    Atom chip for BEC interferometry

We have fabricated and tested an atom chip that operates as a matter wave interferometer. In this communication we describe the fabrication of the chip by ion-beam milling of gold evaporated onto a silicon substrate. We present data on the quality of the wires, on the current density that can be reached in the wires and on the smoothness of the magnetic traps that are formed. We demonstrate the operation of the interferometer, showing that we can coherently split and recombine a Bose–Einstein condensate with good phase stability

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Adult women's experiences post miscarriage : a literary review based on Katie Eriksson ́s nursing theory

    No full text
ABSTRACT Background Miscarriage, in a nursing context, is often referred to as a spontaneous abortion or involuntary abortion and affects a large percentage of pregnant women. The cause of miscarriage is difficult to diagnose, and the symptoms are individual. Commonly, the symptoms are vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain and a general feeling that “something is wrong”. It is due to these subjective symptoms that these women seek care via emergency departments. Aim The aim was to describe adult women's experiences of miscarriage based on Katie Eriksson ́s nursing theory on the three dimensions of suffering. Method This literature review was based on 18 research articles, with either qualitative or quantitative research methods. A database search was conducted through CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO. The included articles underwent quality assessment in accordance to Sophiahemmet University ́s matrix and analyzed with inspiration from Kristensson’s (2014) Integrated analysis. Results The result is presented in three categories based on Katie Eriksson ́s nursing theory; Care Suffering, Disease Suffering and, Life Suffering. The result showed that a miscarriage affects a woman within all three dimensions of suffering, where the traumatic event consists of feelings such as powerlessness, hopelessness and shame. Furthermore, it is shown that healthcare professionals have a responsibility in how the woman gets affected in the context of her suffering. Healthcare professionals with a true dedication and an empathic attitude is a contributing factor for a reduction of the suffering for these women. Conclusions The woman's experiences are affected within all three dimensions of suffering based on Katie Eriksson ́s nursing theory. To undergo miscarriage is a complex situation that leaves imprints on the life of these women, as the situation affects life in a physical, mental, social and existential way. This literature review also shows that healthcare professionals attitudes towards these women have a great impact on the future for these women. It is of great significance that healthcare professionals possess capacity on how their attitudes have an importance for the continued suffering for these women. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Haplotype structure and heterozygosity around the fragile foal syndrome variant in Swedish Warmblod horses

    No full text
Fragile foal syndrome (FFS) is a disease caused by a recessive lethal missense mutation in the PLOD1 gene located on ECA2. Despite its harmful effect, a relatively high frequency of FFS carriers was observed in Warmblood breeds spanning from 7.4% in a random sample of Swedish Warmblood breed to 17% in the Hanoverian and Danish Warmblood, indicating potential heterozygous advantage. Balancing selection can be further studied based on haplotype blocks and via detection of heterozygosity-rich region (ROHet) around the target of selection. In this study we evaluated the presence of haplotype blocks and ROHet on ECA2 in 380 Swedish Warmblood horses. We compared the results of ROHet with the rest of the genome. On average, 11.7 heterozygosity rich regions were identified per horse on ECA2, with no significant difference in numbers and length compared to what was found in other chromosomes. A unique haplotype block containing 28 markers was found in the FFS haplotype, while there were several haplotype blocks in the non-carrier haplotype. This unique haplotype block mostly spanned the region upstream of the PLOD1 gene and included the MFN2 gene. The presence of this extended haplotype, shared by multiple individuals and including both the FFS variant and the MFN2 gene, suggests that this region may be under selection. While we did not find a clear heterozygosity-rich region around the FFS variant, the extended haplotype may reflect either a signature of balancing selection or linkage disequilibrium with a positively selected variant in MFN2, PLOD1, or nearby loci
