Jose Rizal in Filipino Literature and History

Filipinos in the twenty-first century are separated from their past by the language they speak. While it is true that Jose Rizal, National Hero of the Philippines, wrote a great deal for a nation that cannot read him in the original Spanish, nevertheless his vast and excellent opus guarantees his place in Filipino letters. These include, of course, his two major novels, Noli me tangere, published in 1887, and El filibusterismo, published in 1891, and an annotated edition of Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas that Rizal completed and published in 1890. Despite the fact that today Rizal’s works are read mainly in translations into English and Filipino, his privileged status as outstanding Filipino author results from the ease with which he wrote and his essential contributions to the birth of the nation. Born in Calamba, Laguna, on June 19, 1861 the young Rizal grew up in a cultured home, with a sizeable library, something rare in the colonial Philippines. He learned to read and write at his mother’s knee, and it was she who introduced him into the world of books and literature. He is said to have composed verse as a child, but unfortunately this is not documented. The only one of those early works extant is the poem written in Tagalog titled Sa Aking Mga Kabata (“To my fellow children”), which he allegedly wrote at the age of eight. This and another, later, poem are the only two he wrote in Tagalog, his native tongue; the rest are all in Spanish. Sa Aking Mga Kabata contains one of the most quoted lines in Filipino poetry: “ang hindi magmahal sa kanyang salita/ mahigit sa hayop at malansang isda” (he who does not love his native tongue is worse than a beast and a stinking fish). This poem compares Tagalog with English, Latin, Spanish and other languages and is even more popular as of Tagalog’s, later Filipino, designation as official language of the Philippines in 1937. Unfortunately, neither its style nor content make it easy to recognize Rizal as the author, and in view of its dubious provenance this poem is, at best, only attributable to Rizal. It may not even be by Rizal. Such are the myths that shroud the childhood of history’s great men. Jaime C. de Veyra established the canon of Rizal’s poetry in his compilation Poesías de Rizal. 1 It is generally agreed that the best English translation is The Complete Poems and Plays of Jose Rizal2 by the late Filipino National Artist for Literature, Nick Joaquin. Joaquin provides the original Spanish and its matching translation in parallel, enriched with an insightful introduction to each poem and pertinent annotations. From these basic reference works one can divide three periods in Rizal’s poetry. The first is the Early Period (from 1871 to 1882), including poems composed when he was a student in Manila, first in the Ateneo Municipal, a school belonging to the Jesuits, and then when he studied at the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomás, a center belonging to the Dominican order. Following this, the Middle Period (from 1882 to 1888) includes a small number of poems composed during his first trip to Europe. And finally, the Final or Mature Period (between 1889 and 1896), during which he traveled to Europe for a second time and was exiled in Dapitan. To this period belongs the valedictory poem entrusted to his family after his execution on December 30, 1896

Did Jose Rizal Die a Catholic? Revisiting Rizal's Last 24 Hours Using Spy Reports

There is one issue in Jose Rizal's life that historians have debated on several occasions but remains unsettled. That issue is whether Rizal, on the eve of his death, re-embraced the Catholic faith and disassociated himself from Masonry. The matter is controversial because parties on both sides are affiliated with an organization that promotes moral values and the pursuit of truth. The pro-retraction camp is represented by the Jesuits, the archbishop of Manila, and a few other members of the Catholic hierarchy. Since they are all ordained priests, they are assumed to be truthful in their pronouncements. Their opponents are the members of Masonry, an organization that promotes brotherhood, integrity, decency, and professionalism. This paper resurrects the retraction controversy in the light of the emergence of another primary source that speaks about what happened to Rizal on the eve of his death. This document was never considered in the history of the retraction controversy because it was made available to researchers only in the past decade. The author of the report is a credible eyewitness because he was physically present in the vicinity of where Rizal was detained. His narrative is lucid and contains details that cast doubt on the credibility and reliability of earlier primary sources on which previous narratives were based. This document needs serious consideration and should be included in the discourse on Rizal's retraction

Tracing José Rizal : Auf den Spuren José Rizals. Ein Dossier

The texts collected in this bilingual dossier were written on different occasions and represent only some of the results of the search for clues announced in the book's title. The collection begins with the English translation of the first chapter of my biography, José Rizal's Struggle for Life and Death, which was published in 2021. This is followed by a short philosophically draped piece that I designed as a template for a conversation with the Italian philosopher Sergio Givone about outsiders and the paradox of freedom. Then there is a brief discussion of the critique of racism advocated by Blumentritt and Rizal, based on a previously unknown letter, and a micro-biography published on the Internet in 2022. Of particular importance for me is the information about an academic Symposium held in Vienna in December 2023, to which Blumentritt's biographer Johann Stockinger had invited. The last texts in the Dossier refer to the long overdue recognition of Rizal as an author of the Spanish language by the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid, which took place in spring 2023

Translating the Nation: Rizal, the Novel and Philippine Literatures in the Regions

Legislated as the official national myth in the Philippines, the revolutionary novels of the foremost Filipino hero, Jose Rizal, continue to be taught across the secondary and tertiary levels in the Tagalog-based language of Filipino. Together with English, Filipino enjoys a distinct advantage as a fully developed literary language in the country, even as the many other languages of the archipelago are slowly and inexorably sliding into desuetude and neglect. Arguing that translation is at once a metaphorical and appropriative act, the author proposes that Rizal’s already inescapably translational texts be made available to Filipino students in their own mother tongues, in recognition of their evocative power (that includes rather than excludes) on one hand, and in order to more fully realize Rizal’s vision of an emancipated national body, on the other

Daniel Yust Rizal Maretta, 2017, 50135051.K, “Analysis of CPO (Crude Palm Oil) Freezing During Loading at Port of DABN Gresik”, Thesis Port and Shipping department , Diploma IV Program, Semarang Merchant Marine Polytechnic, Supervisor I: Sri Murdiwati, S.Sos., M.Si Supervisor II: H. Aslang, M.Pd., M.Mar.E. In the special port owned by PT DABN takes place the loading of crude palm oil (CPO) products. The problem faced by the port is often the occurrence of freezing during the process of loading crude palm oil (CPO). This research aims to determine the causes of freezing during the loading process of crude palm oil (CPO), the impact caused by the freezing, and efforts made to prevent reoccurrence of freezing during the process of loading crude palm oil (CPO) at the port of Gresik. The method that author used in this research is descriptive and qualitative. This research is written descriptively containing the description and explanation of several theories as well as connected one variable with another variable. In this research the author tries to give an explanation of how the loading process of crude palm oil (cpo) at the port of DABN Gresik. In addition, this research also uses data from observations directly or indirectly, interviews with stakeholders, and literature studies. The factors causing freezing during the loading of crude palm oil (CPO) at port of DABN Gresik are unpredictable weather conditions with lower than usual air temperature, unsuitable loading process procedures, and crude palm oil (CPO) will loaded in the shore tank take too long duration. The impacts caused by the freezing is delayed loading process, berthing time becomes longer, as well as increased operational costs. Efforts are made to prevent freezing during crude palm oil loading process (CPO) at port of DBN Gresik is to pay attention to weather forecast issued by BMKG before loading process carried on, put loading ramp / shore tank on a closed shelter protected from weather Outside, direct loading from truck to shore tank and directly pumped into the vessel so that loading process can be sustainable, as well as supervise and train the stevedoring labor at port of DABN Gresik. From this research is expected process of crude palm oil (CPO) loading at port of DABN Gresik can fluently held and reduce costs which caused by freezing of crude palm oil (CPO). .
