Report Of The Iii National Week Of Epilepsy [relatório Da Iii Semana Nacional De Epilepsia]
The National Demonstration Project on Epilepsy has sensitized epilepsy lay associations across the country in a joint effort to help bringing epilepsy out of the shadows in Brazil since 2003. The third edition of the National Week of Epilepsy took place in forty-one cities covering all regions in the country. The main objective of this activity was to bring awareness of this condition for the community and also for patients and their relatives. The strategy employed was an uniform message "Citizenship". There were distributions of folders, public manifestations, social activities, lectures and concentrated in a week of activities. In conclusion, the National Week of Epilepsy is a reality in our country and it contributes to reinforce the national movement to bring epilepsy out of the shadows, diminishing the associated stigma and improving the quality of life of people with epilepsy and their families.114205207Fernandes, P.T., Salgado, P.C., Noronha, A.L.A., Barbosa, F.D., Souza, E.A., Li, L.M., Stigma Scale of Epilepsy: Conceptual issues (2004) Journal of Epilepsy and Clinical Neuropshysiology, 10 (4), pp. 213-218LM, L., Sander, J.W., National demonstration project on epilepsy in Brazil] (2003) Arq Neuropsiquiatr, 61 (1), pp. 153-156Fernandes, P.T., Noronha, A.L., Cendes, F., Silvado, C., Guerreiro, C.A., Li, L.M., Relatório do I Encontro Nacional de Associações e Grupos de Pacientes com Epilepsia (2003) Journal of Epilepsy and Clinical Neuropshysiology, 9 (2), pp. 93-96Sem Crise, R., Sem Crise, R., (2003) 5 (Edição Primavera)Fernandes, P.T., Leitão, L.M., Souza, R.J., Li, L.M., Relatório do II Encontro Nacional de Associações e Grupos de Pacientes com Epilepsia (2004) Journal of Epilepsy and Clinical Neuropshysiology, 10 (2), pp. 117-120Fernandes, P.T., Souza, R.J., Li, L.M., Relatório da II Semana Nacional de Epilepsia (2004) Journal of Epilepsy and Clinical Neuropshysiology, 10 (4), pp. 245-247Fernandes, P.T., Souza, R.J., Li, L.M., Relatório do III Encontro Nacional de Associações e Grupos de Pacientes com Epilepsia (2005) Journal of Epilepsy and Clinical Neuropshysiology, 11 (2), pp. 97-9
The Private Cost of Long-Term Care in Canada: Where You Live Matters
Canadians expect the same access to health care whether they are rich or poor, and wherever they live, often without direct charge at the point of service. However, we find that the private cost of long-term care differs greatly across the country, and within provinces, we find substantial variation, depending on income level, marital status, and, in Quebec alone, on assets owned. A non-married person with average income would pay more than twice as much in the Atlantic provinces as in Quebec, while a couple with one in care would pay almost four times as much in Newfoundland as in Alberta.long-term care, private cost
Interruptions and failure in higher education: evidence from ISEG-UTL
Abstract Failure in Higher Education (HE) is the outcome of multiple time-dependent determinants. Interruptions in student’s individual school trajectories are one of them and that’s why research on this topic has been attracting much attention these days. From an individual point of view, it is expected that interruptions in school trajectory, whatever the reason, influence success in undergraduate programs either this success is measured by time required to obtain a degree, the scores obtained in some more “critical” subjects in these programs or the number of enrolment registrations. Nevertheless, performing a paid job during interruption may in given circumstances positively affect academic success on account of the combination between learning and occupational experience The study of interruptions’ impact on failure in HE is also important to help Education institutions at all grades to think about changes in organisational procedures, class timetables, syllabuses contents or teachers recruitment and training in order to fight this problem. From a social and political point of view, interruptions are also a matter of concern since failure in HE affects individual’s lifelong learning opportunities, distort public funding allocation efficiency to HE institutions and create lag effects in the desired/planned outcomes of HE production functions. So, research on the impact of interruptions on failure in HE is important to support policy measures definition related to the articulation between Upper Secondary and HE programs. In previous research we have shed some light into the determinants of failure in 1st year of HE studies using longitudinal data on ISEG’s undergraduate students. A further insight into this database revealed the existence of a meaningful number of students with interruptions in their school trajectories either in the transition from Upper Secondary to HE or within HE programs. In this paper our major concern is to find some evidence on interruptions effects on HE failure among ISEG students using a life cycle approach with control group. We are interested in knowing whether the above mentioned effects are gender and/or specific graduation program neutral. We also want to search if work experience may counter balance the effect of interruption on academic success. We hope to be able to derive some useful recommendations to address policy making in the fields of pedagogic methodologies in HE, articulation between academic and occupational learning in the framework of Bologna Chart and public funding/fellowship policies in HE.Key words: Portuguese Higher Education; Interruption; Failure; Adult Students; Bologna Chart; Policy Implications
Secure computing on reconfigurable systems
This thesis proposes a Secure Computing Module (SCM) for reconfigurable computing systems. SC provides a protected and reliable computational environment, where data security and protection against malicious attacks to the system is assured. SC is strongly based on encryption algorithms and on the attestation of the executed functions. The use of SC on reconfigurable devices has the advantage of being highly adaptable to the application and the user requirements, while providing high performances. Moreover, it is adaptable to new algorithms, protocols, and threats. In this dissertation, high performance cryptographic units for symmetric encryption and hash functions, were designed in order to achieve a high performance SCM. Implementations results, in particular for the AES algorithm, suggest improvements of more than 500% in terms of Throughput per Slice compared to related art, with absolute throughputs of up to 34Gbit/s on a Virtex II Pro FPGA. A method to attest dynamically reconfigured hardware structures is also proposed. In addition, this method does not penalize the performance of the SCM. The presented attestation mechanism allows the configuration bitstreams to be stored in unsecured locations, for example on an external memory or even on the internet, without posing a security threat. Experimental results obtained by implementing the proposed SCM on a Virtex II Pro FPGA suggest speedups up to 750 times, compared with software implemented algorithms, achieving throughputs above 1Gbit/s at low area cost. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the applicability and identifies the main advantages of implementing SC on reconfigurable systems.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers
In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)
Report on industrial attachment with R.J. Crocker Consultants Pte Ltd
This report documents the undertaking of the author’s six months of industrial attachment. It was the industrial attachment that gave him the opportunity to discover the innovative skills and expertise from his fellow colleagues working the organization. Throughout the attachment, the author had learnt a great deal from various trained and experienced engineers. He had been exposed to a variety of training namely (1) reinforcement concrete design, (2) steel and connection design, (3) modelling structures for design and analysis using software, (4) visual inspections for buildings, (5) preparing tender documents, (6) drawing, presentation and attending and (7) handling online submissions for building inspections, structural plans, design calculations, etc. Furthermore, by attending project meetings, preparing materials for presentations, tendering documents and drawings to privatized companies and public sectors all bestowed the author a concrete understanding of the type and quality of work required of and produced by a qualified engineer. Without the industrial attachment, all these practical skills and knowledge might not have been attainable by learning in the university alone. It was overall a fruitful experience
Information Circular 12. Selected Bibliography of Cuyuna Range Geology, Mining and Metallurgy
This work is an extension of a bibliography prepared by the author as part of a final report submitted to the U.S. Bureau of Mines for grant # G026/t002 entitled "Manganese-bearing ores of the Cuyuna iron range, east-central Minnesota, Phase 1". This bibliography, though directed primarily towards the geologic and mining literature of the Cuyuna range, does include the major works on the metallurgical aspects of the Cuyuna ores. For historical interest the very earliest publications are included. This list of abbreviations given on pages 2-4 are consistent with those from the "Bibliography and Index of Geology".Beltrame, R.J.. (1977). Information Circular 12. The Late Fifteenth-Century Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order: Manuscripts, Sources, and Authorship
By studying the Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order, also known as the ‘Jüngere Hochmeisterchronik’, I aimed to examine the circulation of (historical) knowledge within the Teutonic Order at the end of the fifteenth century. Only decades earlier, the order suffered major defeats in Prussia and its former heathen enemies had become Christians. It has been the underlying aim of this study to gain an understanding of the introduction of the order’s tradition of history writing to the Dutch Low Countries, far removed from the traditional production centres in Prussia and Livonia, as well as the effects this change of location, and accompanying change of perspective had on the content and purpose of such historical production within the order. In this dissertation, I have been able to establish that the chronicle was written in Utrecht, in various phases from 1480 to 1491 and possibly the mid-1490s, by the Utrecht land commander Johan van Drongelen and his personal secretary. The material product of their collaboration is a manuscript kept in Vienna, which can now be classified as an author’s copy. I have also shown in detail how the text was constructed, and that the author(s) managed to collect a wide selection of sources – including from locations hundreds of kilometres away from the city of Utrecht. We have therefore come much closer to understanding the specific circumstances under which the chronicle was written, as well as the preconditions of that environment which made it possible to undertake such an ambitious project
