ABSTRACT Travel is moving from one place to another with different destinations. One such journey is Muhammad Ali's trip to Japan, was documented in a novel entitled Ar-Rihlatul Yabaniyyah. In the novel, there are many descriptions, information, and phenomena about Japan in 1909 conveyed by Muhammad Ali.This novel contains numerous descriptions, information, and observations about Japan in the year 1909, as conveyed by Muhammad Ali in his writings. This study aims to identify how Japan is portrayed by Muhammad Ali, analyze his subjectivity during his stay in Japan, and examine how he depicts the culture he encountered there. This research employs Carl Thompson's travel literature theory, which consists of three main concepts: reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the others. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive method, with data consisting of quoted sentences and paragraphs from Ar-Rihlatul Yabaniyyah. Data collection techniques include reading and note-taking, while data analysis is conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach, comprising data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study reveal that Muhammad Ali’s depiction of Japan employs both objective and subjective approaches. In terms of self-revelation, Muhammad Ali falls into the category of a romantic traveler, expressing various aspects of his identity, such as being a Muslim, as well as emotions like joy, displeasure, annoyance, and discomfort.
