The main focus of Orientalist thought is nothing but to reconstruct and influence Islamic civilization. Their enthusiasm to activate orientalism is increasingly challenged by the presence of Islam as a religion that has followers of most of the world\u27s population. One of the actions of orientalism towards the Islamic world is to start a research movement on the Qur\u27an and al-Hadith which are the basis of the law and guidelines of Muslims. Not far from the critics of the Qur\u27an and al-Hadith, they also deconstructed aspects of the development of science, Islamic law, and even the originality of Islamic history. Some famous orientalism figures, one of them is Reinhart Dozy, a famous orientelism from the Netherlands with the concept of literacy in the history of Islamic civilization in Spain. Even though he received a lot of criticism and appreciation from both orientalists and Muslim thinkers, his literary work has had a great influence on Islamic civilization. The discussion steps of this study are entirely carried out using qualitative research that is library research. To be more useful and function properly, this paper is equipped with an explanation using the method of description, interpretation and analysis of data in each discussion. This is done, none other than to focus the discussion to produce a consistent and comprehensive understanding

Discussing Suhrawardī, certainly, cannot be separated from his concept of thinking about illumination (ḥikmat ishrāqiyyat), which has contributed to the foundation of human knowledge and awareness. The research question in this paper is how esotericism in Shihāb ad-Dīn Suhrawardī’s Sufism relates to the philosophy of Illumination. The discussion of this study is based on qualitative library research. In each section, this paper is supplemented with an explanation using the methods of description, interpretation, and data analysis to build a consistent and thorough understanding. This paper found that, according to Suhrawardī, knowledge is the presence of an object to know. Knowledge can only be attained by the mystic into the inner sanctum of higher visionary experiences (mushāhadat wa mukāshafat), not merely through logical reasoning. To achieve the truth of implicit knowledge, the philosophy of illumination suggested the combination of reason and intuition, which are complementary to one another. Regarding esotericism, in this case, the soul is interpreted as a part of the realm of light, but it is trapped in darkness, so spiritual training must be carried out in the spirit of soul-giving. Suhrawardī believes that only a clean soul can be connected to the divine light, wherein at that level, one can get intuitive wisdom, or in Sufism, it is called the laduni knowledge

The era of modernity with all its advances, from the outward side, is sufficient for the life of modern society, while from the spiritual side of modern society there is still a drought of spiritual values, such as the loss of morals, mismatches in the application of science and technology, the decline in the quality of faith, individualistic and materialistic attitudes can be resolved with Sufism with using the method. Until now, Sufism is believed to be able to solve various crises of modern society. Therefore Sufism can be used as a means and fulfillment of human needs from the spiritual side. This modernity has also generated industrialization, science, and technology, which have increasingly influenced life, resulting in a shift in patterns and lifestyles, where moral values, ethics, and teachings began to be abandoned because they were deemed incompatible with modern values. At this point, there is a crisis of existence and spiritual aridity. Through the implementation of Sufism in the modern era, it is very much needed by transforming the understanding of Sufism, not only maqamat and awhile, but modifying Sufism in such a way that it becomes dynamic and open so that it is easily understood and practiced by humans in modern times. Sufism as a means to get closer to God is expected to be able to overcome the spiritual crisis because with its values Sufism can provide a balance in human life. From the results of the analysis, it can be seen that Sufism has a breath of fresh air to overcome the various problems of modern society and to balance between lahiriyah and batiniyah. Also, Sufism becomes important for the life of modern society because Sufism can function as a controller and controller of humans so that the human dimension is not reduced by modernization that directs humans to anomalous values so that it will lead humans to the achievement of moral superiority
