Scope and Contents  
This collection contains materials belonging to William H. Berry: a letter from himself to 
Francis Crawford, a post-retirement draft of an autobiography describing his adventures 
as a missionary, and a “missionary index” providing photographs and demographical 
information of various missions throughout the world. Microfilm copy of “Confessions of 
a Missionary,” is located in MF Drawer 13.  
Biographical Summary 
William Hafford Berry was born in Magazine, Arkansas, on July 27, 1894. He was an early 
graduate of Ouachita, earning his B.A. degree from the graduating class of 1920. He 
continued his studies at the University of Chicago and the University of Missouri College 
of Journalism.  
Prior to his tenure as a full-time foreign missionary, Berry was an educator and minister. 
He and his wife, Olga, were appointed by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern

Baptist Convention in 1922 and left for Brazil the following year. The Berry family 
remained in Brazil for decades, with at least one member living there for a 70-year period.  
William H. Berry passed in Memphis, Tennessee on July 30, 1994 at age 100, having 
celebrated his 100th birthday just three days prior. At that time, he was the oldest living 
emeritus missionary of what became the International Mission Board.
