Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Sociological studies devoted to educational inequality frequently assume that access to rationality and scientific thought, in the evolution of the individual as in the history of the human species, necessarily involves learning to use writing and the institution of a “scriptural” relationship to language. In contrast to this thesis, it is possible, by relying on the Popperian theory of the origins of rationality, to establish that there is a specifically oral modality of rational and scientific thought (a “learned orality”), with its own standards, different from those of writing and written culture. The recognition of this scholarly orality leads to a revision of some of the ideas and practices currently dominant in the field of science education

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Alain Firode : The Laws of impact and mechanics according to D'Alembert. D'Alembert did not consider impulse to be a metaphysically more comprehensible phenomenon than attraction. Yet the two forms of mechanical causation nevertheless have a profoundly different epistemological status. Impulse was said to have the advantage over attraction inasmuch as it was controlled by totally rational laws which could be deduced a priori from the very nature of bodies, in other words their impenetrability. For D'Alemberrt this deduction is part of an original line of thought. The laws of impact are to be deduced from a more fundamental principle which is itself a necessary consequence of the impenetrability of bodies. This founding principle is that of equilibrium, and the possibility of deriving the laws of impact from it is guaranteed by 'D'Alembert 's principle'. Thus D'Alembert believes that he is able, in the Encyclopédie, to demonstrate the absolutely necessary character of the laws of impact.

Contemporary pedagogical theories that emphasize the notions of problem and problem-based learning most often hold the idea of truth, understood in its realistic sense of “correspondence between thought and reality”, to be a more or less suspicious and puzzling notion, linked to a dogmatic and authoritarian conception of science teaching. This study aims at questioning the validity of this mistrust that current pedagogical thinking shows towards the classical conception of truth. More precisely, it intends to establish, with the support of Popperian thought, that the assimilation of knowledge into a problem-solving process can lead to epistemological and pedagogical consequences that are very different from those currently drawn from it by the prevailing educational thinking

Bruner

    No full text
Bruner often refers to Popper’s famous theory of “world 3” in order to underline the major role which, according to him, cultural and social environment plays in development of human mind. Bruner’s conceptions, nevertheless, are different from Popper’s. Their disagreement mainly originates in the fact that Bruner doesn’t share the realistic conception of symbolic world which Popper supports. In addition, the psychologist assumes a structural difference between narrative and scientific logics, which contradicts some basic principles of popperian epistemology. The result is that Popper’s and Bruner’s theories of mind show different pedagogical implication

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
