Two compatible constructs in current historical Jesus research, Part I: John Dominic Crossan. Current historical Jesus research produces a variety of profiles of Jesus. In a series of articles two compatible constracts of Jesus (those of John Dominic Crossan and Andries van Aarde) will first be discussed and, second, two ireconcilible constructs (those of Robert F Funk and Walter Schmithals). The profiles of Jesus are depicted from the perspective of the researcher's view on the continuity and discontinuity between Jesus and early Christianity and the relevance of historical Jesus research for church and theology. This article focuses on John Dominic Crossan's view on Jesus the peasant

Technological learning: towards an integrated model

    No full text
The acquisition and growth of technological knowledge is fundamental to competitive advantage in the emerging knowledge economy. This article explores the notion of technological learning as a means of developing the capabilities that underpin long term sustainable innovation. The research project was designed to identify new ways of understanding learning in the context of technology-driven SMEs, so the methods employed were essentially inductive in nature. This has resulted in the development of a comprehensive framework comprising four inter-related knowledge categories (Identity, Direction, Capability, and Relationship), each of which has an associated learning process (learning by reflecting, learning by strategising, learning by doing, and learning by interacting). We argue that it is the interaction between these knowledge categories that generates the new insights that are essential to technological learning

Crossan and the resurrection of Jesus : rethinking presuppositions, methods and models

Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2015.When historical Jesus’ scholar, John Dominic Crossan, stated that Jesus’ resurrection appearances were apparitions and not physical appearances, was it possible to test this conclusion? To what degree are a scholar’s conclusions affected by his presuppositions? Crossan’s definition of history was that it ‘is the past reconstructed interactively by the present through argued evidence in public discourse’ (Crossan 1999:3). The outworking of this view was that the New Testament Gospels are regarded as megaparables, fictitious creations. His application of this view was, ‘Emmaus never happened. Emmaus always happens’ (Crossan 2012:5). A pattern emerged in which Crossan stated that he was using a method of postmodern interactivism (Crossan 1998a:42). But how is this discerned and articulated with as objective a methodology as possible? What do presuppositions of postmodern, reconstructive, interactivism do to Crossan’s conclusions regarding Jesus’ resurrection appearances? Here the parameters were restricted to literary and historical dimensions of Crossan’s speech acts. The problem investigated was to seek to identify Crossan’s presuppositions and methods in his study of the resurrection of Jesus to determine if they were valid or not when the Gospel evidence on the resurrection was considered. A presupposition-hypothesis method was used to test for verification or falsification, using a critical realist epistemology. A research gap indicated a need for a more objective model to isolate a researcher’s presuppositions of Jesus’ resurrection. The Beaver and Geurts framework (2011) was chosen that led to probability and not certainty about the content of presuppositions. Presuppositional ‘triggers’ were identified from Crossan’s resurrection data. The hypothesis tested was: J D Crossan's presuppositions and methods, in his study of the resurrection of Jesus, are not valid when the Gospel evidence on the resurrection is taken into consideration. Twenty-three presuppositions were discovered and these were developed into 18 hypotheses, three of which were tested: Hypothesis 9: The divine manifestation of Christianity for a postmodern world is deconstruction (his term is reconstruction) and it is not done once for all, but is reinterpreted for each generation’s issues. It was found that reconstruction mutilates the voice of the author by imposing an a priori metaphorical dogmatism on the text. Crossan’s postmodern, reconstructive, interactive hermeneutic was shipwrecked on the ‘rocks’ of contradiction, inconsistency and a self-defeating methodology. Hypothesis 10: The New Testament resurrection narratives are not historical documents. Crossan defined history as a postmodern reconstructionist and reached postmodern, reconstructive conclusions, thus using a question begging logical fallacy. He also did not apply this methodology consistently. Hypothesis 12: It does not matter what a person believes about whether Jesus’ tomb was empty or not; the importance is its meaning, which is independent of factuality. Crossan imposed his own understanding of the meaning of Jesus’ resurrection through his use of free play, relativistic, multivalent, postmodern, nonsupernatural stratagem on the text. Thus, Crossan’s idiosyncratic meanings replaced objective, hermeneutical testing of the text of Scripture. Therefore this dissertation’s hypothesis was verified.tm2015New Testament StudiesPhDUnrestricte

An Otago Storeman in Solomon Islands reaches from inland South Island of New Zealand across to the Solomon Islands during the 1880s. William Crossan's Otago experience as a versatile storeman with a solid work ethic helped him survive on the Melanesian frontier where he encountered conflicting clans, cannibalism, cheating traders, and co-operative entrepreneurial big men. His diary provides many glimpses into Makiran society as it encountered new ideas, new employment, and western technology. It is a welcome addition to the sparse record of these cryptic copra traders seeking fortunes on the cusp of indigenous tradition and incoming colonialism.Includes bibliographical references (pages 91-95).An Otago Storeman in Solomon Islands reaches from inland South Island of New Zealand across to the Solomon Islands during the 1880s. Virtual reality medical simulators offer the potential to provide a training environment for a novice doctor to practice skills without risk to patients. However, these simulators must be shown to provide learning before they are used in a medical training environment. This paper describes the first stage of an experiment to assess the effectiveness of the Glasgow Horse Ovary Palpation Simulator for training novice veterinary students. The performance on the simulator of a group of participants has been measured over multiple training sessions. The results show that over 4 training sessions, participants improved in their accuracy in diagnosis on the simulator while reducing the time required to make the diagnosis

Examining mental illness in young adult literature: a translation proposal of Toffee by Sarah Crossan

    No full text
reservedThe purpose of this dissertation is to present and analyse the translation from English into Italian of Toffee by Sarah Crossan. It is a Young Adult novel written in an unusual free verse style in which the author tackles hard-hitting themes, such as that of dementia, which are mixed with those of friendship and the research of personal identity. In fact, by using her pen, the author manages to capture what it really means, for a teenager, to feel lonely and lost, or to spend time with someone who is living with dementia. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first one provides a brief overview of Young Adult literature and its main characteristics, together with a focus on the presence of difficult themes in the literature intended for young readers. Moreover, it deals with the difficulties that its translation often involves. The second chapter consists of the introduction to the novel, paying particular attention to its features and leading themes, and it also provides the translation proposal of a selection of chapters dealing with dementia. Finally, the third chapter focuses on the problems encountered during the translation process and the strategies employed to solve them

Relationships with management, NPM, discretionary power and performance

This paper compares the link between workplace relationships with management and employee’s perceptions of discretionary power and performance in the public and private sector post NPM within three countries: two Anglo-American countries (Australia, United Kingdom (UK)) and in one classical Continental country (Italy). The study used survey data from 1945 employees and the analysis using SEM and ANOVAs found that whilst management impacted employee perceptions of discretionary power and performance in all three countries, there were significant differences in public and private sector employee’s engagement performance in all three countries, however, satisfaction with management differed only in Anglo-American countries. The findings suggest evidence of poor management practices across the public and private sector in each of the three countries, suggesting that the post NPM management practices waste scarce public resources by negatively impacting employee performance

O MODELO 4IS DE APRENDIZAGEM ORGANIZACIONAL: UMA ABORDAGEM EM INSTITUIÇÕES DE ENSINO SUPERIOR

    No full text
