1). It then argues that the typology implicitly represents non-pluralist approaches as theologically deficient and ethically insensitive while masking problems in pluralist positions (Chapter 2). It thus releases Kraemer from the typology and from the more emotive charges directed against 'exclusivism.' Part II chronologically and thematically surveys Kraemer's theology of religions, describing his missiological and theological contexts (Chapter 3) and summarising his major works (Chapter 4). The crux of the argument comes in Part III. First, a survey of the contemporary philosophical climate is offered through a summary and critique of Jean-Frangois Lyotard's interpretation of the postmodern condition Subsequently, three theological responses are assessed with Mark C. Taylor's a/theology and John Milbank's theology presented as avoidable extremes while the work of Hans Frei and George Lindbeck is offered as a mediating position which is dubbed 'postmodern orthodoxy' (Chapter 5). Second, after reviewing key themes in Kraemer's position, theological and phenomenological criticisms are outlined and evaluated. Though they do not seriously threaten the position, these criticisms prohibit extreme interpretations of, and lead to slight modifications in, Kraemer's work (Chapter 6). Finally, when re-read through the lenses of postmodern orthodoxy, Kraemer's thought is shown to offer to contemporary theology of religions avenues of theological creativity which are nevertheless faithful to the Christian tradition (Chapter 7). The thesis concludes that Hendrik Kraemer's theology of religions is worthy of critical re- appropriation

Report, presentation and handout completed by students enrolled in OLPD 5501: Principles and Methods of Evaluation, taught by Randi Nelson in fall 2013.This project was completed as part of the 2013-2014 Resilient Communities Project (rcp.umn.edu) partnership with the City of North St. Paul. North St. Paul had a goal of becoming a “redevelopment ready” community, a designation given by the Urban Land Institute. In 2011, the city also applied for a Metropolitan Council livable cities grant. To reach these goals, project lead Paul Ammerman collaborated with students in OLPD 5501: Principles and Methods of Evaluation, taught by Randi Nelson, to evaluate the City’s redevelopment proposal. The students identified stakeholders, set the context for the evaluation, and offered an evaluation proposal. The final report, presentation, and handout are available. This project was supported by the Resilient Communities Project (RCP), a program at the University of Minnesota whose mission is to connect communities in Minnesota with U of MN faculty and students to advance community resilience through collaborative, course-based projects. RCP is a program of the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA). More information at http://www.rcp.umn.edu.Ologbosere, Itohan; Goldbeck, Briana; Zji, JingJing; Foley, Kari. (2013).
