Anchee Min and Elif Armbruster discuss, The Chinese-American Dream at Ford Hall Forum, video recording, 5/23/2013
Twenty years after penning her first memoir on growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, author Anchee Min now releases The Cooked Seed: the true story of her journey to, and within, America. Min draws us in to bear witness to her trek from a land of deprivation to one of surrounding bounty that is just out of her reach. She works five jobs at once and suffers rape, exhaustion, and divorce. As these revolutionary personal events shape her world view, they culminate in the biggest shift of all: the birth of her daughter. Moderator Elif Armbruster (Associate Professor of English, Suffolk University) helps Min present her unique immigration narrative within the universal struggle of building a life despite precious few fundamental tools. Anchee Min will be signing and selling copies of her book, The Cooked Seed, at the end of the event.https://dc.suffolk.edu/fhf-av/1131/thumbnail.jp

“The Harem Within”: The Complexity of Female Identity in Elif Shafak’s Black Milk
In a post-modern world where selfhood is defined by diversity and multiplicity,
Elif Shafak’s Black Milk outlines how women’s experiences depict a tragic fate. In this memoir Elif Shafak writes about motherhood and authorship and the many stereotypes women face in a patriarchal society. For many women writers, motherhood became a burden, because they had to choose between being a “good” mother and a “good” author. This article aims to explore the complexity of women’s identity in Black Milk through a feminist perspective and also to analyse Elif Shafak’s feminine discourse and its empowerment process. Elif Shafak questions the norms of the patriarchal society, because it enforces a “given” identity for both women and men. Black Milk also outlines the anxiety women face when it comes to writing, motherhood and many other experiences,
describing an enormous pressure put on women to reflect an ideal
Przeciw nakazom niepamięci – wariant Elif Shafak
The main aim of the article is the return to the historical events which happened on the Turkish territory of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and to identify traces of the past. During the First World War the attempted extermination of the Armenian nation took place, and those tragic occurrences remain a literary theme until now. An interpretation of the novel written by Elif Şafak – almost a hundred years after those events – leads to some rather pessimistic cultural conclusions. The author creates, in The Bastard of Istanbul, a mournful vision of the common tendency to forget and the mutual agreement to inherit prejudices against members of other nations, but especially those who live in neighbouring areas. The main aim of the article is the return to the historical events which happened on the Turkish territory of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and to identify traces of the past. Symbolism of Names in Elif Şafak’s Pinhan, Araf and Mahrem
Today, a piece of literature is open to different spheres of critical reading because it has more than one single semantic dimension, and the reader, in equal terms with the author, has a word to tell about the imaginative outline of the text. In this structure of cooperation, what the author should do is to disappear after granting the reader the possibility to see, and the reader should see the unsaid and the backstage of the text following the path depicted openly or secretly by the author. Here, this study covers from the reader’s perspective the analyses of the symbolic power of names which Elif Şafak, in her literary works, puts great stress on, and also of the contributively function of the names to understand the overall meaning of the text
Effects of Mother-Delivered Social Stories and Video Modeling in Teaching Social Skills to Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders
WOS: 000393988600003An adapted alternating treatments design was used to compare mother-developed and delivered social stories and video modeling in teaching social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Mothers' opinions about the social validity of the study were also examined. Three mother-child dyads participated in the study. Results showed that mothers could develop social stories and video images with 100% accuracy and implement them with high treatment integrity. Results also showed that both interventions were effective in teaching social skills to children with ASD, and both mothers and children could maintain and generalize their acquired skills; video modeling was more efficient for two children and social stories were more efficient for one child. Finally, mothers' opinions about the social validity of both interventions were positive. Future research is needed to support these findings.Turkish Academy of Sciences and The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: Elif Tekin-Iftar is grateful to Turkish Academy of Sciences and The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) for their supports
