    BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN GENRES AND AUDIENCES: INTERACTION IN SCIENCE BLOGS

    Science blogs have been attracting the attention of linguists, rhetoricians and communications scholars alike as the discourse of science becomes more and more influenced by new digital media and more scientists engage in the practice of blogging for the purposes of knowledge dissemination and public engagement. The paper analyses writer-reader interaction in a corpus of blogs maintained by individual scientists, considering both posts and comments. The analysis is corpus-driven to the extent that it harnesses corpus linguistic tools for frequency observations to detect language patterns of interaction, but tries to interpret frequency in light of linguistic and rhetorical models of audience engagement in science popularization. The findings confirm a tendency of blogs to exploit all of the linguistic strategies of audience involvement already found in the literature, reader pronouns, questions and the conversational style typical of spoken science communication, testifying to the blurring of genres and audiences

    The work here described aims to offer a starting point for improving and making a generic maintenance process more efficient, first of all thanks to the use of a cutting-edge technology such as augmented reality, as a key tool that makes it possible and immediate to communicate to operators which are the fundamental stages of the maintenance process to be followed in the working area. Furthermore, thanks to the use of two methods applied in the context of the Design for Disassembly (later described), we also propose to search for all the possible sequences to get to the removal of a target component to be adjusted—in particular the optimal one (if it exists, in terms of time and costs) to be subsequently applied in an augmented reality “self-disassembly” model that can be viewed and followed by the operator, in a way that is still very little used today

    RSM applied to lattice patterns for stiffness optimization

    Purpose - In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) is applied to a three-point bending stiffness analysis of low-cost material (PLA) specimens printed using FDM technology to analyze the performance of different internal lattice structures (Octet and IsoTruss principally). The purpose of this study is to extend the definition from a discrete (lattice) model to an analytical one for its use in subsequent design phases, capable of optimizing the type of cell to be used and its defining parameters to find the best stiffness-to-weight ratio. Design/methodology/approach - The representative function of their mechanical behavior is extrapolated through a two-variable polynomial model based on the cell size and the thickness of the beam elements characterizing it. The polynomial is obtained thanks to several tests performed according to the scheme of RSM. An analysis on the estimation errors due to discontinuities in the physical specimens is also conducted. Physical tests applied to the specimens showed some divergences from the virtual (ideal) behavior of the specimens. Findings - The study allowed to validate the RSM models proposed to predict the behavior of the system as the size, thickness and type of cells vary. Changes in stiffness and weight of specimens follow linear and quadratic models, respectively. This generally allows to find optimal design points where the stiffness-to-weight ratio is at its highest. Originality/value - Although the literature provides numerous references to studies characterizing and parameterizing lattice structures, the industrial/practical applications concerning lattice structures are often still detached from theoretical research and limited to achieving functioning models rather than optimal ones. The approach here described is also aimed at overcoming this limitation. The software used for the design is nTop. Subsequent three-point bending tests have validated the reliability of the model derived from the method's application

    Optimizing Driver Position Using ANOVA and ANNs

    This study investigates how the optimal driving position is shaped by the forces acting on the driver and the performance requirements of an FSAE vehicle. Using a comprehensive dataset based on a parametric model, key SAE-standardized input variables are parameterized: the horizontal and vertical coordinates of the H-point, the horizontal distance between the AHP and H-point, the seatback angle, and the steering wheel position. The objective is to identify the ideal driving setup that balances vehicle performance with driver comfort. ANOVA is utilized to determine which of these ergonomic factors most significantly affect acceleration performance, while artificial neural networks provide a comparative method for validating results and predicting outcomes for new configurations. The novelty of this study lies in integrating driver positioning dynamics into performance optimization, providing a systematic approach to vehicle design before the CAD prototyping phase

    Analysing Audiovisual Dialogue: Linguistic and Translational Insights

    This volume is a collection of studies on the language of audiovisual − film and television − dialogue, both in original and translated texts. It hosts contributions by researchers addressing the topic from different but complementary disciplinary angles and various linguistic and socio-cultural perspectives. The volume thus testifies the growing interest for this variety of language “written to be spoken as if not written” (Gregory 1968; Taylor 1999), also described as “parlato-recitato” (Nencioni 1976) or “simulated spoken language” (Rossi 1999), a type of fictional, pre-fabricated dialogue (Marzà, Chaume this volume; Romero this volume) which − unlike narrative − is ultimately produced and received in the audio-oral medium and − unlike theatre − is irreversibly bound to a fixed, represented context. The need for systematic investigations on large samples of audiovisual dialogue has in fact begun to be specifically addressed in the last few years (e.g. Rossi 1999, Bubel 2006, Romero 2008) and has resulted in the creation of corpora of original and/or dubbed language, many of which computerized (see various contributions in Chiaro et al. 2008, Matamala 2008, Alfieri et al. 2008, Quaglio 2009). In response to the call for research on audiovisual translation (AVT) to rely on large-scale collections of data, the present volume also includes investigations on a corpus of original and dubbed film dialogue created at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the University of Pavia within the nationally funded inter-university project Ecolingua . The corpus of English dialogues dubbed into Italian presented here reflects the current dominance of English as the major source language (SL) in AVT as well as the vigour of research in a country, Italy, where dubbing is still the most common modality of audiovisual transfer

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
