The Restoration of Palazzo De Caro in Cetraro

    No full text
The building object of this study is located at the entrance of the historical center of Cetraro (CS), a village facing the Tyrrhenian sea in a privileged position on the Calabrian coast. Built in 1860 on behalf of don Ludovico De Caro the palace occupies lands that were bought for “ducati 1300” by the rich nobleman, and appears today to have absorbed the marks of time. Entering the ancient gates, history shows the particular oxymoron typical of the nineteenth-century buildings: the lower floors, typically rural with the old olive-press, and the upper floors, noble and primly divided by the servants’ rooms, connected in a path that highlights the lounges and living rooms with their sculptures, curtains, family portraits that narrate histories and legends. In this context, my choice as a restorer has been not to distort the spirit of time and places and their historical authenticity, respect the ancient mansion as it unveils itself to the habitual visitor. This operation doesn’t only aim to rehabilitate an ancient mansion, but, throught it, to retrain an entire historical centre, nowadays as abandoned as rich of history, art, architecture and beauty. The restoration of the buildings intents to be the beginning of a more structured project for a “Scattered Hotel”, whose benefits and responsibilities are shared by all the citizenry. The proposal for the project therefore considers the centrality of the functions inside Palazzo De Caro (restaurant, hall, reception) to be at service of a wide network of scattered guest houses in the historical centre connected by paths though squares, alleys and picturesque views

Special-needs patients in pediatric dentistry: Progeroid syndrome. A case of dental management and oral rehabilitation

    No full text
This report presents a case of an eight-year-old girl affected by a progeroid syndrome of unclear genetic origins. The patient’s dental history included oligodontia, premature deciduous exfoliation and roots abnormalities. She was treated with comprehensive oral rehabilitation using dentures. Oral health instructions were given during the whole treatment and follow-up period. The goal of improving the masticatory function and the esthetic was achieved, allowing the patient to increase her social abilities and self-confidence

A user's guide to optimal transport

    No full text
This text is an expanded version of the lectures given by the first author in the 2009 CIME summer school of Cetraro. It provides a quick and reasonably account of the classical theory of optimal mass transportation and of its more recent developments, including the metric theory of gradient flows, geometric and functional inequalities related to optimal transportation, the first and second order differential calculus in the Wasserstein space and the synthetic theory of metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below

Continuous Decompositions and Coalescing Eigenvalues for Matrices Depending on Parameters

    No full text
This contribution is a summary of four lectures delivered by the first author at the CIME Summer school in June 2011 at Cetraro (Italy). Preparation of those lectures was greatly aided by the other authors of these lecture notes. Our goal is to present some classical, as well as some new, results related to decompositions of matrices depending on one or more parameters, with particular emphasis being paid to the case of coalescing eigenvalues (or singular values) for matrices depending on two or three parameters. There is an extensive literature on this subject, but a systematic collection of relevant results is lacking, and this provided the impetus for writing the lecture notes. During the last 15 years, Dieci has had several collaborators on the topics under scrutiny. Besides the coauthors of these lectures, the collaboration with the following people is gratefully acknowledged: Timo Eirola (Helsinki University of Technology, Finland), Jann-Long Chern (National Central University, Taiwan), Mark Friedman (University of Alabama, Huntsville) and Maria Grazia Gasparo (University of Florence, Italy).LOM

Regularity theory for local and nonlocal minimal surfaces: An overview

    No full text
These notes record the lectures for the CIME Summer Course held by the second author in Cetraro during the week of July 4–8, 2016. The goal is to give an overview of some classical results for minimal surfaces, and describe recent developments in the nonlocal setting

In order to project a regional development policy, up-to-date basic studies are essential that intend to attend to the urgencies of the most excluded population. The author makes a review of the reality of Apurima starting with the geography, the political-administrative division and the demographic process to immediately internalize the living conditions of the population, especially employment, education, infrastructure. The work concludes with a review of the economic activities and the gross domestic product calling especially attention to peasants who currently have just s /. 1.43 a day to sustain himself.

As in previous works on the regional reality already published in the IECOS Magazine, the author offers an overview of the department of Ancash, where after the geographical and political-administrative description, the available infrastructure works and the population are indicated. Deficiencies in employment and social services (health and education) are shown and concludes with a review of the economy and productive opportunities in each sector. He once again highlights the interest in attending first to the needs of populations with fewer resources.

Introduction to Fatou components in holomorphic dynamics

This work is part of the C.I.M.E. Lecture Notes ``Modern Aspects of Dynamical Systems'' to be published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics -- C.I.M.E. subseries, corresponding to the course taught by the second author in Cetraro in August 2021.This survey is an introduction to the classification of Fatou components in holomorphic dynamics. We start with the description of the Fatou and Julia sets for rational maps of the Riemann sphere, and finish with an updated account of the recent results on Fatou components for polynomial skew-products in complex dimension two, where we focus on the key steps in the construction giving the existence of a wandering domain for a polynomial endomorphism of C2\mathbb{C}^2
