Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Investigating the relationship between skin color, ethnicity, and the Fitzpatrick skin scale
Background: The Fitzpatrick skin scale has long been used as a proxy for skin tone categorization.¹,² However, its initial creation was to classify reactivity of white skin to ultraviolet A radiation.¹,² A reported one-third of dermatologists conflate the Fitzpatrick skin scale for race and ethnicity.³ Approximately half of the dermatologists also reported utilizing the Fitzpatrick scale to describe skin color.³ The goal of this study was to compare the Fitzpatrick scale to skin color and ethnicity in a larger, cohort including the full spectrum of skin tones. Methods: Subjects completed a standardized questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed subjective classification methods: self-reported skin color descriptors (very fair, fair, olive, light brown, dark brown, and very dark), self-assessed Fitzpatrick skin type (I-VI) and ethnicity. The questionnaire included the following ethnicities: White, Asian, African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Multiple Ethnicities, and Other. If more than one ethnicity was chosen, the subject was reported as “multiple ethnicities.” Chi-squared tests were performed comparing skin color and ethnicity to Fitzpatrick skin type. Results: 440 subjects completed the questionnaire. Chi squared test revealed that each Fitzpatrick type was composed of significantly different proportions of skin colors (p < 2.2e-16). There was a weak association between Fitzpatrick type and self‐described skin color (Cramér’s V=0.3). While there is a significant difference in the percentage of each ethnicity found in each Fitzpatrick type (p < 2.2e-16), each ethnicity could not be modeled off individual Fitzpatrick types. There was representation from all ethnicities in each Fitzpatrick type. There was a weak association between Fitzpatrick-type and ethnicity (Cramér’s V=0.3). Conclusion: This study confirms previously cited flaws of the Fitzpatrick scale. Our study found no statistically significant proportion of a singular skin color descriptor or ethnicity within each Fitzpatrick skin type. This serves as emphasis that there is no relationship between physical traits or cultural identity with the Fitzpatrick scale

Está constituído a partir de uma visão crítica da História, o que permite que ?outras imagens?, fragmentárias e não monumentais, também tenham espaço. Em diálogo com o princípio da montagem, este esboço apresenta-se em duas partes. Na primeira, Imagens possíveis, estão citadas as imagens elaboradas em vida e post mortem acerca do austríaco-brasileiro que nasceu em Viena em 1900, se exilou no Brasil em 1939 e morreu no Rio de Janeiro, em 1978. Na segunda, Montagens possíveis, apresentam-se duas possibilidades de exercício biográfico: pela leitura alegórica do documentário O velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), entendido como instrumento de intervenção no contexto ditatorial brasileiro e de uma reelaboração biográfica concernentes às suas experiências europeias; e pelo Caderno de imagens críticas, registro dos encontros em Carpeaux pelo meio de imagens críticas produzidas a partir da cesura do presente.Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space.In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present
Demonstration of Steroid Atrophy From Chronic Topical Steroid Use in Various Fitzpatrick Skin Types
Background:
Topical steroids are commonly prescribed first-line medications for various inflammatory and autoimmune dermatologic conditions. Their widespread use raises the importance of proper use. Topical steroids have well-known side effects including skin atrophy, redness, striae, and telangiectasias. These side effects have not been well documented in patients of various skin tones. Primary care clinicians must recognize topical steroid side effects and their appearance in various skin tones. This paper will focus on representing skin atrophy, the most common steroid side effect, in a variety of Fitzpatrick skin types.
Case Presentation:
We present a series of images illustrating skin atrophy after prolonged topical steroid use on various Fitzpatrick skin types. The first case shows Fitzpatrick V skin with areas of erythema, hypopigmentation, and hyperpigmentation on the trunk. The second case presents thin skin with bright erythema and purpuric papules on the upper extremities of Fitzpatrick II skin. A third case showcases symmetric, parallel, linear, maroon dermal scars perpendicular to tension lines in the background of epidermal atrophy circum-anally and on the buttocks of Fitzpatrick IV skin. A fourth case exhibits Fitzpatrick III skin with shiny, thin skin and patches of hypopigmentation and telangiectasias on bilateral cheeks. The fifth case is a Fitzpatrick IV skin type with plaque psoriasis on the lower extremity and a background of skin thinning, hypopigmentation, and visible underlying vasculature from chronic topical steroid use. The final case represents Fitzpatrick VI skin with pyoderma gangrenosum, atrophied skin with overt hypopigmented patches adjacent to a cribriform scar. These cases feature the diverse presentations of skin atrophy on different Fitzpatrick skin types.
Conclusion:
Steroid atrophy is the most common side effect of chronic topical steroid use. Topical steroids are widely used for dermatologic conditions such as atopic dermatitis and plaque psoriasis. Steroids work to quell these inflammatory and autoimmune conditions and are overall tolerated well with proper use. Overuse of topical steroids is common and can cause known side effects of skin atrophy, erythema, striae, and telangiectasias. Recognition of steroid overuse requires knowledge of its presentation in various skin tones. In lighter skin types, atrophy is apparent with visible underlying vasculature and bright red erythema. In darker skin types, atrophy is more subtle and underlying vasculature may appear burgundy or maroon. Awareness of these differences in presentation will allow for quick recognition and immediate cessation of steroid use to prevent further side effects
