Birkhoff normalization, bifurcations of Hamiltonian systems and the Deprits formula
Get PDFWe consider Hamiltonian autonomous systems with n degrees of freedom near a singular point. In the case of absence of resonances of order less than or equal to 4 we present a direct computation of the Birkhoff normal form. In the case of two degrees of freedom, we study 1-parameter deformations of the 0: 1, 1: 1 and 2: 1 resonant singularities. The obtained results are used in a direct derivation of the Deprits formula for the isoenergetic degeneracy determinant in the restricted three-body problem. © 2013 The Author(s)
Sinfonietta for String Orchestra by Weronika Ratusińska in the Context of the Issue of (Sub)Genre

In the introduction, the author presents the definition and general characteristics, listing the sources and the most representative works in the Polish music. Additionally, she presents numerical statistics and classification of the sinfonietta in Polish music and on this basis she analyses one of the most interesting works representing the type of sinfonietta-transcription – Sinfonietta for string orchestra by Weronika Ratusińska from 2009. The author analyses the use and manner of modification of musical motifs, the way in which the sound layer is shaped and the relation between Ratusińska's work and tradition of the genre
Memoirs of Bernardine Sister Weronika Kempa from the period of World War II
No full textDuring World War II, the Bernardine Sisters from Łowicz were involved in intense charitable activities. In the September campaign during the Battle of Bzura, the Bernardine Sisters Convent was transformed into a hospital. Sisters organized beds for patients, underwear, bedding and food. They helped Polish offi cers imprisoned in Blich (the district of Łowicz) and those who waited for the deportation to Germany. They also provided assistance to the Jews from the ghetto of Łowicz. In 1944 they freed 150 children exported from Warsaw to Germany after the Warsaw Uprising and took them to the convent. There, they organized an orphanage for children who lost parents in the war. The person who was especially involved in that kind of activity was Weronika Kempa, the author of the memoirs of that time
Works for Harpsichord by Weronika Ratusińska-Zamuszko — Between the Past and the Present
No full textThe article is devoted to two works by Weronika Ratusińska-Zamuszko: the cycle Nymphs for soprano saxophone and harpsichord, and the miniature For Berenika. A miniature in the Baroque style. The introduction contains information about the composer and basic facts about the pieces in question. In the following sections of the article the author analyses: harmony (tonal arrangement and harmonic relations), form (formal models, motifs, rhythms), texture and sound as well as aesthetic aspects. Based on these elements, the key determinants of the composer's style are presented, referring to the Baroque techniques as well as those typical of the postmodern musical language, also discussing the issues of non-musical content resulting from the programme titles of the works. In the analytical part, the author presents an innovative analytical method consisting in reducing the notation of the harpsichord part to the basso continuo notation to verify the thesis that the choice of the instrument (in this case, the harpsichord) determines the style of the composition. The analytical argument leads to interesting research conclusions and is an attempt to define the composer's musical language
Identification of novel innate immune mechanisms regulating oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) progression and bacterial infection
No full textInflammation is an essential immune system response to pathogens, damaged cells and stress stimuli and has an essential role in tissue repair and regeneration. The inflammatory response is the coordinated activation of signalling pathway leading to immune cell recruitment into the site of infection and production of inflammatory mediators. In response to the recognition of microorganisms and sterile stressors, a multiprotein complex, called the inflammasome is formed. The inflammasome activates the highly pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 and induced programmed cell death-pyroptosis thus inducing inflammation. Despite the undeniable protective role of inflammation, increasing evidence shows that that deregulation in immune response or prolonged inflammation causes and advances many common diseases. Chronic inflammation plays a very important role in oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) and its only known precursor, Barrett’s oesophagus (BO). Recent studies suggest that microbial dysbiosis in oesophagus could contribute to BO and increase the risk of OAC development. TLR2 is involved in the innate immune response to microbial pathogens and host-derived molecules.We assume that TLR2 upregulation will increase the sensitivity of oesophageal cells to bacteria thus leading to chronic inflammation. We show that BO and early-stage OAC cells were responsive to TLR2 stimulation and TLR2 neutralising antibody successfully inhibits TLR2-mediated chemokine production. Factors secreted from TLR2-activated oesophageal cells induce TLR2-mediated differentiation of murine macrophages into M2-like/TAM phenotype. We identify High Mobility Group Box 1 protein (HMGB1) as one of the factors secreted from TLR2-stimulated oesophageal adenocarcinoma cells. We show that extracellular HMGB1 can efficiently prime macrophages for inflammasome activation, upregulating caspase-11 and IL-1B. Findings suggest that HMGB1 is a potential target for early-stage OAC, and that blocking TLR2 signalling may limit HMGB1 release, inflammatory cell infiltration and inflammation during OAC progression. Inflammation is critical for tuberculosis (TB) pathogenesis. Numerous host innate immune responses are induced upon M.tuberculosis (Mtb), although their mechanisms and impact on mycobacterium are not well understood. It is estimated that about one-third of the global population is infected with Mtb. When the infection is not cleared it remains in a latent form for a long time and only 5-10% of infected individuals will develop active disease at some stage of their life. The inhibition of inflammation is the main survival strategy of Mtb. Nitric oxide and IL-1β play an important role in the host resistance to Mtb. Here we investigated the role of caspase-11 in Mtb infection. We first show that STAT1 activation, nitric oxide production and IL-1β expression in macrophages is mediated by caspase-11. The iNOS-induced nitric oxide production is regulated through IFNAR/JAK/STAT1 pathway. We also determined that Caspase-11 is required for restriction of Mtb proliferation in murine macrophages. As nitric oxide is well known to confine the growth of Mtb we hypothesise that Mtb-induced caspase-11 increases iNOS expression and nitric oxide production and is a crucial protein in the innate immune response to TB-induced pathogen. Inhibition of caspase-11 by mycobacteria could be a potential mechanism allowing Mtb proliferation in the host.
Peptic ulcers are another example of the inflammation-related condition, caused by the interaction between bacterial and host factors and are often influenced by the presence of Helicobacter pylori infection or use of NSAIDs. This study demonstrates enhanced expression of caspase-4 in peptic ulcer patient biopsies, indicating that pyroptosis and non-canonical inflammasome activity may be processes involved in peptic ulcer disease. We show that primary murine macrophages infected with H. pylori upregulate caspase-11 (the orthologue of human caspase-4), activate caspase-1 and secrete IL-1β. Prostaglandin E2 inhibits caspase-4 mediated and indirectly caspase-1 driven pyroptosis probably through the limitation of DAMPs production. Overall, evidence is provided for a pathological role of caspase-4/11 in peptic ulcer disease and proposes that targeting caspase-4 or inhibiting pyroptosis may have therapeutic potential in the management of peptic ulcers
The Poetic Aspects in the Contemporary Polish Prose (Weronika Gogola: Little by Little)
No full textUtilizing speech act theory, this article examines the role of the poetic, understood as “a type of meaning different from the others” (Aleksandra Okopień-Sławińska), in Weronika Gogola’s work Po trochu [Little by Little] (2017, translated into Slovak as Po troškách) and the extent to which it is important for creating the “surplus of meaning” of the text (Paul Ricoeur). The coexistence of epical and poetic layers in Po trochu by Gogola, a Polish author and translator, is a factor of tension, or even competition, in terms of meaning and communication. Through the syncretism of epical and lyrical poetry, Gogola achieves a parabolic dimension in the story, making its narrative universal. The organizing factor within the text and the compositional layer of the work is the structure and semantics of the song and the emotional states of the author’s “self”. Gogola demonstrates that poetic syntax and lyrical digressions serve as the principal instruments for bridging the gap between poetry and epic literature. Furthermore, the openness of prose to the funeral song’s melody, semantics, and poetic expressions illustrates that Gogola’s story fits into the contemporary phenomenon of blurring the boundaries between poetry and prose

Abstract
Introduction and aim: Running has become an integral part of social life around the world. It is the simplest and most natural form of movement, which is the basis of human existence. The popularity of this physical activity is increasing rapidly due to many sports and recreational events which are being more frequently organized. In Poland, long-distance running events are held, not only in big cities, but also in small towns and villages. Being by nature a “social animal”, people feel pressure from their environment to participate in such events. Thus, what motivates them to frequently make extreme physical effort?
Materials and methods: The research group was comprised of 450 runners from all over Poland (331 men, 119 women). Diagnostic survey techniques and a questionnaire were used in the study.
Results: Nearly one-third of the respondents declared their willingness to participate and complete another half marathon (29.11%). Only 28 people wanted to become champions in their age group, and another 23 subjects wanted a prize sponsored by an employer or other organization interested in their participation in a run. More than half of the respondents replied that participation in the half marathon was the result of many months of leading a healthy lifestyle.
Conclusions: Participation in a half marathon allows competitors to fight their weaknesses. Runners want to participate in sports events because of the atmosphere and opportunity to spend time with their loved ones.

ABSTRACT
Introduction and purpose:
Many people worldwide suffer from chronic pain. It is a very inconvenient condition on its own, not only an accompanying symptom of other diseases. Conventional drug treatment may be insufficient in some cases or may even cause serious side effects in the long term. In response to this, we aim to demonstrate the diversity of alternative pain management techniques in this review and identify conditions where such techniques may be beneficial to patients.
State of knowledge:
This paper evaluates some of the most common alternative pain management methods (acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, mind body therapies, herbal medicine, music therapy) and their application in specific cases of chronic pain. We also describe the possible mechanisms of action involved in the effectiveness of these techniques, based on contemporary studies.
Summary:
In conclusion, there are conditions where alternative medicine may be beneficial for patients suffering from chronic pain. The studies taken into account showed the best effects for chronic musculoskeletal pain treated with methods such as acupuncture and massage. Mind-body therapies may reduce stress levels and symptoms of depression associated with chronic pain, consequently improving the quality of patients' lives. However, alternative methods should not yet be considered as replacements for conventional drug therapy. More studies are needed to evaluate whether alternative therapies will play a significant role in chronic pain management in the future.

Over my dead body! Carnival according to Weronika Murek, or literary creation of the world represented in "W tył, w dół, w lewo" ["Backwards, down, and left"]
No full textThe paper is an analysis of fictional reality in Weronika Murek’s W tył, w dół, w lewo focused on its carnivalesque character. The author refers to famous Mikhail Bakhtin’s study Rabelais and his world dedicated, among others, to popular festive forms and folk culture of laughter. Since there are certain rules sanctioning hierarchy and familiarity, as well as inversion or parody of values, different profanations, such as these in Murek’s prose, are possible to happen. The most disturbing one concerns the blasphemic exchange in which a juxtaposition leads to a replacement of Christ’s incarnated body by a rotting corpse. The author invokes Antoni Malczewski’s Maria and poetry of Józef Baka to find familiar voices and embed Murek in Polish literary tradition, taking under consideration her eccentric black humour, choice of grotesque language, and dark, melancholic imagination. W tył, w dół, w lewo not only breaks the taboo of talking about death, but also points out a specific aspect of necroviolence – social and lingual exclusion of the dead. Such provocative, patchwork form demands an answer concerning justification and validation of its usage. The final part of the article proposes to search them through the “metaphysics of meat” which refers to a concept developed in an essay by Jolanta Brach-Czaina
