The Role of English and Internationalization in the South… of the North
No full textThis paper addresses the role of English and internationalization in the geopolitical South (of Spain) of the North (Europe) and stemmed from a geographical-geopolitical North (Spain) - South (Brazil) partnership. The first author of this paper works at a university in the South of Spain (Universidad Pablo de Olavide - UPO) and the second author of this paper works in a Federal University in the Southeast region of Brazil (Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo - UFES) in what we can call the geopolitical North of the South in Brazilian geopolitical terms and in the South in global terms. Internal pressure at UFES and UPO to seek North-South partnerships has motivated the authors to look for partnerships outside their geopolitical region and this is how an agreement between UFES and UPO in Spain began.Departamento de Filología y Traducción. The Slaughter of Kachru’s Five Sacred Cows in Brazil: Affordances of the Use of English as an International Language
Get PDFThis paper reflects about a change in paradigm regarding the role of English in Brazil relating it to Kachru’s notion of the slaughter of the five sacred cows of English. So as to foreground this reflection the study reviews the role of English materialized in language policies in Brazil suggesting that there is a gap between people’s views of and language policies regarding the role of English in that country. The analysis of language policies in Brazil also suggests that English is seen as a foreign language on the one hand, in public schools, and as an international language on the other hand, in private language institutes. Based on the analysis of language policies in Brazil the study suggests that these two divergent views of English create a social divide between those who can afford to learn English and those who cannot. The study concludes that one possible way to slaughter Kachru’s five sacred cows of English in Brazil so as to enable the change of paradigm regarding the role of English in that country is to adopt a view of English as an international language
Working memory capacity and L2 speech production in a picture description task with repetition
No full textO estudo investiga a relação entre a capacidade de memória de trabalho e os ganhos na produção oral em L2 durante uma tarefa de descrição de figura com repetição. Partindo de Fortkamp (2000) que encontrou correlações entre a capacidade de memória de trabalho e medidas de produção oral em L2 e Bygate (2001b) que mostrou que na repetição de tarefas os participantes ganham em complexidade de fala em detrimento, principalmente da acurácia e da fluência, este estudo propõe que pode haver correlações entre os ganhos na complexidade da fala em L2 e a capacidade de memória de trabalho. Resultados do experimento mostram ganhos na complexidade da fala em L2, mas os mesmos não correlacionam com a capacidade de memória de trabalho. A falta de correlações é explicada em razão do pequeno número de participantes que não permitiu variação na capacidade de memória de trabalho
Effective English language training for nurses: A needs analysis from an ESP perspective
No full textThis chapter aims to propose a Needs Analysis (NA) of nursing students at São João de Deus Nursing School (SJDNS), Universidade de Évora (UÉvora), Portugal. In that university's English for Specific Purposes (ESP) context, the course objectives differ significantly from those of general English language instruction. English Language is a third-year elective subject, and as such, not all students choose to take that course, although the importance of English to their future careers is recognised. The elective subject offered to nursing students at UÉvora is based on their future professional needs, focusing on the use of English for healthcare
Current Trends in ELT and Affordances of the Inverted CLIL Approach
Get PDFThe aim of the study is to review current trends in English Language Teaching (ELT) technologies and methodologies to analyze affordances of an approach proposed by Finardi (in press) and called the Inverted CLIL approach. With that aim, the study reviews ELT technologies and methodologies in general and the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach with the use of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) and the Inverted Classroom approach in particular. A teaching project based on the Inverted CLIL approach to teach Sustainability through English as a foreign language is elaborated as an example. Results of the study suggest that technologies have a crucial role in language teaching and should be critically incorporated in ELT methodologies. Moreover, the analysis of the Inverted CLIL approach suggests that it represents a relevant alternative for ELT and a good example of the incorporation of technology in current ELT methodologies
