Field tests were conducted to measure temperature, velocity, and current direction with depth at several locations in the cooling water plume of the Allen S. King power generating plant on Lake St. Croix. The results of the study compare favorably with data from laboratory and analytical models operated under similarity criteria, specifically geometry and densimetric Froude number similarity.Environmental Protection AgencyStefan, Heinz G.; Schiebe, Frank R.. The concentration time series measured in a sectional model of the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) dechlorination basin was coupled with field measurements to predict the benefits of mUltiple transverse sampling points. The measured time series was used to generate synthetic time series representing the composite samples from two, three and four sampling points located in a cross section transverse to the flow. The analysis of this data indicates how much the multiple sampling points integrqte transverse gradients, decrease the necessary time to obtain a "representative" sample and decrease the deviation of a 1 second grab sample from a true mean value.Metropolitan Waste Control CommissionJohnson, Thomas R.; Stefan, Heinz G.. The tale of two climates - Baltimore and Phoenix urban LTER sites

    No full text
abstract: Two Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites now include urban areas (Baltimore, Maryland and Phoenix, Arizona). A goal of LTER in these cities is to blend physical and social science investigations to better understand urban ecological change. Research monitoring programs are underway to investigate the effects of urbanization on ecosystems. Climate changes in these urban areas reflect the expanding population and associated land surface modifications. Long-term urban climate effects are detectable from an analysis of the GHCN (Global Historical Climate Network) database and a comparison of urban versus rural temperature changes with decadal population data. The relation of the urban versus rural minimum temperatures (Tminu-r) to population changes is pronounced and non-linear over time for both cities. The Tmaxu-r data show no well-defined temporal trends.Corresponding Author: Anthony Brazel Arizona State University [email protected]

Numerical And Graphical Procedures For Estimation Of Community Photosynthesis And Respiration In Experimental Streams

    No full text
A numerical dissolved oxygen (D.O.) routing model DORM is developed to determine• total stream community photosynthesis (P) and community respiration rates (R) through successive routing of two-station diel D.O. measurements in a stream. The model differs from existing procedures for diel curve productivity analysis in that it uses the complete D.O. transport equation, including D.O. surface exchange, longitudinal dispersion, dependence of respiratory rates on water temperature and dissolved oxygen. The model is applied to the experimental field .channels at the USEPA Monticello Ecological Research Station to compute P and R values at different seasons and under different conditions of water temperatures, solar radiation, and pH. A sensitivity analysis shows that computed P and R values are most sensitive to residence times and surface oxygen exchange (reaeration) coefficients. New equations for surface exchange including the effect of wind have been developed and are summarized. A graphical simplified routing procedure produced P and R values which were 82 and 89 per cent, respectively, of those obtained by complete routing, with a standard deviation of les~ than 5 per cent. Nighttime longitudinal D.O. gradients were used to derive respiration rates, R. Maximum values of P and R in the MERS channels were 14.8 g m- 2 day-1 and 10.7 g -2-1 m day , respectively. P/R ratios ranged from 0.3 to 2.1. A seasonal dependence of P and R values was found as expected. Hysteresis in plots of hourly P versus photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensity was observed frequently. It was of such magnitude that it could not be caused by errors in surface exchange estimates or other physical processes.Environmental Research Laboratory - Duluth Office Of Research And Development U. Anthony Storr and his vision of creative illness

    No full text
Author of the article presents the phenomenon of "creative illness" through the prism of the views of the British psychiatrist Anthony Storr. The central issue of this article is the close relationship between genius and mental illness. The experience of "creative illness" (deep mental crisis, "dark night of the soul") was characteristic of many mystics, religious sect leaders and visionaries who created original philosophical and psychological concepts and made discoveries in the field of exact sciences. The author pays special attention to the crises of Freud and Jung, thanks to which visionaries created ideas that changed our perception of man and his culture. Anthony Storr treats them not so much as scientists, but as inspirational gurusUniwersytet w Białymstoku, Instytut Studiów Kulturowych, Zakład Antropologii KulturyBakan, Joel (2013), Dzieciństwo w oblężeniu. Field observations of dispersion, mating and development of Amorbus obscuricornis (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Coreidae)

    No full text
Aspects of the behaviour and development of Amorbusobscuricornis were observed in the field during spring and summer 1994/1995 at a site in southern Tasmania. Nymphs of A. obscuricornis remained predominantly on host plants on which they were initially observed for much of their development. Some movements between hosts occurred with migrating nymphs ranging in age from second to fourth instar. Most adults observed for the first time on hosts were males, a number of which were later recorded with females. Males were observed to have longer host residence times (7–56 days) than females (≤ 7 days). Complete nymphal development was roughly estimated to take considerably fewer degree-days under fluctuating field temperatures than at constant temperature. This suggested that other mechanisms (e.g. basking) may significantly influence nymphal growth and development

Stormwater Detention Pond Water Temperature Data Collection and Interpretation

    No full text
This report summarizes a field study that was conducted for the MPCA to collect the data necessary to support the formulation and validation of a temperature simulation model for urban stormwater detention ponds. The urban stormwater detention pond simulation model is included in the MINUHET (Minnesota Urban Heat Transfer) model that computes (simulates) runoff temperatures for typical residential and commercial watersheds. The model simulates single rainfall events or continuous periods of several months. The simulated runoff temperatures and volumes are used to estimate the heat loading from urban surface runoff to coldwater streams. To support these simulations, weather data and urban runoff temperature data had to be collected to serve as model inputs and to validate model outputs. In this report, a subset of the data collection effort is summarized. This report deals with stormwater detention ponds. The study was conducted in 2005 and 2006. Before a pond was chosen for detailed study, it was necessary to obtain an overview of typical stormwater detention ponds in an urban area. Eighteen stormwater detention ponds in Bloomington and Woodbury in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area were documented, and are described in this report. Then a pond was selected for detailed instrumentation and data collection. That pond was on the former property of the State Farm Insurance Company Headquarters, near I94 and Radio Drive in Woodbury. The pond is a wet pond with an outflow structure and one major stormsewer inflow from two parking lots and the roof. Instrumentation was installed to measure and record weather data, temperature stratification data in the pond, surface inflow and outflow data, pavement temperature and pavement runoff temperature data. In support of another study on the fate of road salt in the Twin Cities area, additional data were collected to document salinity profiles in urban stormwater detention ponds. These data are also presented in this report.Minnesota Pollution Control AgencyHerb, William R.; Weiss, Michael P.; Stefan, Heinz G.. (2011).
