    Shaping identity of Indonesian young generation in the United States of America

    Education plays a key role in providing the younger generation with knowledge, competences and skills and improving their lives in future. In Indonesia, learning and achievement at universities abroad are given high social status. The United State of America (USA) attracts many young Indonesian people for studying. However, they face some obstacles in USA like coping with the difference in languages, differences in culture, and the high cost of living. By using qualitative research with a phenomenological approach from Alfred Schutz, I examine young Indonesians motives to travel to America and their processes in shaping their identities as an Indonesian diaspora. The subject of study was Indonesian young people who came to California for studying in internationally reputable universities such as UCLA (University of California Los Angeles), UCR (University of California Riverside), and UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara). Based on my observations and in-depth interviews it can be concluded that their main motives to study in US Universities were to gain the best education, the best job opportunity and the highest social status. While, in shaping their identities as an Indonesian diaspora, these students also continued to communicate with significant others, people who had significant position in their lives, and with new reference groups such as Permias (Persatuan Mahasiswa Indonesia di Amerika Serikat /Indonesian Student Unions in USA), and Komunitas Muslim California (California Muslim Community)

    This study describes the strategy of the propaganda of the Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI) congregation in facing the resistance of Muslims to create a positive self-image in the community. Using ethnographic studies with da\u27wah strategy theory, and the dramaturgy theory of this research was carried out in the villages of Tenjowaringin Salawu, and Cipakat Singaparna Tasikmalaya, West Java. The results revealed that the relationship between JAI and the community, especially non-Ahmadiyya Muslims in the villages of Tenjowaringin Salawu and in the Cipakat Village, Tasikmalaya, was quite good. Although there were several explosions caused by provocations from groups outside the community of the two villages, this did not make JAI far from the surrounding community. The propaganda strategy carried out by the Ahmadiyya community was carried out in three activities, namely communication through Rabtah activities, cooperation through charity wikari, and education through the Tarbiyah / School institution. The application of da\u27wah strategies carried out by JAI was able to shape their positive self-image in the community in accordance with the expectations of the congregation and the management of the Ahmadiyya organization. AbstrakPenelitian ini menggambarkan strategi dakwah jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI) dalam menghadapi resistensi umat Islam untuk menciptakan citra  diri  positif  di  masyarakat. Menggunakan studi etnografi dengan teori strategi dakwah, dan teori dramaturgi penelitian ini dilakukan di desa Tenjowaringin Salawu, dan Cipakat Singaparna Tasikmalaya, Jawa Barat. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa hubungan JAI dengan masyarakat khususnya umat Islam non-Ahmadiyah di desa Tenjowaringin Salawu maupun di Desa Cipakat Singaparna Tasikmalaya cukup baik. Meskipun beberapa kali muncul letupan-letupan yang disebabkan oleh provokasi dari kelompok di luar masyarakat dua desa tersebut, namun hal itu tidak menjadikan JAI menjadi jauh dari masyarakat sekitarnya. Strategi dakwah yang dilakukan jemaat Ahmadiyah dilakukan  dalam tiga kegiatan yaitu komunikasi melalui kegiatan Rabtah, kerjasama melalui wikari amal,   dan pendidikan melalui lembaga Tarbiyah/Sekolah. Penerapan Strategi dakwah yang dilakukan oleh JAI mampu membentuk citra diri positif mereka di masyarakat sesuai dengan yang diharapkan oleh jemaah maupun pengurus organisasi Ahmadiyah

    Indonesia sebagai negara multikultural tahun 2014 masih menghadapi banyak permasalahan kebangsaan salah satu diantaranya adalah krisis komunikasi terhadap kelompok minoritas. Berbagai hasil penelitian dari Kontras, Setara Institute, Center For Religious And Cross-cultural Studies (CRCS) maupun the Wahid Institute mengungkapkan, setiap tahun peristiwa intoleransi terhadap kaum minoritas terus meningkat. Dalam aturan perundang-undangan, Indonesia memberikan jaminan kebebasan beragama sebagaimana tercermin dalam Pasal 29 ayat 2 UUD 1945, dan Pasal 28 E Amandemen UUD 1945, serta diperjelas pada Undang-undang No. 39 Tahun 1999 tentang Hak Asasi Manusia. Selain itu, pada 23 Februari 2006 Indonesia meratifikasi Kovenan Internasional Hak-Hak Sipil dan Politik atau International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) tentang perlindungan terhadap hak-hak minoritas. Namun di sisi lain ada perundang-undangan yang dianggap menjadi dasar sikap diskriminatif terhadap agama minoritas seperti UU No. 1/PNPS/1965, SKB No. 1/79, Peraturan Bersama Nomor 9 dan 8/2006 dan SKB No. 3/2008. Kondisi ini melahirkan krisis komunikasi kebangsaan yang perlu diselesaikan tidak hanya dengan sikap apologis pemerintah (Corporate Apologia), tapi juga harus melalui komunikasi solutif seperti penggunaan komunikasi krisis model lima tahap dari Mitroff (Coombs dan Holladay, 2010).     Respon Da'i Terhadap Gerakan Jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (Jai) Di Tenjowaringin Tasikmalaya

    Penelitian ini mengungkapkan tentang respon da'i (pelaku dakwah) di Tenjowaringin Salawu Tasikmalaya dalam menghadapi gerakan Jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI). Penelitian dengan metode etnografi ini menggambarkan respon dan strategi da'i dalam menghadapi gerakan JAI di Desa Tenjowaringin dan Kutawaringin (desa pemekaran Tenjowaringin). Para da'i merespon gerakan JAI tersebut dengan dua kegiatan dakwah yaitu dakwah defensif atau bertahan dan dakwah ofensif atau aktif. Dalam melaksanakan dakwah secara aktif para da'i melakukan empat strategi dakwah: 1) dakwah bil-hikmah atau memberi contoh berupa kata-kata maupun perbuatan yang bernilai islami, 2) dakwah bil Mauidhatil Hasanah atau dakwah dengan pemberian nasehat dan sosialisasi, 3) dakwah bil Mujadalah atau dakwah melalui dialog dan perdebatan, dan 4) dakwah bil-hal atau dakwah melalui pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia (SDM)

    This research is to study about da\u27wah in the community of dowry fighters. How is the process of preaching the dowry fighting community in influencing mad\u27u. This study uses qualitative methods with the methodology of feomenology. The technique of collecting data in this research is observation and interviews. This study uses the theory of trusted communication with the input process output method, namely by incorporating da\u27wah material into the target mad\u27u with the process of studies and then obtaining its output in the form of successful da\u27wah with a decision full of mad\u27u\u27s confidence in emigrating. The theory makes the results of this study with the introduction of religious problems in the community, especially young men in courtship, which then held an approach to the reasons for the behavior of madu using the productivity of the dowry fighters community by motivating madu to solve the shari \u27provisions. at Islam which then made the mad\u27u run according to what was suggested by the missionary community.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji dakwah kelompok dalam komunitas pejuang mahar khususnya proses komunikasi dalam dakwah komunitas pejuang mahar untuk memotivasi jamaahnya menghindari pacaran. Penelitian ini menggunkan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitin ini dengan obervasi dan wawancara.  Penelitian ini menggunakan teori komunikasi kelompok terpercaya dengan input-proses-output. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan alur pengenalan masalah keagamaan masyarakat terutama pemuda dalam maraknya pacaran. yaitu memasukan bahan dakwah ke dalam sasaran mad’u dengan proses kajian-kajian lalu mendapatkan outputnya berupa keberhasilan dakwah dengan keputusan penuh keyakinan mad’u dalam berhijrah. proses pendekatan dilakukan dengan melihat alasan dari prilaku mad’u. komunitas pejuang mahar memotivasi mad’u menemukan jalan keluar yang sesuai dengan ketentuan syari’at Islam.Â

    This article aims to find out how communication (proselytizing) message appeals in the literacy proselytizing of Ustadz Giovani Van Rega. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study has revealed that the message appeals used by Ustadz Rega are rational message appeals, appeals of fear, appeal for rewards, and motivational appeals. Ustadz Rega is considered using a rational appeal because he refers to the Qur'an and hadith. While the appeal of fear clearly understood from his statement that Indonesian Muslim youths Islam will suffer from weak faith, physical, science, and weak creativity if they are illiterate. The proposition of the appeal of reward is the more a Muslim well literate, the more honorable he is. Whilts the motivational appeal refers to his that the dakwah of literacy is a necessity in order to be able to conquer the world
