La labor del biógrafo tiende a valorar aspectos propios de la persona que respondan a una expectativa del lector, mayormente cuando se trata de una personalidad de las Bellas Artes. Asi ocurre con el pintor argentino Antonio Berni (1905-1981) : el centenario de su nacimiento ha suscitado varias exposiciones retrospectivas y la redacción de una primera biografia compléta porel periodista Fernando Garcia. La ponencia destaca la labor de investigadory el mecanismo de búsqueda de la información en torno a la persona tanto como en torno a la obra : pintura, escultura, participación en el gran movimiento de renovación del arte asi como en la historia del compromiso del artista a lo largo del siglo XX.
La atención principal de esta biografia se aplica a una relación vivida de la creación y de la preservación de la obra, a exaltar su repercusión en el marco de Argentina y su lugar en el mundo occidental. Puede verse en este libro un ejemplo de biografia interpretativa en que la personalidad del creador explica la obra y el prestigio de la obra refuerza el talento de reportaje del biógrafo.Delprat François. Fernando Garcia Mercadal: drawing as a manifesto
Get PDF[EN] In this paper, we analyse the Fernando García Mercadal’s drawings, with which he studied Mediterranean architecture during his stay in Rome, in the early twenties of the 20th century 1, comprehending them as a manifesto. The traveller nature of this architect, who acted as a link between the Spanish and European avantgarde, strongly influenced the development of his drawing and the character of his work, to the point of turning them into transmitters of the new ideas. The use of the image of popular architecture as a code, which acts rather by convention than by analogy, allows us to interpret it as a manifesto, and to relate it with his later work.[ES] En este estudio analizamos los dibujos que Fernando García Mercadal realiza para estudiar la arquitectura mediterránea durante su estancia en Roma, en los primeros años veinte del siglo pasado 1, entendiéndolos como manifiesto. El carácter viajero de este arquitecto, que actúa como vínculo de España con la modernidad europea, influye fuertemente en el desarrollo de su dibujo y el carácter de su obra, hasta el punto de convertirlos en transmisores de las nuevas ideas. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. In 1984, a young Guatemalan labor activist by the name of Edgar Fernando García was disappeared by the Policia Nacional from the streets of Guatemala City. He left behind his wife, Nineth de Garcia, and a young daughter; his body was never located. The following year, Nineth helped to found the Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo, a families of the disappeared group that was among the first to openly confront Guatemala\u27s military government for its atrocities against the civilian population. After the armed conflict came to an end, Nineth García eventually went on to become an influential member of the National Assembly and a reformist presidential candidate. Their daughter, Alejandra, is now a prominent human rights attorney. Decades later, the (accidental) discovery of the Archivo Histórico de la Policia Nacional de Guatemala (AHPN) in 2005, which housed more than 80 million documents, made it possible for many Guatemalans who had lost family members to the security forces in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1990s, to learn about the final disposition of their loved ones. Because of the prominence and persistence of his family members, Fernando Garcia\u27s was among the first to be researched in the APHN and also one of the first to result in successful legal proceedings against the members of the AHPN for human rights abuses. This presentation will explore how archival research of historical documents, as in the García case, can shed light on legal proceedings such as this.
Garrard-Burnett received her PhD in History from Tulane University and has been on the faculty at the University of Texas since 1990. She is Director of LLILAS Benson and a professor in Latin American history. Her most recent work, which she co-edited with Stephen Dove and Paul Freston, the Cambridge History of Religions in Latin America, was published in April, 2016. She is author of Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit: Guatemala Under General Efraín Ríos Montt, 1982-1983 (Oxford, 2010); Terror en la tierra del Espiritu Santo (Guatemala: AVANCSO, 2012); Viviendo en La Nueva Jerusalem (Guatemala: Editorial Piedra Santa, 2009), Protestantism in Guatemala: Living in the New Jerusalem (University of Texas Press, 1998). She is co-editor, along with Mark Lawrence and Julio Moreno, of Beyond the Eagle\u27s Shadow: New Histories of Latin America\u27s Cold War (University of New Mexico Press, 2013). She has also edited On Earth as it is in Heaven: Religion and Society in Latin America(Scholarly Resources, 2000) and co-edited with David Stoll, Rethinking Protestantism in Latin America (Temple, 1993). She is also co-author, with Peter Henderson and Bryan McCann, of the History of Modern Latin America(Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2018). Her research interests include: historic memory and human rights during the Cold War in Latin America, archives and digital humanities, and contemporary Central American history. She is equally interested in religious movements and ethnic identity in Latin America, Pentecostalism and other Protestant movements, and the intersection of religion, culture, and politics in Latin America.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
