An emerging “arms race” resourcing the public communication effort
In this chapter, we observe the roll out of public communication of research institutes in the light of the medialisation hypothesis, for which we specify the arms race model (ARPC, arms race for public communication). We do this by examining relationships between the allocation of resources to public communication and the level of competition between universities and between research institutes. Using data on resources allocated and indicators of competition, we examine whether the statistical findings are consistent with an arms race in public communication. We are comparing data from eight countries (Brazil, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, and Germany; from N=2,030 research institutes) across six areas of research (Natural Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Medicine and Health Sciences, Agriculture, Social Sciences, and Humanities). The results suggest that there is an arms race for public communication, in some fields and countries more so than in others. We end with some speculation about a dawning era of ‘Baroque’ science communication’ in the consequences of this competition

Public communication of research universities ‘arms race’ for visibility or science substance?
This book analyses communication of university research institutes, with a focus on science communication. Advancing the ‘decentralisation hypothesis’, it asserts that communication structures are increasingly built also at ‘subordinate unit’ levels of research universities. The book presents a cross-country systematic comparison of institutes’ communication activities showing ongoing transformations in their communication capabilities and practices. It considers a potential ‘arms race’ in activities, professionalisation, motivations, and evaluation. Based on empirical evidence from an international study carried out in various countries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, the book examines the possibilities for civic science communication in this new context
Stages for the More Sustainable Farm
Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones. Analyses of the results allow us to confirm the greatest relative sustainability of the planned farm, for the diverse traced scenarios.Decision taking, planning, sustainability, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management,
International audienceModeration of the interview with Marta Cuscunà, an Italian performer, director, puppeteer and author. In 2009, she was awarded the Premio Scenario per Ustica for E bello vivere liberi!, first show of a trilogy on female resistance, followed by La semplicità ingannata (2012) and Sorry, boys (2015). These three texts are published in Resistenze femminili (Udine: Forum, 2019). In 2018 she created Il canto della caduta. Earthbound (2021) is her last devised show, which brings in the themes of ecofeminism, taking cues from the theories of Donna Haraway and Bruno Latour. In 2021 she became associate artist at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. In 2023, she is guest of honor at the 11th Biennale internationale des arts de la marionette in Paris. She was awarded the prizes Rete Critica (2017), Premio della Critica – ANCT (2018) and Premio Hystrio - Altre Muse (2019).Animation de la discussion avec Marta Cuscunà, performeuse, metteuse en scène, marionnettiste et autrice italienne. In science we trust: The effects of information sources on COVID-19 risk perceptions
The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of sources of information on COVID-19 risk perceptions. Using data from a representative sample of the Portuguese population (N = 1,411) collected early in the pandemic, we find that while media sources were more frequently used, scientific sources played a more important role on perceived personal and societal-level risks; higher trust in scientific sources associated with increased risk perceptions (i.e., amplified perceived risk), trust in social media associated with dismissing personal threat (i.e., attenuated perceived risk). These findings suggest that people’s relations with science were determinant factors in risk perceptions, and dimensions that measure these deserve further investigation.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
The thesis proposes the creation of conceptual ideas for some properties of the Central University "Marta Abreu" of The Villages, being "The Student House", the two entrances, the central entrance and that of a section of the university known as "Los Camilitos". Apart from that, we shall elaborate conceptual ideas for a recreational structure to be implemented in the yard of "La Casa Estudiantil"; this element can be equally implemented in other sectors of the university. All the objectives will maintain their current functions, carrying out but only a few planimetric changes where necessary as far as the "La Casa Estudiantil" is concerned, as for the entrances, we shall remodel the bus stop and the surrounding areas with the purpose of improving the aesthetics the section of the university. The thesis will be made up of three main chapter. The first one is based on the elaboration of an entire theoretical-conceptual chapter dedicated to the study of documents and laws of national and international character that govern the design principles and establish the rules for the intervention of the objectives, besides the analysis of similar examples in Cuba and of foreigner nature. In the second chapter, we will study the context surrounding the objectives of this thesis, the norms and regulations to implement in the intervention of these objectives, the current state, arriving to the establishment of the desired guidelines, a balance of areas for the elaboration of the Architectural Program. The results of all this will be represented in a final chapter, which depicts the first preliminary ideas with volumetric and planimetric solutions as well as imagery.non-publishe
Science communication has, in recent years, acquired increasing importance in society, being increasingly seen as a way of bringing citizens closer to science, possibly through various means.
