Sense of Belonging to Science – Entwicklung eines Erhebungsinstruments für Lehramtsstudierende

Bislang wurde allerdings Sense of Belonging weitgehend domänen-unspezifisch untersucht. Studien, die den Sense of Belonging to Science angehender Naturwissenschaftslehrkräfte untersuchten, fehlen zudem nahezu vollständig. Schlagworte: Sense of Belonging, universitäre Naturwissenschaftslehrerbildung, Lehramtsstudierende, Fragebogenkonstruktion ABSTRACT (English)Various studies indicate that the educational success of university students is also determined by their Sense of Belonging – the extent to which an individual considers himself or herself to belong to a particular social environment. Previous studies, however, have predominantly examined university students' Sense of Belonging in a domain-unspecific way. Moreover, there is a lack of studies addressing student science teachers. Part of the reason for this lack of research is the scarcity of appropriate instruments to measure student teachers' Sense of Belonging within a specific academic domain. Purpose: This exploratory study addresses the question to which extent student teachers' Sense of Belonging to Science can be assessed in a reliable and valid way using a likert scale questionnaire. Sample/Setting: The sample consists of 129 student teachers training to become teachers of at least one natural science subject (biology, chemistry, physics). The study was conducted in the science education courses held at the [university name] (Germany) in the 2019 summer term. Design and Methods: Inspired by existing instruments, a likert scale questionnaire for assessing Sense of Belonging to Science was developed. The collected data was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis. Items with commonalities less than .50 and with substantial double-loadings were eliminated from the scales. Moreover, the validity of the developed questionnaire was explored using both correlation and differential analyses. Results: The data analysis revealed that the developed questionnaire consists of five scales, which can be used to form a composite scale. The five scales have good or very good reliability (.84 £ a £ .92); the reliability of the composite scale is acceptable (wh = .72). The correlation analyses indicate that Sense of Belonging to Science, assessed with the developed questionnaire, is distinguishable from other constructs such as interest in science or university belonging. Finally, the differential analyses show (as expected) that men as well as students who undertake more extensive studies in science have a significant greater Sense of Belonging to Science than women or students who undertake less extensive studies in science (.15 £ |rES| £ .17). Conclusions: The exploratory data analysis provide results which strongly indicate that the developed questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument to assess student teachers' Sense of Belonging to Science. Possible implications of the present study for science educational research as well as for science teacher education are outlined at the end of this paper. Bislang wurde allerdings Sense of Belonging weitgehend domänenunspezifisch untersucht. Insbesondere Studien, die den Sense of Belonging to Science (SBS) angehender Naturwissenschaftslehrkräfte untersuchten, fehlen nahezu vollständig. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Do Individuals See What They Expect to See in a Physics Experiment? Revisiting Schlichting’s Example of the Illumination of a Filament

    No full text
The present study investigates the alignment between individuals’ preconceived naïve conceptions and their actual observations during a physics experiment. Building on Schlichting’s (1991) well-cited but anecdotal example of a classroom experiment, we conducted an online survey involving 158 participants to assess their predictions, reasonings, and subsequent observations of a light bulb filament’s illumination. Our results indicate a high consistency between participants’ predictions and their reasonings but only very weak alignment between these predictions and reasonings and their actual observations. Moreover, logistic regression analyses revealed significant but modest effects of predictions and reasonings on observed outcomes. These findings imply that while naïve conceptions can influence individuals’ observations, the impact is not as predictive as some anecdotal examples within the literature on physics education might suggest

Exploring the Validity of a Single-Item Instrument for Assessing Pre-Service Primary School Teachers’ Sense of Belonging to Science

    No full text
It can be suggested that pre-service primary school teachers’ sense of belonging to science may be influential to their professionalization within university-based teacher education programs, which intend to prepare them for teaching natural sciences in primary school. Nevertheless, because only few studies have examined teachers’ sense of belonging to science so far, further research in this regard seems both reasonable and necessary. To this end, there is a need for instruments enabling a valid assessment of pre-service primary school teachers’ sense of belonging to science. However, existing sense-of-belonging-to-science instruments require a comparatively long time on task due to their significant number of items. Consequently, the applicability of these instruments within research is limited because surveys in educational contexts must often be brief and economical. The research we present in this article aims to tackle this issue by examining on an exploratory level whether and to what extent pre-service primary school teachers’ sense of belonging to science can be validly assessed using a single-item instrument. In doing so we report qualitative, as well as quantitative, findings that provide evidence regarding the validity of our instrument. Implications of the present study for future research are outlined at the end of this article

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
