Plasmonic response of Ag- and Au-infiltrated cross-linked lysozyme crystals

    No full text
Metal-infiltrated protein crystals form a novel class of bio-nanomaterials of great interest for applications in biomedicine, chemistry, and optoelectronics. As yet, very little is known about the internal structure of these materials and the interconnectivity of the metallic network. Here, the optical response of individual Au- and Ag-infiltrated cross-linked lysozyme crystals is investigated using angle- and polarization-dependent spectroscopy. The measurements unequivocally show that metallic inclusions formed inside the nanoporous solvent channels do not connect into continuous nanowires, but rather consist of ensembles of isolated spheroidal nanoclusters with aspect ratios as high as a value of four, and which exhibit a pronounced plasmonic response that is isotropic on a macroscopic length scale. Fluorescence measurement in the visible range show a strong contribution from the protein host, which is quenched by the Au inclusions, and a weaker contribution attributed to the molecule-like emission from small Au-cluster

Networked Wilderness Communicating in Early New England

    No full text
In The Networked Wilderness, Matt Cohen examines communications systems in early New England and finds that, surprisingly, struggles over information technology were as important as theology, guns, germs, or steel in shaping the early colonization of North America. Colonists in New England have generally been viewed as immersed in a Protestant culture of piety and alphabetic literacy. At the same time, many scholars have insisted that the culture of the indigenous peoples of the region was a predominantly oral culture. But what if, Cohen posits, we thought about media and technology beyond the terms of orality and literacy?Reconceptualizing aural and inscribed communication as a spectrum, The Networked Wilderness bridges the gap between the history of the book and Native American systems of communication. Cohen reveals that books, paths, recipes, totems, and animals and their sounds all took on new interactive powers as the English negotiated the well-developed informational trails of the Algonquian East Coast and reported their experiences back to Europe. Native and English encounters forced all parties to think of each other as audiences for any event that might become a kind of publication. Using sources ranging from Thomas Mortons Maypole festival to the architecture of todays Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, Cohen shows that the era before the printing press came to New England was one of extraordinary fertility for communications systems in America.Intro -- Contents -- Note on the Text -- Introduction -- 1. No full text
Artykuł przedstawia wybrane aspekty koncepcji modlitwy według współczesnego koptyjskiego mnicha Matta el-Maskine (1919–2006). Natura modlitwy i jej rola w kształtowaniu postawy chrześcijańskiej to pierwsza część artykułu. The article presents selected aspects of the concept of prayer according to the contemporary Coptic monk Matt el-Maskine (1919–2006). The nature of prayer and its role in shaping the Christian attitude is the first part of the article. The second part is devoted to the fruits of prayer. The last part is an indication that Matta el-Maskine connected the topic of prayer with ecumenical efforts and saw their interconnection. The deep understanding of prayer contained in Matt el-Maskine’s works and at the same time showing it in many social contexts makes us consider this author a contemporary master of Christian spirituality who perfectly combines experience with knowledge, the tradition of the East with the tradition of the West, as well as theology with everyday life

THE MARIOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE PERICOPE ON „THE TRUE RELATIVES OF JESUS” (MATT. 12,46-50)

    No full text
The author of the article in his scientific research presents an attempt at a Mariological interpretation of the pericope on the true relatives of Jesus (Matt. 12,46-50). He concludes that it is not St. Matthew’s intention to present Jesus as sending his relatives away without meeting them. The author points out that the Evangelist does not intend to take any stand on the position of Mary. He only emphasizes the exceptional standing of the disciples. The episode depicted in the narrative on the true relatives of Jesus (Matt. 12,46-50) has been clearly softened. In his article the author shows that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the Messiah and His disciples are presented in a more favorable light than in Mk 3,31-35. St. Matthew has preserved a certain mariological continuity in his evangelical account in which he presents an exceptionally beautiful and extraordinary image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the Messiah. The picture of Mary presented indirectly in the pericope on the true relatives of Jesus (Matt. 12,46-50) remains in editorial harmony with earlier accounts in the Gospel of the Childhood of Jesus (Matt. 1-2). This outline of the image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the Messiah confirms the fact that she was held in high esteem by the first Church of Jesus Christ, when she was still alive

Biblijny profil Maryi w relacji „o narodzeniu Jezusa" (Mt 1,18-25) - propozycja interpretacji

The author proposes an interpretation of the pericope of Matt 1,18-25 that emphasizes some Mariological aspects in the context of the first canonical Gospel. The author attests to the fact that the virgin birth of Mary is not given any special justification in Matt 1,18-25 nor is it an object of any special theological reflection because the pericope in question (Matt 1,18-25) is a self-contained narrative in which St. Matthew depicts the birth of Jesus as an exceptional event in the economy of salvation. And he does so for two reasons: because the virgin birth itself as well as the whole presented event (cf. Matt 1,22) is a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy of Is 7,14 (cf. Matt 1,22b-23) and because the fact that Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit becomes a logical ground for acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God. Nevertheless, the Evangelist also allows for the Mariological theme in a very special way.The author of the article reaches a number of crucial Mariological conclusions which are the guiding ideas of his research, i.e. that in Matt 1,18-25 Mary is portrayed even more expressively than in the pericope presenting the genealogy of Jesus (Matt 1,1-17 especially Matt 1,16). St. Matthew depicts Mary as a remarkable person, very significant in the fulfillment of God’s plan of saving humanity. Mary plays an invaluable role in the pericope of Matt 1,18-25. Since the times of the prophet Isaiah she was the chosen Virgin who would give birth to the Emmanuel. Thus, she can be described as a mediator of God’s actions in His plan of saving all humanity. But in Matt 1,18-25 St. Matthew does not mention any personal deeds of Mary. The author attests to the fact that Mary is the virgin and immaculate Mother of Jesus, the Messiah, the Christ, Son of David and Son of God. This leads to a conclusion that Mary is the Mother of the Emmanuel. And because her motherhood is the result of the Holy Spirit’s action (Matt 1,18.20) the Church owes to her the Master, the Son of God who stands by the Church “always, [even] unto the end of the world” (Matt 28,20).KeywordsThe author proposes an interpretation of the pericope of Matt 1,18-25 that emphasizes some Mariological aspects in the context of the first canonical Gospel. The use of 3D surface analysis techniques to investigate the wear of matt surface finish femoral stems in total hip replacement

    No full text
Total hip replacement is one of the most common surgical procedures carried out both in the UK and Worldwide. With an increasing number of younger patients undergoing the procedure, there is an emphasis on increasing the longevity of prostheses. The following reports on a number of component studies which, when combined give an insight into the mechanism of wear behind the loosening and failure of matt surface finish femoral stems. By examining stems which have been explanted from patients, a method of wear classification has been developed, and also 3D surface measurement techniques have been employed to quantify wear through parametric characterisation and also volume analysis. Initial findings suggested that the wear of matt finish femoral stems differs to that of smoother polished femoral stems. Studies also provide information regarding the nature of bone cement, its behaviour and the interaction between stem and cement following insertion of the stem. It was found that geometric change in bone cement occurred during polymerisation, and following curing. This geometric change presented itself in the form of differential shrinkage. This shrinkage of cement was observed initially through 3D surface topography analysis and later confirmed with geometric measurement techniques. The presence of voids between stem and cement give rise to the possibility of debris creation and transportation, adding to the evidence for a difference in wear mechanism between polished and matt surface finish femoral stems. Some progress was made towards replication of wear in vitro which has future possibilities for wear screening of materials and designs of future prostheses. The overall conclusion of the study suggests that the dominant wear mechanism which occurred between the stem and bone cement was abrasive in nature and this is likely to explain the accelerated wear of matt stems which has been reported by clinicians and researchers

The XMM-Newton long look of NGC 1365: uncovering of the obscured X-ray source

    No full text
We present an analysis of the extreme obscuration variability observed during an XMM–Newton 5-d continuous monitoring of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) in NGC 1365. The source was in a reflection-dominated state in the first ∼1.5 d, then a strong increase in the 7–10 keV emission was observed in ∼10 h, followed by a symmetric decrease. The spectral analysis of the different states clearly shows that this variation is due to an uncovering of the X-ray source. From this observation, we estimate a size of the X-ray source DS < 1013 cm, a distance of the obscuring clouds R∼ 1016 cm and a density n∼ 1011 cm−3. These values suggest that the X-ray absorption/reflection originates from the broad-line region clouds. This is also supported by the resolved width of the iron narrow Kα emission line, consistent with the width of the broad Hβ line

Protection Against Pursuit: A Conceptual and Empirical Comparison of Cyberstalking and Stalking Victimization Among a National Sample

    No full text
abstract: Cyberstalking is a relatively understudied area in criminology, with no consensus among scholars as to whether it represents a modified form of stalking or whether it is an entirely new and emerging criminal phenomenon. Using data from the 2006 Supplemental Victimization Survey (SVS) to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), this study compares stalking and cyberstalking victims across several dimensions, including situational features of their experiences and self-protective behaviors. Results indicate that there are significant differences between stalking and cyberstalking victims, including their number of self-protective behaviors adopted, duration of contact with their stalker, financial costs of victimization, and perceived fear at onset. Perceived fear over time, the occurrence of a physical attack, and sex of the victim were all associated with a higher number of self-protective behaviors for cyberstalking victims compared to stalking victims, net of the effect of the control variables. Implications for stalking theory, research, and criminal justice policy are discussed. This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published as Nobles, Matt R., Reyns, Bradford W., Fox, Kathleen A., & Fisher, Bonnie S. Oblicza ludzkiego ubóstwa w świetle Ewangelii Jezusa Chrystusa

    No full text
The article gives the description of human poverty in the light of the teaching of Jesus Christ. The basis for the analyses gave numerous biblical texts: Mk 1:15; cf. Matt 4:17; Luke 4:43, as well Luke 4:18-19, also Luke 6:20 and Matt 5:3 and in addition many others. The poor of the Gospels are the first recipients of the kingdom of God. According to the author the evangelical poor have many different faces and also poverty has many dimensions. The first of all it is the material lack and need. However in the light of Gospels there are many others categories of poor people, for example the people excluded for their social and religious position: widows and children, little ones, am ha'aretz. There are many others people: sick and suffering, sinners and outlawed, men with an unclean spirit. All these people were the recipients and beneficiaries of the kingdom of God

Duszpasterstwo chorych w Polsce. Między teorią i praktyką

    No full text
Jesus Christ treated the sick in a special way, healing their diseases and weaknesses (Matt 4: 23). The Church, faithful to the command of her Founder, continually engages in the ministry of the sick and suffering, regarding this ministry as an integral part of her mission. This type of ser-vice needs to become a priority especially in a prosperous and efficient society, in a culture char-acterized by idolatry of the body, dismissal of suffering and pain and by the myth of perennial youth (EiE 88). How is the ministry of the sick carried out in Poland? Does the pastoral work, on the one hand, take into account a normative dimension, contained in the Revelation and the Magisterium of the Church, as well as read the emerging signs of the times on the other? The author of the paper has compared selected guidelines of the Magisterium of the Church with the results of the sociolog-ical research he conducted in 1998 and replicated in 2014, in order to show how this ministry has changed over 16 years. The author also wishes to point out to the need for actions that would com-ply with the Magisterium and respond to the challenges of the modern day. Pragnie on też uwypuklić konieczność podjęcia takich działań, aby było ono wierne wskazaniom Magisterium i wyzwaniom współczesności
