Culture, Constructivism, and Media: Designing a Module on Carlos Slim
Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helú has been a fixture on Forbes’s list of billionaires since 1991, and for the past three years, he has topped the magazine’s list of the world’s richest men. Although he is exceptionally well-known in his native Mexico, the majority of American college students have never heard of Carlos Slim. This article presents a curricular module built around this charismatic and controversial figure. The module requires students to navigate Internet-supported news media in the target language (Spanish), and engages them in independent, small-group, and larger, teacher-led activities designed to foster critical and comparative skills in cultural competency and analysis through process-based, student-led inquiry. Pedagogically and methodologically, the author engages with the recommendations and conclusions of recent studies by ACTFL and MLA committees, as well as by other leading scholars, regarding both the use of technology in the classroom and the idea of “teaching culture.” The unit’s content significantly deepens and enriches students’ understanding of social, economic, and political issues in modern Mexico. The article carefully situates each stage and aspect of the curricular unit presented in relation to recent studies of constructivism in foreign language acquisition and on the hierarchy of Bloom’s taxonomy of learning objectives
Abstract: Miguel Mihura Santos (1905-1977) belongs to that generation of Spanish playwrights whose development was frustrated by the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the repressive conditions that followed it. He is the author or co-author of 23 plays and is generally considered the most important comic playwright of his generation. The key to his theatrical genius is his vision of a world in which all reality has been transformed into theatre, a world in which reality has been devoured by its imitations. In his best plays Mihura captures this vision in a theatre that feeds on theatre: i.e., metatheatre. In his signature work, Tres sombreros de copa (Three Top Hats, 1932), Mihura brilliantly makes use of numerous theatrical devices to create a metatheatrical density unequaled in the modern Spanish theatre. In this hilarious but chilling portrait of a world writhing in absurdity and inauthenticity, Mihura places himself squarely in the modern theatre’s Absurdist current and invites comparisons to Valle-Inclán, Ionesco, Chaplin, and early Hollywood. Keywords: Mihura, Spanish theatre, Metatheatre, Theatre of the Absurd, Early American cinema

do cinema mundial. Desta forma, observamos no cinema contemporâneo a influência
cinematográfica de muitas obras do passado, ainda que as possibilidades tecnológicas
Robert Altman e Martin Scorsese contextualizadas no cinema do realizador norteamericano Paul Thomas Anderson.
In the History of Cinema we can consider, even in its most ancient times, the
pioneering spirit of many directors who left their marks and changed the language of world
cinema. Therefore, we observe in contemporary cinema the cinematographic influence of
many past works, even if the technological possibilities are fully embraced in today's
creations. The presence of the artistic influence, within the changes occurred in cinema, as
well as all revolutionary events which allowed for the evolution of the seventh art, raises
questions about originality and the techniques used in creation of motion pictures. The
director as an artist, uses his or her creativity and ideas structured in an unique way, in a
process of bringing together the parts which result in innovative works.
The main objective of this thesis is the reflection around cinema as an art form and
the artistic influencing lines of the past. Nevertheless, reflecting about the cinematographic
influence requires understanding the references inserted in some works as a way of
following an artistic standard or considering the possibility that contemporary cinema is
based on imitation. This thesis is based on bibliographic and cinematographic studies, and
empirical analysis, and proposes the observation of film records from the works of Robert
Altman and Martin Scorcese contextualised in the works of American director Paul
Thomas Anderson.
This investigation takes support in the existence of cinematographic artistic
influence as stated by E. H. Gombrich in his book The Story of Art (2006) which
emphasises the creative processes of artists and their influences, as well as in the book Art
and Illusion (2000) by the same author, who defends the artistic influence as a process

This reading of Confissões de Minas, which is held as the first collection of writings in
prose by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, focus mainly on two elements. The first is the
author‟s statement regarding his willingness to write an useless book, an expression
featured by the light remark of the chronicle. The second element is the arrangement of
the book in thematic sessions, which allow us to see it as a museum that organizes texts
of the past written in different moments. In order to discuss Drummond‟s writings, this
reading brings to light the Critical Fortune of the book, as well as its principles, some of
which were proposed by Antônio Cândido and João Adolfo Hansen. We also base this
research on the works by Benedict Anderson and Hans-Georg Gadamer, so we could
bring to evidence the many sides of the museum, assimilable to our object of study,
which can be understood as an archive of the Brazilian Modernism. This archive refers
to aspects that vary from the avant-garde movement in the 20‟s to the committed poet of

Extranodal NK/T-cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type A Report of 73 Cases at MD Anderson Cancer Center
Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL) is uncommon in the United States. We report 73 patients with ENKTL, including 49 men and 24 women (median age, 46 y). Sixty-three patients had nasal/upper aerodigestive tract disease; 10 had extranasal disease involving skin, small intestine, epiglottis, testis, adrenal glands, kidney, and breast. Complete staging data were available for 68 patients: 44 stage I/II and 24 stage IV. Fifteen of 69 (22%) had lymphadenopathy and 10/63 had bone marrow involvement. Histologically, 67/73 (92%) showed necrosis, and 48/70 (69%) had an angiocentric/angiodestructive growth pattern. The neoplastic cells showed a wide spectrum: medium sized (n = 34), mixed small and large (n = 21), large (n = 13), and small (n = 5). In situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA was positive in every case. Immunohistochemical studies showed expression of cytotoxic markers (100%), T-bet (96%), CD2 (96%), CD3 (93%), CD56 (90%), and ETS-1 (64%). Ki-67 was >= 60% in 46% cases. Therapy was known for 64 patients; 14 received only chemotherapy, 8 radiation alone, and 42 received combined radiation and chemotherapy. Median survival was 4.2 years, and 5-year overall survival was 46% (median follow-up, 3.8 y). Extranasal disease, high International Prognostic Index score, and high proliferation rate correlated with poorer prognosis. We conclude that ENKTL cases in the United States are similar to those reported in Asia and other countries. Absence of the angiocentric/angiodestructive pattern and presence of lymphadenopathy, features underemphasized in the literature, occurred in appreciable subsets of patients. The International Prognostic Index score, anatomic site of disease, and proliferation rate had prognostic value in this patient cohort.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000312486700002&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701PathologySurgerySCI(E)45ARTICLE114-233
____________________________________________The evolution of the Information and Communication Technologies is causing
deep social changes. This transformation raises new educational challenges,
stemmed from the necessity to train the individuals for the Knowledge
Society.
In parallel, current pedagogical trends emphasize three key factors in the
learning process. On one hand, the active role played by the student, main
character of his/her own formative development. On the other hand, the social
nature of learning, insisting on the importance of interactions among the students
and collaborative learning. Finally, the need to adapt the learning process
according to student’s characteristics, in response to cognitive learning models.
According to novel pedagogical models, the introduction of Information
and Communication Technologies in the educational context gives new chances,
making easy student monitoring, access to personalized contents and interaction
among the different actors involved in the process, generating scenarios
in which students’ active participation and initiative prevail.
Therefore, during the last decades the educational activity has been experimenting
deep changes, reflection of the social transformation, the evolution
of the pedagogical theories on which it is based and the introduction of new
technologies. Evaluation, as an inherent part of the educational process, is also
affected by this evolution. Thus, a peak of alternative evaluation models,
characterized by active participation of the students and a strong formative
propose, can be witnessed.
Among them, peer review fits naturally in the current pedagogical framework,
making the students take the responsibility of evaluation and facilitating
knowledge exchange by means of collaboration between authors and reviewers.
Nevertheless, application of peer review in educational environments usually
follows a non-differentiating approach, ignoring the guidelines about adaptation
promoted by the very same schools of pedagogy on which it is based.
This thesis tackles the problem of integrating adaptation to the student,
essential for current pedagogy, in the educational peer review methodology.
As a result of the study of pedagogical models, it is proposed the influence
of the student’s cognitive profile in the results of the peer review process, and
the consequent need for adapting such process depending on students’ characteristics.
The analysis of the activities and learning mechanisms related to
peer evaluation leads to identify the author-reviewer matching process as the
characteristic mechanism of the methodology in which the adaptation should
be integrated.
Based on the previous premises, a generic, flexible, expressive and intuitive
model has been proposed for specifying the criteria to be applied for matching
the reviewers. In order to facilitate the adoption of the proposed methodology,
a reviewers assignment system has been developed which, based on the latter
model, allows to consider pedagogical and adaptive criteria in the process of
reviewers selection, in addition to the validity requirements intrinsic to the
process.
Finally, a main objective of this thesis has been its empiric evaluation,
which has led to the application of the proposed methodology to real educational
environments. Its application to two completely different subjects has
allowed to contrast and adjust the theoretical ideas proposed, and to evaluate
the validity, capacity for generalization of the proposed model as well as the
developed system. Experimental results validate the hypotheses on which this
thesis is based, confirming the influence of the student’s level of knowledge and
the effect of the reviewers matching criteria in the process results
Costs and benefits of debt and debt service reduction
The author evaluates the costs and benefits of debt and debt service reduction (DDSR) from the point of view of five countries that have concluded Brady deals: Costa Rica, Mexico, the Philippines, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He concludes that, contrary to widely held views, commercial banks have probably benefited from the operations. Commercial bank participation in DDSR is voluntary, so direct financial savings to the country are probably negative at present values. The benefit from DDSR is not that debt is bought at"bargain prices"at the expense of commercial banks. It appears difficult to justify a DDSR operation on purely financial grounds. A more realistic way to look at a DDSR operation is to view it as a"project"that involves a certain financial cost. The return on such a project is how the DDSR operation improves the macroeconomy, or contributes to development. The main purpose of DDSR is to establish a more efficient arrangement between debtor countries and commercial banks, leading to improved conditions for development. A DDSR operation that does not help development is costly and should not be undertaken. The impact of DDSR on development is usually measured by the increase in the growth rate of GDP, but it is too soon to measure that for these five countries. A suitable alternative is to look at the change in investment patterns. A strong policy framework is needed if debt and debt service reduction are to significantly improve development. In Mexico and, to a lesser extent, Venezuela, improved and sustained strong adjustment policies have generated the greatest development benefits. Gains have been less in smaller countries where policies were not as supportive. The author concludes that for a country to benefit from DDSR, it needs significant indirect benefits (such as increased domestic and foreign savings). Direct benefits are likely to be negative because of the commercial banks'financial gains and because DDSR operations are frontloaded. DDSR operations cannot be justified solely by direct benefits and savings in cash flow.Strategic Debt Management,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Financial Intermediation
