Get PDFThe Floyd J. Smith diaries were written between 1887 and 1893, when Floyd Smith was a young man of 16 to 21 years of age. The entries are concerned primarily with his great interest in reading, music, painting, photography, and hunting. Included in the collection are two medical notebooks from the University of Maryland, where Mr. Smith was a student. Of particular interest in the diaries are the passages describing holiday activities in Grafton, West Virginia, and others. The last diary describes his first year at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore

It is believed that the collection has been compiled by the secretary of Floyd Mattice. It eventually became the property of Mattice’s granddaughter Linda M. Prall of Bloomington, Indiana. Ms. Prall presented the scrapbook to the Jerome Hall Law Library in July, 2015. Included collections are official orders; memorandums; newspaper clippings; photographs; souvenirs; maps; telegraphs; typed manuscripts; a three page handwritten Japanese character manuscript; and handwritten personal letters to Mattice

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
