Citation: Fritch, Melia Erin (2018) "Teaching as a Political Act: Critical Pedagogy in Library Instruction," Educational Considerations: Vol. 44: No. 1. https://doi.org/10.4148/0146-9282.1868This article establishes a theoretical framework for critical library instruction (and thereby critical information literacy) that is built upon critical feminist theory, critical race theory, and engaged pedagogy, among others. Using the ideas and work of theorists to create a path linking the ideas of critical analyses together, the author demonstrates the importance and need for critical information literacy within library instruction to empower students, creating opportunities for lifelong learning. Noted within the article are the obstacles for librarians who focus on feminist engaged pedagogy in their teaching; however, the author shares with readers that the challenge is in fact worth the struggle. Overall, the article presents a theoretical foundation for the author’s call to action – it’s time for librarians to move forward as teachers-as-activists roles and use library instruction as a transformation into a lifelong learning experience for students

The industrial sector is highlighted as the chief cause of the rapidly environmental change in the recent years. Because natural environment has strong correlation with human life and his activities to achieve well being, thereby industrial or business sector, the chief of human activities, is demanded to play as the central role in Sustainable Development. According to sustainable concept, there are three missions that have to be performed in sustainable development-sustainability in economics, environment and social. Of the three missions, environment and social are always taken in weak positions by business Actors. As the central actors in sustainable development, business actors should take the three of missions balance and together in their entire business activities. Based on same literatures and some successful stories in business practices, the author founded two important patterns that evolve recently how a corporation could be named as a suistanle corporation. First, the corporation developed partnership in eco-industrial part and the second; the corporation did its corporate social responsibility. Keywords: sustainability, sustainable corporation, , sustainable concept for busines

Nothing is Permanent but Change: The Journey to Consolidation and Back

    Get PDF
Responding to a staffing shortage and assessment of usage data, eight of Hale Library's nine service desks were consolidated into one service point. Fourteen months later, the Libraries conducted an assessment of the consolidation using reference transaction data, responses to a survey administered to Libraries’ staff, and responses from a student focus group. The assessment revealed many logistical and staffing challenges with the new desk. As a result, a separate service point for reference was created directly outside the consolidated desk. Our statistics indicate that this was a successful change

Species delimitation of Melia dubia Cav. from Melia azedarach L. complex based on DNA barcoding

The genus Melia L., which belongs to the â Mahoganyâ family Meliaceae, is a source of important phytochemicals with marked medicinal properties. Species identification in Melia is complex due to the existence of overlapping morphological features. Though Melia dubia Cav. is listed as a synonym of Melia azedarach L., it is not clear from the available literature whether they are the same species or different, and the species complexity still remains unresolved. In the present study, ten accessions of M. dubia and M. azedarach were analysed by DNA barcoding using three chloroplast DNA markers (rbcL, matK, and trnH-psbA), and one nuclear marker (ITS2). Intra-specific divergence was not found in any of the four markers. However, the inter-specific divergence between M. azedarach and M. dubia ranged between 0.3% (rbcL) and 4.7% (ITS2) for individual markers, and for the combined dataset, it was 8.5%. Among the four markers, ITS2 was found to be the most suitable marker for differentiating M. azedarach and M. dubia. Parsimony analysis of the DNA barcoding data showed a clear segregation between M. azedarach and M. dubia as distinct monophyletic clades in all the markers, except the rbcL marker. Our results based on Bayesian analysis of the concatenated dataset strongly support the view that M. dubia be considered a distinct species; not a synonym of M. azedarachThe accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the manuscript may differ slightly between what is listed on this page and what is listed in the pdf file of the accepted manuscript; that in the pdf file of the accepted manuscript is what was submitted by the author

Purpose: This study aims to integrate CSR programs and stakeholders in the Saguling Reservoir area (West Java) by proposing recommendations in the form of an ecosystem of shared value model that can be implemented by all stakeholders in related ecosystems to restore the function of the Citarum River and increase regional competitiveness, to increase the standard of living of the people in the area.   Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework used is The Ecosystem of Shared Value as a New Model of CSR, Pentahelix Collaboration, and Nature-Based Solution Approach.   Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a qualitative research approach with an action research design. There are two types of data used in this study, namely Primary Data (Group Discussion, Observation, and Depth Interview) and Secondary Data (Literature and Document Review). This study also uses the data analysis technique of the Miles and Huberman model which consists of three stages that must be carried out, namely data reduction, data display, and data verification.   Findings: The results show that the CSR approach in the Saguling Hydropower area is quite good, but the shared value generated is still low, especially for the Saguling Reservoir and the hydropower itself, because the current community development programs are only aimed at the community. The community development program in the Saguling Reservoir has been running for a long time, but these programs have not been integrated, so an ecosystem of shared value model is needed that can integrate several of these programs. The mapping of community development programs along the Citarum river basin (West Java) from upstream to downstream (Citarum River ring 1 area) must be carried out through intense collaboration and coordination with stakeholders.   Research, Practical & Social implications: The practical implication is that this ecosystem of shared value model can help stakeholders carry out a common agenda, namely "Restoring the Functions of the Citarum River". In addition, the application of the model, which is also accompanied by the ongoing collaboration between stakeholders, can transform the Saguling Reservoir area into a tourist village area as a form of support for the development agenda in West Java and Indonesia.   Originality/value: The research carried out is very significant in the study of corporate social responsibility, especially in the implementation of the ecosystem of shared value model, the output of which is a change towards a tourism village area. This research is also research oriented to social change

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the contribution of stakeholder engagement to Sustainable innovation (SI) within the context of sustainable food and agriculture context. It investigates whether engagement with different stakeholders promotes sustainable innovation. The empirical analysis is based on a distinctive single case study of sustainable-oriented ventures that successfully deliver sustainable impact within their SI. A qualitative study, which an abductive approach was performed in order to delve the stakeholder engagement and its relationship with the type of SI. We use multiple data sources. Primary data such as semi-unstructured interview with several representative innovating ventures. Then, secondary data from multiple sources gathered to acquire deeper knowledge and information to capture the retrospective data about SI journey and development process of the ventures. Result showed that proactive role in venture to engage with various and wider stakeholders is needed to foster the SI particularly in system-building SI. Moreover, sustainability-oriented innovation (SI) as a journey and its characteristics constitutes from on practices that constitute day-to-day SI activities, strategies, activities, and linkages that resulting SI output and outcome. Particularly, stakeholders are part of these linkages. The wider and various of stakeholders also its engagement in co-creation of SI is affecting the output and outcomes of its SI. This research extends the response to the lack of systematic knowledge about stakeholder collaboration in SI. This paper provides a fine-grain qualitative analysis, a single case study, and identifies several types of stakeholders with various roles in the SI
